Intel Supplier List: Fill & Download for Free

Not quite free but a huge discount.A long time ago I was a junior engineer, about 22, on a project building a radio communications system, and I was given the job of buying an Intel “in circuit emulator” or ICE. These were very expensive pieces of equipment for testing computer software, you take out the CPU and plug in the ICE. You can then run your programs at full speed and trace what happens, put in conditional break points (so you can say “if this happens then stop running”) and do lots of clever debugging not possible with embedded microcontrollers which don't have screens to monitor activity.In today's terms, that ICE would cost about US$30,000 and it needed an incredibly fast memory module costing from $7,000 to $15,000 depending on capacity.I got a quote from the Intel supplier, and raised the purchase order and chased it around the company to get the required 10 signatures on something so expensive (it took weeks). The order was very clear and listed the items: emulator base unit with power supply and cables, 80188 probe head, 512kB static ram module and ancillaries.The order was accepted, there was a good three week lead time. Then a phone call came in. The formal quote had been wrong, they forgot to include the RAM module, and they didn't want to fulfil the order because they wanted an additional $10,000.I said I would have to consult my manager and his manager. We needed the ICE desperately as our project was late, but it would be very embarrassing to have to go back to director level for more funding and admit the mistake. I told my manager we should hold the supplier accountable for their mistake.With trepidation, we set up a conference call, me and my manager, the sales guy and his sales director. They began by apologising for the mistake, and the delay, but surely we should have known the price was low. I explained I could only go by their quote, I knew nothing of any pricing structure. We asked if they could supply the goods anyway, but they said the losses were too high and despite it looking really bad on their record, they'd not fulfil the order on those terms. My manager was looking very worried that his late and over-budget project was being further derailed.I decided to take a chance, and suggested to Intel that the $10,000 was probably the list price, so maybe the true cost to them was only $6,000 at most? One suppressed a cough, and the other spluttered that they couldn't reveal their margins. My manager’s eyes widened with hope!Pushing my advantage, I suggested that we share the pain, that they sell the memory module to us below cost price, which would save face and reduce their losses, so I proposed $3,000. Again, suppressed coughing and stuttering, and they put us on hold to discuss it. After what seemed an age, they came off mute and agreed.My manager was leaping with joy. My negotiation was probably worth two months of his gross pay!Still, we had to go through the pain another PO, but the discounted price had become the stuff of legend and getting signatures was easier!thanks to Al Klein for the suggested edits. I must admit to being torn between quoting prices in the original UK pounds, or US dollars, but I went with the latter because I think more people worldwide understand the latter.
