PDF Editor FAQ

Are Coast Guard warrant officers commissioned?

Yes. In the United States military all warrant officer ranks W2-W5 are considered commissioned officers. To my knowledge the USArmy uses the CWO-1 rank, and I believe it’s the only service that does. The US Air Force no longer has Warrant Officers.

Why does the Coast Guard want me to enlist before going to OCS?

Why does the Coast Guard want me to enlist before going to OCS?Probably they want you to have some experience with the CG missions and culture. The Navy made a lot of “90 day wonders” during WW2, but that was an emergency situation, and is not something you would want to do in peacetime. Did they tell you how many years they wanted you to have as enlisted before you would be eligible for OCS? If you want to do it quickly, the Academy is probably your best bet.Just as an aside, going to OCS as a W2 beats the heck out of E7.

To whom should I write requesting a warrant officer commission?

That isn’t quite how it worksThe first thing you do is talk to a recruiter in one of the 4 services that have Warrant Officers (the AF doesn’t)The Army is the only service that has a program that offers W1.The other services commission Chief Warrant Officers as W2For the other services the Marines, the Navy and the Coast Guard you enlist in the service of your choice. You then stay in long enough to meet all the qualifications for promotion to E7. Once you are either promoted to E7 or at least appear on the selection list above the cut off you can apply for Warrant. Once you apply for Warrant, if you meet all the other requirements you will go before a selection board and if selected receive a commission as a W2
