Not too long ago, we had this guy come speak at our district:Some of my teacher friends are probably rolling their eyes, but he actually had a pretty decent message.Every lesson needs… (wait for it)… A HOOK.This was not really groundbreaking information, but he breaks down different types of hooks. Here’s an infographic sketch someone made:Several of them gave me new ideas, but the one that stuck out to me is one I’d already used without thinking of it.The TABOO hook.It turns out that doing or saying naughty things in the classroom is a great way of getting students attention and pushing material into longer term storage. You just have to be careful not to violate community standards too badly.An obvious example is when we do triangle congruence postulates. There are 5 that work and 2 that seem like they’d work but they don’t.The ones that work are:SSS (side-side-side triangle congruence postulate)SAS (side-angle-side)ASAAASHL (hypotenuse leg)The ones that don’t are:SSAAAAYou see. I’ve already lost you, because you don’t care about triangle congruence, but what if I make one little change:SSA becomes ASSAnd I write it really big on the board. I have everyone’s attention.Oh, and you know why booty congruence doesn’t work? (Yes, I call it booty congruence.) Because it makes two different triangles. That’s right, booty makes number two. My students will never ever forget that ASS is not a valid triangle congruence postulate. Not until the end of time.Taboo hooks work.Another example is in my Economics class, we always talk about weed.I ask them a simple question: Will the legalization of weed in various states move the price up or down?This turns out to be a not-obvious question, since it simultaneously increases supply and demand, but it’s a taboo subject and gets the kids talking. (While not actually encouraging drug use.) It shows them that supply and demand have real world implications.My only cautions would be, just like any hook, don’t use it every day. And think long and hard about whether or not your administrators would let this fly if they heard about it. Not if they’d give you permission to do it (many times they wouldn’t if you ask them), but if they’d forgive you later if they heard about it. And don’t say anything that’s going to make your students uncomfortable. For, as much as this term has been maligned, you want your class to be a safe place to learn.

You can ABSOLUTELY use ASA to prove triangle congruence. I have been teaching Geometry for over 10 years and there are five ways to prove triangle congruence. They are SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, and HL [Hypotenuse Leg Theorem] (I believe this to be what you called RHS).I am not sure why you assumed that it could not be used to prove congruence. The name itself implies that the side being used is included between the 2 Sides from each triangle Angle “Side between them" Angle.It would be impossible to use AAS if the side was between the 2 angles. The order would not be correct. Going clockwise or counterclockwise around the triangle, the parts you are using for congruence must be adjacent to one another.I hope that clears it up for you!

SSS (side, side, side)-If three sides of one triangle are equal to three sides of another triangle, the triangles are congruent.2. HL (hypotenuse, leg)This one applies only to right angle trianglesorHL stands for "Hypotenuse, Leg" (the longest side of a right-angled triangle is called the "hypotenuse", the other two sides are called "legs")It means we have two right-angled triangles withthe same length of hypotenuse andthe same length for one of the other two legs.It doesn't matter which leg since the triangles could be rotated.If the hypotenuse and one leg of one right-angled triangle are equal to the corresponding hypotenuse and leg of another right-angled triangle, the two triangles are congruent.
