Ah, these pictures look innocent, right?Just students attending a school like everybody else……Wrong.These pictures are Indigenous children attending Residential Schools in Canada.What happened was in the late 19th century, the Government imposed two laws in Canada:The Indian Act (1876)Residential SchoolsThese two laws f*cked up Aboriginal society in Canada to this day.When the Indian Act was imposed, the Government worked with the Church to set-up Residential Schools across Canada. The point of these Residential Schools was to dehumanise and white-wash the Aboriginal people so they forget about their Indigenous culture and become more civilised. To quote as the church officials would say: “kill the Indian in the child.”What happened was these Indigenous children were forced to attend these Residential Schools. Attendance was mandatory until 1969. These children were kidnapped or taken away from their parents, attending a 10-month lasting school about being better-mannered people to fit in society.Throughout the Residential School life, many Indigenous children have stripped away from their cultures, beliefs and language. Some of these children in the photos looked sad—and it's true.Many wanted to escape this school dungeon but couldn’t. Some were brutally abused while some died from starvation. If they spoke their native language, they were punished severely. In addition, these Residential Schools were not sanitary. In fact, these schools were so dirty—that the living conditions were awful.Anyhow.Sometimes with great power and wealth comes with horrible abuse. While the Church portrayed themselves as good people, helping the Indigenous people to become more civilised—there is a dark side to this. We don’t see it with our own eyes but, these Church officials have physically, mentally, psychologically and sexually abuse these Indigenous children—that it had mentally scar them for life.In 2008, the former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has sent out a reconciliation apology—saying sorry on behalf of Canada’s Parliament. While the Government said sorry, the Canadian Anglican Church remained quiet with no response.The heartbreaking news of these Residential Schools is that this traumatisation affects many Indigenous people in the long run.
