I can only answer from my perspective of a psychodynamic psychotherapist trained one the UK. On principle, it is never un-ethical to discuss matters, including a client’s case, with another officially trained professional. Even if that professional happens to be one’s spouse. It is simply something that majority of the spouses who both happen to be psychotherapists would mostly avoid.A trained psychotherapist can and will talk about their client cases with their colleagues. Not with the ‘civilians’, and never in places where the confidentiality of the clients can be compromised. It is imperative to understand that not talking about the client cases with the colleagues leads to a very poor level of practice.In this light, many good psychotherapists talk about their client cases with their colleagues at every and any opportunity they can take. With the view, of course, that it is extremely important to have an internal boundary between work time and personal time. Still, psychotherapists would talk about their client cases in their research group meetings, in their personal supervisions, in their group supervisions, in their peer supervisions, during the conferences and seminars. In fact, psychotherapists’ level of their continuous professional development (CPD) is evaluated by their governing bodies based on the necessary number of hours spent presenting and discussing their work to, and with the colleagues.If a psychotherapist’s spouse happens to be a fellow trained psychotherapist it means that they both had undergone subsequent character checks, aware of the strict confidentiality of the clinical material entrusted to them by each other or by other colleagues, and needless to say they are both ‘cultured’ to talk about their work in a clinical manner - not in a manner of gossip.In fact, if anybody overheard one of the passionate clinical case discussions between two psychodynamic or psychoanalytic psychotherapists, they would find it decidedly boring and not for the life of them able to make out any identifiable details… Things would sound something like “yes, but do you think I ought to engage the structures of the self, or is it more containing to keep things at the ego level at this point?” The reply might come on the form of “you cannot yet be sure if you are dealing with the actual structures of the self or with the split off parts of the introjects…” Hopefully, you get the idea.So, would two trained psychotherapists who happen to be spouses talk in this way? Yes, absolutely - if they wish. They will likely be too protective of their couple space, as well as of their personal space within the partnership, to introduce work into it at a peer-support, or a supervision level. But if both of them are passionate about their profession, they will inevitably ‘talk shop’. As two trained colleagues, they are entitled to it, provided that the talks kept strictly to a clinical level.Spouses who are both trained psychotherapists can also act as each other’s officially registered professional executives, ie somebodies who, in case an acting psychotherapist becomes indisposed, would step in and handle the communications with the clients, as well as the arrangements for the clients to be temporarily seen by another psychotherapist when necessary.Under such circumstances, it is extremely beneficial to be familiar with each other’s cases, because it would guarantee an intervention, should it became necessary, in a way which is attuned to each person’s level of vulnerability, allowing the professional executor to be aware of the degree of urgency with which any particular case should be approached. In some situations, the difference can literally be that between life and death. Still, if a psychotherapist’s professional executor is their spouse, both of them will make every effort to uphold a clean boundary between their designated time and space which they allocate to the professional matters - and their private domain.Taking the property of the professional world into the private domain might not be technically illegal, but it is morally icky, even if one’s official status affords it.

THERE IS NO NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE IN THE UNITED STATES! We are a constitutional republic formed as a union of states and it is the states, not the people, that elect the President. Take your damned democracy and choke to death on it!
