How do I become supply chain analyst?

In most companies, a Supply Chain Analyst queries data from a database and makes sense of it.If you don't have an Engineering background your role would be limited to SQL and MS Excel.Sharpen your SQL skills. Plethora of online courses are available but by far, the best is Stanford’s Introduction to Databases by Jennifer Widom. Big Companies usually restrict the role to Data-Pulling and Data-Analysis. They have dedicated personnel for Database Design and Database Administration.MS Excel should be your second priority. Excel in itself is a very powerful tool. Most interviewers expect you to know Pivot Tables and basic functions. Again millions of YouTube videos to help you.If you have an Engineering background then you would need toFamiliarize yourself with an Optimization Tool. LINDO is the commonly used open source software. As for Data Analysis, math models like Regression are extensively used. If you want to use LINDO learn Linear and Non Linear Programming. Edx has a Supply Chain Specialization MOOC which covers these topics. All the best.

What would be a better option for a current CS student at Mumbai University, a Masters from a decent IIT or an MS abroad in the US?

What are you expecting from a PG ? The main difference between MS and Mtech in India vs MS in abroadWell if your aim is to land a high paying job (not to be rude or anything, but hey! this is what most of the people have in mind when they think of PG especially in right ?), then probably you need to land up only in an IIT (old ones) or IISc in an Mtech programme, which requires you to have an AIR < 250 to be safe. On the other hand, if you are genuinely interested in research then I would suggest you to consider an MS abroad which is not only easier to land in first place, but also is a fixed duration programme (1.5 - 2 yrs).Difference between MS Mtech in IndiaFirst of all why a MTech from IIT or your infatuation with IIT.If you want to get in an IIT because of all the awesome posts about them in Quora or you have n friends of yours in IIT and missed the golden bus during JEE then don't join period. There is a huge difference of expectation from Btech, DD, MS, Mtech and PhD student here and you will be truly dissapointed if you are expecting a Btech lifestyle and join for a masters programme.Coming back to the point, well Mtech, is a course oriented programme which requires you to earn majority of required credits through coursework and the rest of it through Mtech project. Whereas MS is exactly opposite of Mtech. Its a research oriented programmed (the one in which I am currently enrolled in) which requires you to publish couple of good quality research papers in international journals or conferences ( Not an easy task at all. It takes a considerable amount of effort equivalent to PhDs in some light universities). Statistically speaking, MS has a lower admission criteria (AIR <1000), but the quality and the amount of effort that is generally expected far exceeds compared to Mtech here (at least in IITM / IITD). Also it takes longer to finish MS ( ~3 - 3.5 yrs) as it is not a fixed duration course work oriented programme as in case of Mtech.MS abroad, is a different ballgame altogether which requires different kind of preparation. There are two variants of it there also: MS by course work and MS by research . MS by coursework normally takes 1.5yrs while MS by research takes 2yrs. (Please take this advice with a pinch of salt, as I personally have no experience here except from what I have heard from my friends who have done an MS abroad, but this is what I have inferred in general.)A word of caution: do not join MS if you are not really interested in research or have PhD plans later. Also do not join any PG programme any where just for the heck of it as its not worth it.Where to lookout for help ? What subjects to concentrate upon and what books to read ?Please do not join any coaching class or test series as GATE is not that toughand nor is the competition very high. Also the way they teach will make you forget the simplest of the core concepts. There is this nice online forum which is dedicated to gate preparation (I was a frequent visitor to this page during my GATE preparation). You can post your queries here and get decent answers from people who have cracked GATE and are currently studying in IITs.GATE exams are conducted by different IITs in a RR manner, so all you need to do is find out the organizing IIT and see what are the areas they are working on. As each IITs tend to have a different area of specialization, the GATE paper concentrates on the topics which are being currently researched upon there. The syllabus for GATE and CS BE is pretty much the same. So the easiest way to start preparation is to explore the syllabus beyond the notes, by actually referring the prescribed reference book .Here is the long list of books which I referred for different subjects during preparation.Operating Systems Deitel, GalvinDiscrete Mathematics Rosen, (Schaum series), LiuIntroduction to Algorithms CLRSC Programming Dennis RitchieAutomata theory Sipser (Hard but good), Schaum series one,Principles of Compilers design Aho ( the old book has better concepts )Networking (forgot the name)Digital logic Morris ManoComputer architecture StallingDatabase Sudarshan IITB, Navathe ??Hope I didn't mess your head so badly that you have are already packed GATE plans and started seriously considering for an MBA now.Best of luck for your preparation !!---I am currently doing MS in CS at IITM
