Did solving HCV change your approach towards physics?

There are three books which completely changed my attitude towards physics.Fundamentals of physics by Haliday, Resnick and Walker. Until I started reading this book my favourite subject was chemistry. After I started reading this physics became my favourite subject.HC Verma. The theory is presented beautifully in this book. For example the analogy written near photoelectric effect( about throwing water packets to water plants). The problems also developed a skill of interconnecting the concepts and applying mathematical concepts to solve problems. I liked the difficulty of problems that come at the end of exercise. HC Verma sir recommends to solve the problems in the order provided.NCERT. This book is neglected by many students but trust me this book is really amazing. I would be in deep sense of wonder and I would say out Oh!, Oho! etc at least 10–15 times per chapter. I found 12 th class NCERT books really amazing. The standard of problems is also very good. These three books changed my approach physics and have collectively contributed in making physics my favourite subject.

Have you ever seen a student get roasted by a teacher?

My eighth grade math teacher was something of a legend at our school. She was Russian, with bright red dyed hair and a thick accent. She was famous for always telling her kids to ‘struggle’ (with her accent it sounded like ‘strahgle!’ and was her trademark phrase). She would give us these immensely thick homework packets to complete, always on peach-colored paper that we would call peach packets. On days when classes were goofing off too much (or she was in a bad mood), she would pass out a red calculator to the biggest trouble-maker. This red calculator signaled a detention, and whoever had it at the end of the period would get the detention. Needless to say, the person who got it first would shut up and be on their best behavior, causing the calculator to transition to another student. Sometimes these detentions were serious, other times they were silly. My brother got one for smiling too much (our school makes you write a little reflection paper in detentions on how you’ll improve your behavior and he wrote his on how he planned to become more emo and depressed. They hung it up in the office as a joke). Another friend of mine got one for being too happy. I received one for flying (don’t ask me how).Anyways, all of that is just background to the story I have to tell. One day, we were all goofing off. It was near the end of the year and everybody was in a good mood because the sun was out. I decided, since I had finished my homework early, to create a tower out of the cardboard partitions we’d put up during tests to prevent cheating. I ended up building a tower that was so tall it almost touched the ceiling. Another goofball in my class decided to mount an attack against my tower, and started throwing things at it to bring it down. One of these things was a rubber eraser, which ricocheted off the tower and hit our lovely teacher in the middle of her forehead. We all immediately sobered up, worried she would get angry with us. She made me deconstruct the test-taker-tower immediately and instructed the other goofball to call his parents and ask them what they thought a suitable punishment would be for his actions. At this point we could tell she was joking, but it was entirely possible she would get mad and put in place some nasty consequences if we didn’t take these lighter ones seriously. So the goofball calls his parents. Fun fact: he just happened to be Russian as well. When his mom picks up he starts speaking in murmured Russian to her, explaining what happened. In the aftermath of the incident, the entire classroom is silent while working, so we can all hear him practically whisper to his mother on the phone, even though none of us understand what he’s saying. We’ve all tuned the conversation out as we keep our heads in our peach packets when, quite loudly, our teacher pipes in to his conversation and commands him, once more in her thick Russian accent: “don’t lie”. He proceeded to lose his shit laughing, and all of us followed suit. Apparently he had been constructing an elaborate story about how he dropped his eraser and it had been knocked into the teacher, forgetting that she knew Russian as well. She called his bluff and he served a detention as a result, claiming on his reflective form not that he would stop lying, but that in the future he would remember what languages his teacher spoke.
