You, sir, are already in the people business. And that’s what sales is - the people business.In college, I worked as a server at LaBare in Houston, TX. This is a male strip club that caters to women. I was a meathead and I was looking for a fun job. I worked with guys named “Buff” and “Sebastian.” I was “David.”I only worked there on Friday and Saturday nights. Every night I worked my GM would tell all of us, “Don’t just serve drinks. Sell them.” He said this to all of us repeatedly. It took me a little while to get what he was saying. Don’t just be an order taker. Rather, build value and sell more drinks. And sell more expensive drinks.Oh I was in the people business alright - the drunk-women people business!We’d sell these larger glasses in the shape of a male torso with the LaBare name on it - sort or a souvenir glass for the ladies. Of course they were more expensive which meant larger tips for me. “Would you like your Rum and Coke served in one of our specialty glasses? It’s larger and you get to take it home with you so you’ll always remember this special night with your best friend. Plus, it’s in the shape of my chest!” Boom! That was it. I didn’t do anything special. I simply put the option out there, tried to be humorous, and asked for the business.Simple, right? Well, you’d be surprised at how many “sales people” don’t ask for the business.When I was in F&I at the dealership, I was trained to present 100% of the products 100% of the time. If I don’t present my customer the options and I don’t ask for the business then I would be making the buying decision for my customer - and that would be a disservice.In the insurance industry, there is a select group of “Million Dollar Round Table” life insurance agents. These guys and gals sell tons and tons of life insurance (and/or financial services). I asked an MDRT agent once, “So what do you do that’s different from all the other agents that are not MDRT?” He replied, “Well I role play, I make myself available for Saturday appointments, and I always ask in EVERY customer interaction, ‘Who’s your life insurance with?’”It doesn’t matter what you sell: drinks, cars, insurance, real estate, widgets - you’re in the people business. You have 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason. Listen more than you talk. People will tell you how they want to be sold. I mean really, actively listen. Do this, know your product and your competition, and you can be successful in any sales career - no matter what you sell.All of this should serve you as a rebuttal if/when you get asked the question in an interview like, “Tell me about any previous sales experience.” Have your bartending stories ready and you should blow the interviewer away.And always bring it back to the people business.Good luck!

From an Investor’s perspective, none, since an investor should go to the Scrip Market or MF market for making money.If the intention is to ask whether it makes sense from the point of the insurance customer’s perspective, the only significance is that the agent has done so much of business that he has substantial experience HANDLING a great great many CUSTOMERS.But it does not necessarily guarantee quality, service in time and even personal attention. Everything depends on the person’s commitment and integrity which should be your guarantee that he would give you the best of the advice.
