How do I not feel lonely all the time? I have social anxiety and depression and find that I isolate myself a lot.

This is a tricky one and the answer varies from age group to age group. You have already stated that you are a depressive, which usually includes anxiety neurosis as well. The fact that there is social anxiety as well, complicates the matter as it depends on the type you have.Since you have a record of depression, when was the last time your condition, and more to the point medications reviewed?If it has not been in the last two years, and this issue of loneliness is still cropping up then it may need a change in medication for your depression, indeed a weaning off the medication. I have a friend who has OCD and she lives in one of these community type housing operations. She has both a front and back door as she lives on the ground so not only is there a common room, she has access to the garden (as they all do) but near immediately.She has her own bathroom and small living area as well as a cooking area as well. (She will kill me for saying this) but she has dwarfism so all the floors have had to be raised so she can reach the surfaces to cook and prepare food. She even has children’s furniture and that includes bed -:)She is actually very outgoing and loving although her OCD can make her swing from being very serious, to having childish out bursts, which can make her fun to be with, but you have to be prepared for anything -:) Despite her occasional loneliness she can break out of it by going to bingo and other social events which are not claustrophobic, and she always makes sure that she has a “bolt-hole” for company, even if that is on her mobile etc.Joining clubs and places like bingo halls or general interest where you can interface with others such as media like this. If you have music on in the background and you are playing on a site like this, face book etc. you have a social network- hence media. You don’t have to worry about social anxiety as you are not interfacing in a real time environment.Do you have people that you are still in contact with at school or from other areas you used to frequent and can pick you up. If you have social anxiety you will not want a lot of people around you so just a couple of people will be ideal. Like some people with Asperger’s or ADHD syndromes it may well be you don’t like people in your immediate “Personal Space”; but you can work around that, make sure if you strike up a conversation with some one (or vice versa) that your back is not against or near a wall as that can make you claustrophobic, and the fear that you can be entrapped. Again the latter is part of social anxiety.Do you have any close relations that you can visit/ they visit you?How are you on public transport; can you find your away around easily and get out. You don’t have to be close to people and if you can go out at a time when the transport is bank the feeling of being trapped is going to fall away.That said if like me, you have a tendency to get lost (I am epileptic with co-ordination [sense of direction] issues and if I get lost panic /get anxious) . If that is the case, find someone to go out for a walk for say 30 minuets to get you out of the house; again this does not have to be in a crowded area. More to the point if you do get disorientated you know that they can get you home. I think if you do get lost easily, then carrying a mobile phone (and that can be pay as you go) would be an advantage since if you know a person in that area, you can phone them; and providing you know where you are in terms of the street names, then they can come and find you.Indeed I have had to do this when I have had a total memory loss (due to my epilepsy) and got badly lost in a town, forgot where I parked my car and couldn’t remember how to get back to the house I was staying. I quite literally phoned my friend who lived nearby, gave him the names of the two roads I was in and he came to find me.Yes it frightened me, but at the end the fact he found me and took me home and settled me down was a great advantage. He laughs about the fact I get lost easily, but as his sister has OCD syndrome equally understands the situation.As for getting lonely at home, do you read a lot?Go to the library and pull a few books and have a read, again you can have the radio on in the background so you have some sort of aural interaction (in the UK we have plenty of radio stations which have telephone call ins, discussions and local events, or you can have other National Stations which have a variety of programmes. The great thing about radio you can do other things at the same time.My friend with OCD likes to do crafts such as “sequin art” where you make pictures with sequins within a template. I have to admit far to frustrating and time consuming for me; but for her it works.Finally I would suggest that you have a chat with your Doctor as they may have some ideas for you, but just be careful that the first thing he reaches for is a prescription pad !
