PDF Editor FAQ

Are Jehovah's Witnesses dooming their young member's financial future to one of need by predicting the world as we know it will very soon be destroyed, therefore there exists little need for financial planning?

I live in Los Angeles which is among the most expensive places to live in the United States. Recently I did a calculation of how much the average person would need to make to live in LA. Starting with rent I found that the average price of an apartment in LA was $2,371. Water is priced at $0.004/Ga. Since the showers waste the most water I decided to use two ten minute showers per day as my baseline. I used a 2.1 Ga/min shower head for my calculations. Electricity is $0.183/kwh and the average household uses 500 kwh/month. The average gas bill is $35 a month. Food is a little more complicated by used Choose My Plate to create a standard, balanced, nutritious food ration for a day: two apples($0.60 each), 3 cups of spinach($0.59/ cup), 4 oz of rice($0.71/lb), 3 cups of milk($2.85/Ga), and 2 oz of black beans($1.47/lb). I used the most common car in LA, a 2010 Honda Accord, with an mpg of 22 at an average price of gas at the time of $3.65/Ga. Being under 25 my car insurance payment are on the High end so I used my parents payment of 190/month. Taken all together, I won’t bore you with the math, I found that a person working five days a week for eight hours a day should be making $17.00/hour to live in LA. A lot of these factors could change the $17.00 to a different number. Living in a cheaper or more expansive apartment, using utilities more of less efficiently, different dietary choices, using or more expansive car or taking the bus could all impact what a person can live on but I believe the $17.00 is a good baseline for a reasonably comfortable existence in LA.With the above in mind we can now consider the advice we as Jehovah’s Witnesses receive in regard to choosing a career. College is not condemned but caution is recommended but this question is about the financial impact of such advice so that is what I will focus on. It is no secret that those who choose to go to college often rack up a lot of debt in order to pay for that education. But in many parents and children mind’s that debt is worth it and in the long run meaningless because the job they get afterward will be able to pay off any debts incurred. The reality is that a college degree is no guarantee of a high paying job, it is extremely rare for a person to get a job that makes use of their degree, and in recent times can even be an obstacle to getting a low paying job as employers are reluctant to higher someone who is likely to leave them. Regardless of what Job a person gets those debts need to be repaid but the ability to repay them is not guaranteed. As well, even secular counselors acknowledge that a college education is really only needed for highly technical and specialized careers like engineering, medicine, and law. For most other jobs an employer will accept a community college degree, experience, or pay for any schooling needed by the employee. So let us now look into the financial effect of pursuing careers recommended by Jehovah’s Witnesses. The most recommended course is for people to learn a trade. Trades are often recommended even for college and university students as something to fall back on should they drop out or not find the job they were looking for. Why? Because unlike college degrees, trade usually guarantee work and therefore pay. You can work independently through referrals or find a job working for a contractor or a permanent position at a company. As well, a tradesman can usually work anywhere. An electrician can work anywhere there are electrical grids, a plumber can work anywhere there is running water, a carpenter can work anywhere homes are built or furniture is made. Trades also do not require long and expensive schooling. Many tradesman offer apprenticeship programs where a person can learn on the job and get paid while doing so, as opposed to the unpaid internship a lot of college students take. Several vocational school also provide practical training and can guarantee a job upon graduation with a partnered company. Last, of course, trades pay very well. A friend of mine is part of program that is training him to be an electrician. It includes classroom instruction and field work that he gets paid for. Periodically he gets a review with a possible raise of $1.90. At the end of the program he could be making $45.00/hr, 264% more than the $17.00 baseline. In other words at the rate of $45/hr if he decided to live like he was making $17.00/hr he would only have to work 15 hours a week. What is more is that Witness often could be making more money if not for their personal desire to live a simpler life. It is very common for Witnesses to be offered promotions by their employers but turn them down. The reason is because in line with what we are taught we are honest, hard working, and respectful. We also learn valuable skills because of being Witnesses. Literacy is invaluable. Indeed, it would be extremely difficult to be a Witness and not be able to read as reading the bible, our literature, notes and ministry records, and other things are integral to our existence as Witnesses. Because of that we offer literacy training for those who need it and basic mathematics courses as well. But above the ability to read a person needs to be able to read with understanding and the ability to impart that understanding to others. During a study it is not enough for a person to be able to read the page, they need to understand what is being said, why it is being said, why it true, and then they need to be able to explain the information contained in their own word in a way that other will also be able to understand. We also receive training on public and interpersonal speaking because it is an integral part of our ministry. The result is that the majority of Witnesses are good speaker, if not necessarily eloquent, and able to understand the spoken word and clearly express their own point of view in a tactful manner. The result of all this is that Witnesses are often considered good employees and favored candidates for promotions. In the end I am reminded of a saying that I have very useful, “There are two way to get rich, you can make more or require less.” There in lies the key. By living a simple life Witnesses can often live more comfortably than their higher earning peers. Indeed, it does not matter if you make $17/hr or $100/hr if you spend every thing you make, you are still living paycheck to paycheck and if you loose your job, get injured and can’t work, suffer a natural disaster the $100/hr earner will be in the same situation as the $17/hr earner. Then there is the spiritual side to the above saying, by becoming content with less a person’s life becomes immeasurably more enjoyable and the opposite is likewise true. If you are never satisfied with what you have than you will never be happy, everything no matter how golden, figuratively or literally, will be deficient to you. Ultimately, if a Witness has taken the instruction they receive to heart they will have a different mind set and different priorities than the world around them. Our goal is not to make a great name for ourselves, our goal is not to acquire vast amounts of wealth, our goal is not to live a ‘comfortable’ life in the here and now. Our goal is to do our best in serving Jehovah regardless of our economic standing.

