Slytherin. All the time IMAO, contrary to popular belief, if you ask me. We are the elite.No offense to Gryffindors (I adore them), but Slytherin is better, even if by a margin. And they’re way underrated despite the noble practices they have inculcated and mastered.Just think. What do you think is needed to succeed in life? To uphold and fulfil your dreams? If your answer is ambition, then you very well be grasping the gist of it all. Here are some undeniable reasons why Slytherin can be considered best of all. It is worth arguing to defend Slytherin House.Oh, and there’s also leadership, self-explanatory. None of the Death Eaters except Regulus (and Peter?) revolted against Voldemort. That means he was a satisfactory leader. Not that other House alumni can’t be good at that too. Harry Potter certainly was, during DA sessions. But fact is, Marietta Edgecombe willingly betrays them to Dolores Umbridge, although Peter Pettigrew (influenced by encounter in the Shrieking Shack and stirred by Sirius and Remus) and Regulus Black (grieved by the injustice meted out to Kreacher) had their own noble reasons, along with Narcissa Malfoy and Severus Snape. Lucius Malfoy was one person though, to do that, but that was because he was spinelessly cowardly, easily crippling his honour by his mistimed deeds which landed him in Azkaban and in Voldemort’s suspicious books.Determination and Ambition:Because we all know determination is the key to success in life. Plus, Slytherin has produced some of the greatest wizards of all the time. Merlin & Voldemort are the most exemplary of them. Honestly, many of them may be Dark sorcerers but the majority were justly famous the world over for their achievements and you can’t deny that they were great and accomplished wizards. Here, we ought to cite the examples of the Malfoys (the whole lot in Slytherin obviously), an ancient and extremely wealthy pure-blooded wizarding family and one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight, who held highly revered positions in the wizarding history of Britain down the ages that commanded respect from commoners, e.g., Draco Malfoy followed in his father Lucius’s footsteps to secure work at the British Ministry of Magic. Of them, Septimus Malfoy is considered to be the most influential, for many claimed that when he served as an advisor in the 18th century, the Minister of Magic, Unctuous Osbert, was little more than his puppet. All these prominent figures……How exactly did they attain their objectives, huh? Because they had ambition, coupled with a certain amount of shrewdness.False Stereotypes about Dark Magic:And they are not all about pure-blood supremacy, snobbishness, meanness and all other vices we associate them with. Severus Snape, Andromeda Tonks, Horace Slughorn & Albus Severus Potter were not any of those! (Snape changed his ideals, remember.) Even Draco Malfoy is an example, because he was never explicitly evil and although a racist initially, encouraged and indoctrinated by his parents with their pure-blood mania, can safely assume that he changed after the Second Wizarding War. Even Harry Potter himself admits to Albus that Slytherin is not necessarily bad for some of its Dark reputation. I hope you get my point. The stereotyping that Slytherins are odious and vile is, was, and forever will be, a delusion.Most of them do not have Dark leanings, as is evident when several Slytherin students returned with Horace Slughorn to resist Voldemort during the climax of the Battle of Hogwarts, while some fought on the frontline with Dumbledore’s Army, (as confirmed by J.K. Rowling). And we act like there have been no Dark wizards, none at all, from other Houses. Why, small groups of Death Eaters had their allegiances to houses other than Slytherin, e.g., Peter Pettigrew, who was a Gryffindor. Right? Right?Wrong.Compare & Contrast with other Hogwarts Houses:What is my evidence against Gryffindor? Yes I know many will argue, but muscles and brawn are not enough to succeed in life, as Severus Snape pointed out on the Hogwarts Express. The whole thing about chivalry and courage , which apparently originates from the virtues of Godric Gryffindor, seems rather lackluster without a sound mind to complement it. Brain and brawn, please, like Minerva McGonagall, Remus Lupin, Albus Dumbledore, Sirius Black and the Potters. Look before you leap. Additionally, (as J.K. Rowling puts it), majority of the Gryffindors remained to defend Hogwarts during the final battle against Voldemort and his Death Eaters since they were mere showboats. A bunch of inept show-offs these were (not all Gryffindors, only a handful). Now for Hufflepuff. They always seemed to me as superfluous students whose traits did not match those of the other houses, and were thereby sorted into education under Helga Hufflepuff (who is rumoured to have built the Room of Requirement). The Sorting Hat itself indirectly declaims this fact. Unlike Hufflepuffs however, Slytherins may not work hard but they work smart. Aside from Cedric Diggory, Newt Scamander (how the hell?) and Nymphadora Tonks, they strike me as mostly average, mediocre students. Plus we all know loyalty and dedication to a cause always gravely backfires by betraying us. See what befell Bartemius Crouch and Sirius Black as well as Bellatrix, all due to declaring themselves loyal to Voldemort/Order