Been there, Hiroshima University / Graduate school of engineering / Computer science.Very few subjects were given in accordance to some textbooks, almost every professor has his own specific material to give his course.Despite the abundance of documentations available in Japanese, and fortunately the few courses which I took have textbooks in English, I believe it is the same thing you will encounter in all major universities in Japan: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kyuushu, Hirsohima, ..., so basically no need to worry too much.Are the homework and textbooks in hiraganaNO, you will never find that technical book which subtitles the kanji with Hiragana, never. It is either in English or in Japanese, of course the loan words are written in Katakana but it doesn't help much understanding the context.Let me finish this answer positively.The best part, is that even if you have a textbook in Japanese, you aren't obliged to crack it in order to succeed that course! you can always switch to other resources available in English, which are quite available in almost every Library / Laboratory.And, in graduate school, it is mostly about research subject than it relies on swallowing textbooks, so don't worry much. Go for it.

My high school has somewhere between 3 to 7 Education “doctorates” on the faculty at any time.In 1980, legendary science fiction author Robert Heinlein described the reality of Education “doctorates” in Number of the Beast where the protagonist earns a doctorate in Education.“I knew that the stupidest students, the silliest professors, and the worst bull courses are concentrated in schools of education.”Heinlein earned a degree in Engineering from the U.S. Navl Academy, placing 5th academically in his class.For the record, I’ve earned an MA in Educational Administration (+plus another 40 /- graduate units in Ed) and can tell you that my Education degree was far less challenging than my undergraduate studies in Theater Arts and Film, much less my master’s degree in Geosciences. But even when operating in their weakest domain, they are still better prepared than the average Education major.Graduate students in education tend to have the lowest GRE scores of any students doing post-graduate work.What kind of student majors in Education?The sad truth is that too many of tomorrow’s teachers and most of today’s and tomorrow’s professors of education come from a cohort of the most academically unchallenged, culturally ignorant and intellectually dim “scholars” that you can find in higher education.I put the word “scholar” in quote marks because I’ve met too many holders of advanced degrees in Education who are shockingly ignorant of basic history, science and literature.Example:A number of years ago I saw the movie Pearl Harbor in the theater. On Monday, I spoke to a teaching colleague about the movie and about how historically inaccurate it was. After a bit of hemming-and-hawing, my colleague admitted to not knowing what happened at Pearl Harbor.At first I thought he was kidding with me, but he eventually stated that he thought the U.S.A. had dropped the atom bomb on the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. I explained that the Japanese attacked America at Pearl Harbor and that in 1945 the U.S. dropped atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. My colleague then asked, where do you get the picture of the little Japanese girl with he clothes burned off. He was under the impression that the picture was from the U.S. bombing of Pearl Harbor.I just want to make clear. This colleague born and raised in the United States and earned a BA in Education and an MA in Education. The point of this story isn’t to say that ALL Education majors are so woefully ignorant, but merely to point out that as an Education major, close to nothing was required of him in terms of knowing anything worth knowing.This is not a new development.The man in the picture below is former Harvard President Lawrence Lowell.At his retirement in 1933, Lowell told Harvard’s board of overseers that the Harvard School of Education was the “kitten that should have been drowned.”Lowell’s views were hardly out of the mainstream. French literature professor Irvine Babbitt wrote “our professors of pedagogy and sociology are held in almost universal suspicion in academic circles, and are not infrequently looked upon by their colleagues as downright charlatans.”There is no such thing as a prestigious Education Degree. Even Doctorates in Education from elite colleges are generally not thought of as legitimate degrees among those who respect actual scholarship.Because they are the easiest doctorate degrees to earn, doctorates in Education are also the most plentiful. They are hardly rare.
