What's it like to go to grad school in Japan for electrical engineering?

Been there, Hiroshima University / Graduate school of engineering / Computer science.Very few subjects were given in accordance to some textbooks, almost every professor has his own specific material to give his course.Despite the abundance of documentations available in Japanese, and fortunately the few courses which I took have textbooks in English, I believe it is the same thing you will encounter in all major universities in Japan: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kyuushu, Hirsohima, ..., so basically no need to worry too much. Are the homework and textbooks in hiraganaNO, you will never find that technical book which subtitles the kanji with Hiragana, never. It is either in English or in Japanese, of course the loan words are written in Katakana but it doesn't help much understanding the context.Let me finish this answer positively. The best part, is that even if you have a textbook in Japanese, you aren't obliged to crack it in order to succeed that course! you can always switch to other resources available in English, which are quite available in almost every Library / Laboratory. And, in graduate school, it is mostly about research subject than it relies on swallowing textbooks, so don't worry much. Go for it.

Who is in charge of WHO? Any doctor or nurse can tell you if you catch a virus you are unlikely to catch it again due to antibodies.

Any doctor or nurse would tell you… that each virus is different. Some confer no lasting immunity, others confer immunity for a few months. Some are incurable, others can be fought off and defeated by the average human. In some cases, we have vaccines that provide some protection for a year or two. In other cases, like HIV, decades of research has not led to a vaccine.Any doctor or nurse or college student studying viruses or epidemics can tell you things that are more subtle and more clearly backed by science than your original question. I suggest that you try actual listening to them. The chairman of the executive board of the World Health Organization is Dr Hiroki Nakatani of Japan.During the past four years, Dr Hiroki Nakatani has held academic positions in Japan as Project Professor at the Global Research Institute of Keio University, and Invited Professor at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine. He also serves in advisory and leadership capacities in various national and international organizations, including as Minister’s Advisor on International Affairs, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan; Chair of the Board of Directors, Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund); Project Director, Hub on Population Ageing, Association of Pacific Rim Universities; Member of the Board of Directors, National Center for Global Health and Medicine in Japan; and Director, Human Resource Strategy Center for Global Health.A veteran public health specialist with over 40 years of experience, Dr Nakatani has worked extensively in the areas of health policy, public health, international health and health science and technology. At national level, he started his career at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and later served as Director-General of Health and Welfare Services in Hiroshima Prefecture, where he was in charge of integrating health and welfare services for a rapidly ageing society. At international level, he served in WHO headquarters twice, from April 1988 to March 1993 as Policy Analysist in the Department of Human Resources for Health, and from March 2007 to May 2015 as Assistant Director- General, leading the largest technical cluster of WHO comprising HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases.During his tenure, morbidity and mortality due to these three major infections showed declining trends, and several tropical diseases were on track towards elimination or eradication (dracunculiasis, or guinea-worm disease).Dr Nakatani received his MD from Keio University School of Medicine, MHPEd from the University of New South Wales, and PhD from Keio University.

Does Dr. Jill Biden have a PhD in education? I thought that those were extremely rare.