of the Phoenix. Cedric Diggory (to the Triwizard Tournament) and Nymphadora Tonks (to Remus Lupin and the Order) also perished in gruesome deaths as a result. It seems I stand corrected. That is to say, loyalty and kindness can easily be taken advantage of, which can prove to be as lethal as ambition gone haywire.Plus, Narcissa Malfoy (along with Phineas Nigellus Black through his words) verified the Slytherins’ courage and shrewdness by lying under the nose of the most dreaded wizard of the magical world (and consequently saving Harry Potter’s life in the Forbidden Forest) in centuries to save her sole son Draco. See, Slytherins are both brave and cunning.One may argue that Ravenclaw is better but fact is that Slytherins (most of them anyway) are not only intelligent but cunning, to the extent of shrewdness. Riddle used the campaign against Gellert Grindelwald and his army, plot to discredit Harry and Dumbledore, etc. to recruit Death Eaters, consolidate his hold and rise to power (not to mention he kept scapegoats ready and was willing to frame them in case he committed murder). Draco Malfoy devised a way to summon Death Eaters to Hogwarts Castle via a pair of Vanishing Cabinets, defying the millennium-old protective enchantments established at the school in the span of just one year. Also, there is such an extent of competition in academics amongst Ravenclaws that they may end up backstabbing you, as noted by a Slytherin prefect, one Gemma Farley, much like Quirinus Quirrell and Gilderoy Lockhart. What use is your intelligence, wit and originality if it does not find application?Unparalleled Cunning and Intelligence:All right, I anticipate that many of you will not have considered the reference I am going to mention this moment, that indeed is solid proof of the shrewdness of the Slytherins. Their intelligence can be traced back to the great Salazar Slytherin himself, who is undoubtedly one of the 4 founders of Hogwarts from whose surname Slytherin House derives its very name. Mannerisms of some of the Slytherins seem to stem from their House Founder himself.Villainous of sorts, Salazar Slytherin built the Chamber of Secrets, we all know that. But how many of us appreciate his achievement? Think of it. He erected a colossal chamber in the bowels of the castle, hundreds of miles underneath it, bred a freakingly titanic basilisk in it, kept it locked up in the chamber which was left unsealed, undetected and undiscovered for almost a millennium since its creation! None of the founders or the lineage of Headmasters ever rediscovered the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets, such cleverly concealed it (and along with it, the Serpent of Slytherin) was. How many of you have contemplated the magnitude of such wondrous a feat, taking into account the application of all magical spells known to sorcerers of that era? Given its description, Slytherin’s craftiness and astuteness surpasses even that of Rowena Ravenclaw!Making Real, Selfless Friends:How can I not mention their strong foundation of friendship and their tendency towards unrequited love? Slytherins are not always selfish, or Regulus Arcturus Black would have survived the Wizarding Wars had he not sacrificed his life to destroy Voldemort’s Locket Horcrux. The Bloody Baron, Severus Snape and Merlin unconditionally and passionately cherished their lifelong affection for Helena Ravenclaw, Lily Evans and the Lady of the Lake, respectively, although they were not necessarily reciprocated. The depth of their friendship can be imagined.Moreover, the unrivalled friendship between Slytherin and Gryffindor was solely compromised due to Slytherin’s anti-Muggle views and admission of only all-magical students, of pure-blood parentage, into Hogwarts.Draco Malfoy was only antagonistic to Harry Potter and blood traitors because of his anti-Muggle policies at that time, but he seemed to be moderately good-natured towards the Slytherins, with a group of numerous friends like Crabbe, Goyle, Zabini, Nott and Parkinson. See, it’s easy to make true friends in Slytherin, as Tom Marvolo Riddle would have done had he the ability to love and experienced the inherent fraternity and unification that Slytherins possess in copious quantities, thus considering Lestrange, Avery, etc. as his true friends, who accompanied him on his arduous journey merely to wish him luck in the Hog’s Head as he asked for the post of DADA teacher from Albus Dumbledore. Also, Crabbe and Goyle ran a risk by not reuniting with Voldemort during the Battle of Hogwarts and instead accompanied Draco Malfoy to the Room of Requirement to apprehend Harry Potter, who sought to destroy Ravenclaw’s Diadem, a Horcrux.So, why Slytherin?Slytherin always helps you on your way to becoming famous, if not the way you expect. They are always on top and achieve their aims due to their cunning and resourcefulness. Why, they won the House Cup championship for 7 years in a row before Harry Potter arrived at Hogwarts! You gotta give ’em credit, man!CONCLUSION:But, broadly speaking, in my opinion there is no such best house at Hogwarts. No one can be perfect but each of the houses are good in their own right. All houses are equally revered and talented and have their own unique, outstanding history.(P.S. I am a Slytherin on Pottermore and Merlin was a Slytherin. Why? One reason is enough.
