It compels me to do some serious research to answer it as accurately as possible.Truth be told, I don’t know much about aviation fuel, octane rating and the impact of various grades of octane on aircraft engine performance. Being inquisitive about all technical matters and not wishing to spew out nonsense, I decide to enlighten myself on this esoteric subject in addition to seeking the information for this question.I am quite satisfied to be able to find authoritative references on this topic.Basic Technical Information(If you are already familiar with how aero-engine work, skip this part)WW2 witnessed unprecedented advances in aviation due to military demands for high-performance powerful aircraft of all types - esp bombers and fighters. Of the several essential concerns with regards to aircraft performance, speed was one of the most important. All major air forces in the world recognized the tactical advantage of high speed in aerial warfare; and speed was in determined by the performance of aero engines.With the exception of jet and rocket engines, most aero engines in WW2 were piston engines that powered propeller-driven aircraft. These piston engines used gasoline as aviation fuel (techspeak: avgas).Behold this marvel of high-precision engineering - a famous Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that proved to be one of the war-winning technology in WW2.One important property of avgas that had a direct impact on gasoline engine performance was Octane rating. The octane number represents the compressibility of avgas - the amount of compression gasoline can resist inside a piston chamber before spontaneous ignition. Note the term spontaneous ignition. Gasoline aircraft engines work by igniting a mixture of air + gasoline in the combustion chamber.Ideally, engine designers in WW2 sought to create engines wherein the pistons went would move as as high as possible in the chamber before the air-gasoline mixture was ignited by the spark plug. The reason was that it would exert more force which translated into more power which translated into greater speed. (I think this has to do with the fact that the piston would have more distance to cover for a given time span -> greater acceleration -> more force. But I may be wrong so correct me if that is the case). (see Here's What 'Compression Ratio' Actually Means And Why It Matters)There was a catch however. As the piston moved up, it compressed the air-gasoline mixture which increased pressure. Physics tells us that the higher the pressure in a given volume, the higher the temperature. If the temperature is high enough, the air+gasoline can be ignited spontaneously before being ignited by the spark plug. That is undesirable because the spontaneous combustion + primary combustion create shock waves that cause engine knocking that can damage an engine to various extent. Watch this instructive video on engine knocking.What that means is that a high power engine requires high-octane fuel to deliver maximum performance. This in turn necessitates increasing the octane rating of avgas. There are several ways of doing this. One inexpensive method is to add additives such as Tetraethyl Lead which increase the compressions-resisting property of avgas. (Fact Sheet - Leaded Aviation Fuel and the Environment)Avgas in WW2Before WW2, most avgas had low rating (below 80). Fortunately, that did not pose serious problems for aviation because most aero-engines (save the engines developed for race aircraft) during that period had relatively low performance. However, the specter of war that emerged from German rearmament and the necessity of air power stimulated the development of high-performance arero engines and high-octane avgas.The Allied nations and Nazi Germany employed different methods to produce aviation fuel. The US employed the Houdry process and alkylation process to produce large quantity of high-octane avgas. The alkylation method was noted to be very efficient for producing high-octane aviation fuel from petroleum which was aplenty in the US. The knowhow and patent related to alkylation were exclusively held by the Shell Oil Company.By virtue of having an enormous reservoir of petroleum on its oil, the US was the principal supplier of fuels for all types of vehicles and aircraft, esp high-octane avgas. The Soviets received a lot high-octane avgas from the US: (A HIGH-OCTANE WEAPON FOR VICTORY). The British also received large quantity of American-produced 100-octane avgas which they improved further to create the super-fuel BAM 100 for Spitfire fighters. The fuel increased the speed of British fighters at all levels which gave them a distinctive edge over the German Me-109 fighters powered by 87-octane fuel. The Germans later discovered the BAM 100 fuel from downed British fighters and realized that their Daimler-Benz engines could not use that fuel due to the lack of super-chargers. Germany did not have abundant petroleum as the US did but it had a lot of coal. German chemists invented the Fischer–Tropsch process to produce liquid fuel from coal, including avgas. As the war progressed, the Germans sought to create avgas of higher octane number to power new aero-engines to compete with the RAF and USAAF.Now this was when the matter got interesting. According to TECHNICAL REPORT NO. 145-45 MANUFACTURE OF AVIATION GASOLINE IN GERMANY:The many new processes applied in America for manufacturing high quality gasolines were well understood by the Germans. They obtained information through Allied technical publications, through analysis of gasoline from captured planes, and otherwise.At the same time, German research in great force was supplying new processes, many the same as those being developed by the Allies to their own operations.Toward the end of the war the quality of fuel being used by the German fighter planes was quite similar to that being used by the Allies.So therein lies the answer to this question. The premise of this question: How were the WW2 allies able to produce so much higher octane-rated fuel than the Germans is wrong. The quality of German aviation fuel was on par with Allies’ aviation fuel. German chemical engineering expertise was every bit of a match for the Allies’.What was true however was that the Germans did not have an abundance of high-octane avgas during the war, and esp in the final years of the war. The relentless round-the-clock strategic bombing campaign conducted by the RAF and USAAF had an extremely devastating effect on German war-making capacity. German synthetic fuel plants were frequently attacked. Allied bombs destroyed vast amount of fuel, disrupted production which reduced output further. The effect on the German war-machine was significant. The increasing scarcity of fuel coupled with the need to replace veteran pilots killed in combat against the Allies resulted in the reduction of training duration for German pilots. German factories continued to produce large number of aircraft. But the lack of fuel forced most of these aircraft to languish on the grounds. Also, the decline in the quality of German pilots led to an alarming increase in the attrition of German aircraft through pilot errors in training and operation. That was one of the many insidious effects of the Allied strategic bombing campaigns that many critics of the Allied strategic bombing campaign have overlooked.
