Well there are certainly a lot of blunders that the Indian PMs have made in the Indian History but let us shed light on that one decision that first came to my mind when I read this question. I will give a brief background of the circumstances that led to the decision and also the after effects of the same.Rajiv Gandhi: The Shah Bano Begum Case :-i) Background:In 1978, a prosperous Muslim lawyer Muhammad Ahmed Khan unilaterally divorced his wife Shah Bano over an inheritance dispute. After the divorce Muhammad paid his wife a paltry 3000 rupees as the Mahr amount which was obviously not enough for the aged wife to survive. The case was taken to the district magistrate and later to the MP high court, which ordered her husband to pay 179.20 per month to Shah Bano as maintenance. Muhammad khan then approached the supreme court to challenge the judgement of the high court.ii) The Historic Judgement:Considering the fact that there had been two similar cases earlier wherein the court had ordered to give away the necessary maintenance to the Muslim women, the case should have been a straightforward one. However the two judge bench felt that the earlier judgements failed to study the matter in depth, and hence a larger panel of 5 judges(4 non-Muslim judges and 1 did not reveal his religion) was formed to study the case. The judges studied the matter meticulously and also referred to the holy Quran and interpreted that the husband was duty-bound to take care of his wife. Thus the bench unanimously supported Shah Bano and confirmed the maintenance amount by the MP high court.The difference between the two previous cases and the Shah Bano case was that the judges had interpreted the holy Quran in the Shah Bano case and then delivered the judgement. This was not acceptable to some conservative Muslims as they felt that the supreme court is interfering in their personal religious matters. There were widespread protests to make constitutional amendments to repeal the supreme court judgement. But some broad minded and liberal Muslims had supported the judgement and the justice that was given to Shah Banu in the Case.iii)Blunder no 1:Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest Prime Prime Minister of the country and was known for his rational thinking. But he crumbled under the pressure of the conservative Muslims and passed the Muslim Women's Protection in Divorce Act 1986. According to this Act, the husband is liable to pay maintenance to his wife only for a period of 3 months after the divorce thus eliminating the supreme court decision.He was deeply criticized for his discriminative policies and for favoring the Muslims for their votes. The main reason why he took the decision was because the congress suffered a massive defeat in the Muslim-dominated regions in the state elections and he did not want to lose their vote bank. This led to tensions between Hindus and the Muslims and also spoiled his and the party's secular credentials. The BJP capitalized on the anger that was instilled in the minds of the Hindu people and grew from just two parliamentary seats in 1984 to 85 in 1989, 119 in 1991 and 182 in 1998 and subsequently came to power until its defeat in 2004.iv) Blunder no 2 :Rajiv Gandhi now realized that in his attempt to please the Muslims, he had angered the Hindus and now started caring for the Hindu Vote Bank. On 30th Jan, 1986 the Faizabad district court ordered to open the locks of the disputed mosque, which was shut down since 1949 because of the dispute that the place of the mosque is also the birth place of Lord Ram. This allowed the Hindus to enter the premises and do poojas. The judgement was implemented within 40 mins and the opening of the mosque was also telecasted on the Doordarshan. It is said that the PM Rajiv Gandhi and the congress government did this in order to appease the Hindus after the dissent that was caused due to the Shah Bano case.The decision led to widespread protests throughout the country and also to the worst Hindu Muslim Clashes. Later on the Babri masjid was demolished in 1992 leading to further clashes and adversely affected the politics in India. In protest of the Demolition of the Babri masjid, the 1993 riots took place in Mumbai, which led to the serial bomb blasts and hundreds of innocent people were killed.v) Conclusion:If Rajiv Gandhi had not challenged the supreme court judgement, he would have avoided the Babri masjid demolition, the Mumbai serial blasts and the current caste based politics that takes place in India. It is prevented from violating the Rights of the American people as established in the Bill of Rights in the Constitution, and is a democratic republic form of government.An American is a person who believes that all humans are created with certain Rights, among them life, liberty, the right to defend themselves, the right to own property, the right to assemble, the right to personal religious beliefs and the expression thereof, the right to peacefully protest, and others as explicitly listed in the Bill of Rights in the Constitution.An American is a person who believes in the Constitution, and the Rule of Law as derived from it. Every human being is created equal in the eyes of the law and it is one of the responsibilities of society to assure the equal treatment of all people by the government in all it’s forms and in every impact, as well as by the judicial system.An American is either a) a person naturally born is this country, or to American parents in any other country or b) an immigrant who has become a citizen. Only genuine American citizen can vote in our elections.An American is a person who refuses to allow any other nation or community of nations to establish sovereignty over the United State of America, over the Rule of Law as established in the Constitution, or any of the States of the Union.An American is person who agrees to do whatever is necessary to defend this country against an encroachment of another nation, community of nations, or religion on the land that is the property of the United States of America or the citizens of this country.There are probably other things that could belong in this list, but I think is the majority of what Trump and his supporters would agree to be what it means to be truly an American.