How do I prepare for the GATE in 3–6 months? What are the recommended study strategies ? [ EC, CS, EE, ME, AE, Civil, CHE, Phy, Math]

Since you have limited time, you have to make some strategies. Here you may apply the rule of vital few. That means you will focus on only essential things, and You will make sure that your preparation is adequate.First, look at the distribution of marks. In the GATE question paper,Sixty-five questions are carrying 100 marks.Fifteen marks are for mathematicsFifteen marks are for general aptitude (GA)Seventy marks are for the subject of the paper e.g., mechanical, electronics, and so on.Strategy for MathematicsMathematics forms the foundation for engineering. I will recommend you to start your preparation with mathematics. It will also help you to solve some of the other problems which belong to general aptitude and core subject. You will select important topics or chapters from this subject. How will you do that? Look at earlier questions papers. Made Easy publishes earlier year question papers with answers categorized into different chapters. They also specify for how many marks each chapter was allocated for several years. Since weightage is not equal, you will focus on essential things. Due to limited time, you will focus on your strengths—the topics which you understand better and have high weightage. You will not spend time on something that you do not understand. You will not spend more than 15 days on mathematics. Learn by doing. Solve as many problems as you can. Prepare chapter, solve unsolved questions. Look at GATE questions on a similar topic. Clear concepts, solve problems and repeat.Strategy for GALet's look at the syllabus.Verbal Ability: English grammar, sentence completion, verbal analogies, word groups, instructions, erratically reasoning, and verbal deduction.Numerical Ability: Numerical computation, numerical estimation, numerical reasoning, and data interpretation.Looking at the syllabus, what do you think? Do you expect this to learn within ten days? The answer is NO.Preparation for GA is not required. These skills in English and numerical computation develop over some time. These are all common sense questions. What you can do is go quickly through earlier year questions of GA. See can you attempt them without preparation. These are easy questions. If you do not know the answer, use an elimination based approach i.e., eliminate each wrong answer, then what remains is the right answer. You will not spend more than 1 or 2 days on Preparing GA section.Preparation for Core SubjectHere again, you find out the essential subjects. Focus your preparation on those topics. Out of 90 days around 55 days, you will devote to preparing core subjects. The strategy will be the same as explained in preparation for Mathematics.General TipsDetermination:Aim for All India Rank 1. Dream big.Plan:A plan without work and a work without a plan, there is a failure. It would be best if you plan your studies. The plan could be monthly, weekly, and daily. Understand how much syllabus you need to cover and how much time you have. Allocate the time properly. The plan should not be rigid, and it must evolve as you go on preparing.Execution:Go step by step, conquer every concept, every para, every chapter, and every subject. It would be best if you worked hard on your plan. GATE is easy, and if you work hard, you will get a good rank.Practice:There is a saying, "Practice makes man perfect and women too :)." So you must spend enough time in mastering concepts. Remember that the amount of time you spent on preparation will be directly proportional to your success in GATE.Test Series: You must solve previous year question papers. Over the years, the nature of questions remains the same. Solve chapter-wise questions. Solving tests will help you in understanding your strengths and weaknesses. Join test series of some reputed coaching institutes. Devote the last ten days only for answering questions papers.Concept Clarity:You may recite the formulas, but anything you try to remember without understanding, will not be retained for long. So first, you must emphasize on clearing the concepts and then try to remember. Make a list of formulas for different chapters.Technical Discussion with Friends:Help your friends in solving the problems. If you do not understand, ask for help.Books: Use appropriate booksGood Luck!

What would happen if you tell a police officer "Just give me the ticket already, I have places to go!" when they pull you over?

Back in the 70’s 80’s I worked a company that made racing suspensions. One year several boxes of very important items were left out of the trucks we sent to a little race called the Indy 500. Our company was located outside of Atl. Ga. I had just finished my 10 hr work day when the owner approached and informed me of that.( We left stuff out, not we we're in ATL.) Said he would make it worth my while to drive up and drop off the items and leave the truck. I ask “So I guess I get to see the race anyway!” I was pissed I wasn't chosen to go to that race. He said, “No, you still have the race in “East Bumble” to attend. I asked how I have to be in E B tomorrow night. So we loaded up my race bike in the back of the truck and I started my journey. I made it to the track at around 12am unloaded my bike and wound it up. I was pulled over in Tennessee doing 145mph, I already had my bike stopped and license out when the cop pulled up. He got sarcastic, and asked “you know the speed limit is the same as in Ga.?” I just said “Look I put in a 10hr day at work before they asked me to drive to Indianapolis to drop off a truck and I have to make it back by morning to load up and leave for the race in Ea. Bumble, don't have time for this! I was road wired then I just blurted out “GIVE ME A TICKET, LET ME GO OR TAKE ME TO JAIL! AT THIS POINT I WOULDN'T MINE JAIL SO I CAN SLEEP!” He just looked at me, ran my license told me to drive safe and good luck. I didn't even get the ticket. I did make it back to work on time and got loaded up and ready to leave, but buy this point I was so exhausted when the owner came up to me to give some last minute instructions, I mumbled something incoherent and he let me off the hook and made a different tech do that trip.