Jill Biden’s degree is an Ed.D., rather than a Ph.D. They are very common degrees. Over 12,000 of them were awarded in the U.S. in the 2017–18 academic year.PhDs and EdDs in Education are basically the participation trophy of doctorate degrees. My high school has somewhere between 3 to 7 Education “doctorates” on the faculty at any time.In 1980, legendary science fiction author Robert Heinlein described the reality of Education “doctorates” in Number of the Beast where the protagonist earns a doctorate in Education.“I knew that the stupidest students, the silliest professors, and the worst bull courses are concentrated in schools of education.”Heinlein earned a degree in Engineering from the U.S. Navl Academy, placing 5th academically in his class. For the record, I’ve earned an MA in Educational Administration (+plus another 40 /- graduate units in Ed) and can tell you that my Education degree was far less challenging than my undergraduate studies in Theater Arts and Film, much less my master’s degree in Geosciences. I love Heinlein’s description."Eventually I had to pick a research problem or give up the advantages of being a student. I was sick of a school in which the pie was all meringue and no filling but I stuck as I knew how to cope with courses in which the answers are matters of opinion and the opinion that counts is that of the professor. And how to cope with those large-class evening lectures: Buy the lecture notes. Read everything that professor ever published. Don't cut too often and when you do show up, get there early, sit front row center, be certain the prof catches your eye every time he looks your way-by never taking your eyes off him. Ask one question you know he can answer because you've picked it out of his published papers-and state your name in asking a question. Luckily 'Zebadiah Carter' is a name easy to remember. Family, I got straight 'A's' in both required courses and seminars... because I did not study 'education,' I studied professors of education."But I still had to make that 'original contribution to human knowledge' without which a candidate may not be awarded a doctor's degree in most so-called disciplines... and the few that don't require it are a tough row to hoe."I studied my faculty committee before letting myself be tied down to a research problem... not only reading everything each had published but also buying their publications or paying the library to make copies of out-of-print papers."…here follows the title of my dissertation. … 'An Ad-Hoc Inquiry Concerning the Optimization of the Infrastructure of Primary Educational Institutions at the Interface Between Administration and Instruction, with Special Attention to Group Dynamics Desiderata."…While that paper totally lacks meaning it is a literary gem in the sense in which a successful forging of an 'old master' is itself a work of art. It is loaded with buzz words. The average length of sentences is eighty-one words. The average word length, discounting 'of,' 'a,' 'the,' and other syntactical particles, is eleven-plus letters in slightly under four syllables. The bibliography is longer than the dissertation and cites three papers of each member of my committee and four of the chairman, and those citations are quoted in part-while avoiding any mention of matters on which I knew that members of the committee held divergent (but equally stupid) opinions."But the best touch was to get permission to do field work in Europe and have it count toward time on campus; half the citations were in foreign languages, ranging from Finnish to Croatian-and the translated bits invariably agreed with the prejudices of my committee. It took careful quoting out of context to achieve this, but it had the advantage that the papers were unlikely to be on campus and my committee were not likely to go to the trouble of looking them up even if they were. Most of them weren't at home in other languages, even easy ones like French, German, and Spanish. The low quality of Education “students” isn’t limited to those at the doctoral level. Years ago I read Inside American Education, by economist Thomas Sowell. In his book Sowell pointed out several facts about those studying and teaching education:Education majors have lower SAT verbal scores than Mechanical Engineering majors.Education majors have lower SAT quantitative scores than English or Theater majors.English majors are notoriously weak in mathematics, but not as weak as Education majors. Mechanical Engineers aren’t exactly known for their ability to write well. But even when operating in their weakest domain, they are still better prepared than the average Education major.Graduate students in education tend to have the lowest GRE scores of any students doing post-graduate work. What kind of student majors in Education? The sad truth is that too many of tomorrow’s teachers and most of today’s and tomorrow’s professors of education come from a cohort of the most academically unchallenged, culturally ignorant and intellectually dim “scholars” that you can find in higher education.I put the word “scholar” in quote marks because I’ve met too many holders of advanced degrees in Education who are shockingly ignorant of basic history, science and literature.Example:A number of years ago I saw the movie Pearl Harbor in the theater. On Monday, I spoke to a teaching colleague about the movie and about how historically inaccurate it was. After a bit of hemming-and-hawing, my colleague admitted to not knowing what happened at Pearl Harbor. At first I thought he was kidding with me, but he eventually stated that he thought the U.S.A. had dropped the atom bomb on the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. I explained that the Japanese attacked America at Pearl Harbor and that in 1945 the U.S. dropped atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. My colleague then asked, where do you get the picture of the little Japanese girl with he clothes burned off. He was under the impression that the picture was from the U.S. bombing of Pearl Harbor.I just want to make clear. This colleague born and raised in the United States and earned a BA in Education and an MA in Education. The point of this story isn’t to say that ALL Education majors are so woefully ignorant, but merely to point out that as an Education major, close to nothing was required of him in terms of knowing anything worth knowing. This is not a new development. The man in the picture below is former Harvard President Lawrence Lowell. At his retirement in 1933, Lowell told Harvard’s board of overseers that the Harvard School of Education was the “kitten that should have been drowned.”Lowell’s views were hardly out of the mainstream. French literature professor Irvine Babbitt wrote “our professors of pedagogy and sociology are held in almost universal suspicion in academic circles, and are not infrequently looked upon by their colleagues as downright charlatans.”There is no such thing as a prestigious Education Degree. Even Doctorates in Education from elite colleges are generally not thought of as legitimate degrees among those who respect actual scholarship.Because they are the easiest doctorate degrees to earn, doctorates in Education are also the most plentiful. They are hardly rare.
