How do you, as an empath, guard yourself against feeling overwhelmed by other people’s emotions?
I think there are three steps to this, and they may be some sort of evidence of the evolution of the empath. And permission, is a part of taking that control. You can choose to allow other peoples emotions to interact with yours, and you can choose to sever the connection that is made. It will make you a little guarded perhaps but it is one way.And then there is healing, you can learn to use yourself as a conduit to heal others, with or without their knowing. Now there are a lot of people who may claim this is a violation of consent, but to me me the consent to heal refused by the human mind makes little difference if the persons higher self allows it. If the higher self disallows it then it can’t happen regardless.So, in healing, there are many ways to do this and I have my own preferences of which healing modality to use. In most cases that is the hawiaan prayer, Ho’oponopono. But if you have more faith and practise in reiki or crystals or eft etc or something else then you can use that.When you are feeling the negative emotion of someone else, you can channel your healing gifts towards the feeling that creates within you, and if you are allowing the connection to begin with, what ever you heal within you will automatically heal those around you.So, for my advice if you are to struggling, first look to making shields, then from that safe space look for the power inside yourself to control it. And finally from a place of control learn to heal when it is necessary.
