PDF Editor FAQ

Can your boss change your schedule at the last minute?

Absolutely! He is paying for your time. If it's not outside your job description, this is the deal you signed up for. You are free to seek out another job.Reminds me of a fellow I tutored when I joined Literacy Volunteers for America. All of us volunteers celebrated when he passed his driver's license test, the reason why he asked for our help. This enabled him to drive to interviews and very soon thereafter, secure a job stocking shelves in a grocery store. We were then doubly elated when we got this news, he was turning his life around after a very long stretch of poverty and misery for him and his family. Unemployment in this region was at an all time low, almost impossible for anyone with his lack of experience and skills to get hired. We were so happy for him, proud for us! A big and emotional success story is the little holy grail for all nonprofits.Next time I saw him, I began to congratulate him but he stopped me, he was furious. Like it had just happened minutes ago, he yelled “I quit! I had to quit!”I said, “oh no, oh dear, why? What happened?” He exclaimed, “She just kept telling me what to do! She wouldn't quit telling me what to do! I don't like people telling me what to do!”Unclear on the concept.

How can I get volunteers for my nonprofit organisation?

Tom Brush really hit the nail on the head!To add to that, I have found that when you create your volunteer positions, it is best to type them up in the same style as an actual job position. Listing who they report to, specific duties, length of volunteer commitment, required skills, etc. This is really helpful for you as well as for anyone looking to volunteer. Like Tom said, you will be asked! It gives it an air of professionalism and, in my experience, seems to elicit more of a commitment from volunteers because it feels so official.I have also had a lot of luck with using VolunteerMatch - Where Volunteering Begins, as was suggested. Use a catchy sounding, yet descriptive volunteer opportunity name and make sure to have the position description sound interesting while also pointing out the benefits to the mission. People like to know what they will be expected to do, what they may get for it “Free donuts and shirts!” and how what they do will help others. If you have anyone on your board, or within your support circle who are heavily involved in the media as a news anchor or radio host, consider asking him/her to mention on air your need for volunteers. Or even just on his/her individual social media accounts. That tends to go a long way as well.On the other hand, if you are looking for volunteers with certain levels of expertise instead of just a mass number of them to help with a large one-time event, you will have to do some research in your community. For instance, if you are looking for on-going tutors for adult literacy students, target retired teacher organizations, college students who are studying education, etc.If you need more targeted suggestions, feel free to comment whether you are located in the US, and what type of volunteers you are seeking. I’m happy to help with ideas if I am able.

What does one experience when immigrating to Canada as a refugee? I am working on a school assignment that requires me to create a profile of five different people who have become Canadians. Would anyone be willing to give a brief description?

I'm a volunteer English tutor for two refugee families. One family had LOTS of help from their sponsoring group. The other arrived with NO help afterwards.Family one: escaped in the night two days after their third child was born. The father had escaped from jail and was hit by a car. He had car parts still in his chest and an arm broken in several pieces. He could not carry his toddlers. Prior to this, the mom watched her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles publically beheaded. There were in a camp somewhere for two years. The father did not get medical care there. Nothing. They arrived in winter. The father had heart surgery a few days after arriving. No English. The parents were traumatized and their son was terribly angry. They moved into a place that had bedbugs. The mother could not cope with that. Both parents went to free English school for newcomers. No car. Boy age 9, girl age 6, girl age 2. The mother is glad to be in Canada, but sometimes wants to go to Turkey because her brother is there. She is pregnant because she didn't know much about birth control. She tries hard to be happy. She accepts our help. She likes Canadian laws. She cries so hard sometimes. It breaks my heart. She is 29.Family two: arrived in winter and was assigned an apartment and living expenses. Afraid of cold and snow. They don't have any help. They don’t understand the mail. The mom is having a problem pregnancy and cannot speak English with a doctor. The baby dies. The daughter flourishes. Age 9, she now speaks five languages and can translate. The mother cries a lot. She fluctuates between being glad to be safe, but she is so lonely that it makes her sick. She believes that English is too hard for her to learn. She finds that being on welfare is so humiliating. She is here in Canada so her little girl doesn't get killed. This family is Kurdish. In Syria, they could have been killed for speaking Kurdish publicly. It is their first language, but they learned Arabic at school. Learning English without having a literacy base in their first language is problematic.I asked the daughter if I could see pictures of her when she was a baby. She said ‘they’ came to their house and took everything, including the CD with all their family pics, and her computer, her books, and everything else. They walked away with their wallets and clothes. All their family pics are gone. Now your job is to consider the conditions and what they need.
