The thing is, Jon doesn’t stay at the Nights Watch…per say. According to a recent interview, Jon will spend the rest of his days ranging the far far north and defending the free folk.Bran’s decision to send Jon to the wall is meant to serve as the first and only example we get of how great a ruler he will be with the power he has. Bran was unable to free Jon because it would start a war, and killing Jon would cause the same. Tyrion was very clear about this.So instead Bran sentences Jon to the Nights Watch….because he knows it’s the only way he can set Jon free. When we see Jon at Castle black we see him walk the grounds, taking it all in…He honesty doesn’t look like he belongs. Its not home to him…We then see him go North with Tormund, Ghost, and the free folk. The only member of the Nights Watch going with them…why? Because he is essentially going with them, to escort them and the protect them. He is still a member of the Watch, but just like his Uncle before him is a ranger now and will spend months, if not years beyond the wall at a time. So he is by all definitions free, and where he belongs.Jon rides out with them…then you hear the gate start to close and he looks back…He then looks around at the people…and then forward. And even without expression, it’s clear he’s happy and he’s home.Jon fell in love with the free folk and spent seasons defending them and trying to protect them. it’s only right that his ending is with them.And for all we know, Jon Snow is King in the North. Despite still being a member of the watch, he is free and with the free folk in the far north, defending and protecting them.

When I first heard the term “free-range parenting” I thought it was absolutely ridiculous. My kids are not chickens or turkeys, to be fed organic grain and given “free range” to wander over green fields before we slaughter them and cook them for dinner!But as my kids started to get older, I realized that our society has changed a lot since I was a kid. “Helicopter-parenting” is the new normal. Parents hover over their kids on the playground, never let them out of their line of sight, and try to take care of every tiny little thing that a child needs - even if the child is perfectly capable of handling something themselves.It has gotten so bad that child protective services has removed kids from their homes because their parents are doing things as basic as letting the kids walk around their neighborhood alone.[1]This is not okay.Kids need independence. Kids need to be able to learn, to explore, and even to make mistakes. Parents need to teach their kids how to manage risk, and how to be independent people. A parent’s job is balancing risks with potential benefits. And yes, sometimes they will get it wrong.Our society (at least in the United States) is considerably safer than it was when I was a kid.[2] So why are parents getting more controlling, even as the true dangers to kids are abating?Helicopter parenting is resulting in a generation of kids who do not know how to take care of even their own basic needs. A former Dean of Stanford University lamented this in a recent article, saying that students look brilliant on paper, but are incapable of taking care of themselves.[3]I am now a member of the “free-range parenting” club. I still hate the term, but I recognize the need. I currently work for Circle K, and we don't charge police officers for their coffee or fountain drinks, seeing as they regularly patrol my parking lot overnight, keeping me and my coworkers safer.However, we also extend the same policy for members of the military (at least those in uniform), as well as firefighters and paramedics. We believe that anyone who risks their lives for our safety deserve a few freebies here and there.
