PDF Editor FAQ

Does CNN's gigapixel photo of President Trump's inauguration confirm that the crowd was larger than what the media reported?

Nope. If anything, it’s corroborating evidence of the reported size of the crowd at President Trump’s inauguration. The reason why pictures taken from the Capitol Building/Inauguration platform of the crowd down the Mall look denser than from the overhead shot published by Reuters is nothing more nefarious than a perspective shift. Two areas of equal space do not appear to be the same when one of them is farther away/closer to the apparent horizon; and the closer you are to the ground, the closer the apparent horizon.During the Inauguration, there were six designated, general-viewing areas along the National Mall:The Silver Ticket area between Third Street and Fourth StreetTwo between Fourth Street and Seventh StreetThree between Seventh Street and Twelfth Street, where the Media Village Press Filing Center (“the Village”) was located. Each area was further bounded by the existing pedestrian pathways and, from closest to the Capitol to the farthest, have the following, approximate surface areas (in square meters) as estimated from satellite imagery:7500 (150 x 55)9350 (170 x 55)8000 (150 x 55)6600 (120 x 55)7500 (150 x 55)7500 (150 x 55)These areas are obvious to discern from the overhead view†:However, despite having roughly equal areas, the viewing area near the media village is an apparent fraction of the size of the Silver Ticket area in the Gigapixel photo:This means that any obvious gaps or low-density areas that can be obviously spotted in the viewing areas......are larger than their apparent size the farther back in the crowd you go.Additionally, since it’s clear that the Gigapixel photo is a picture of the crowd as it existed when Trump was giving his Inaugural Address, which we would assume was near-to-peak for the crowd, we can compare those gaps to the overhead view at the same time:And we can see that they very crudely match.† Screenshot taken from PBS Newshour’s timelapse of the Inauguration, with timestamp preserved to confirm it was taken at the approximate time as the President’s swearing-in.Related reading: What was the estimated crowd size for President Trump's inauguration?

Do you agree with this photo about multiculturalism?

No. It’s rather silly. The images on the right aren’t reflective of a multicultural society. I can find very different cultural experiences in my Bay Area, ranging from Jewish celebrations, Little Kabul down in Fremont, Chinatown and Clement Street, the Bayview district in San Francisco and the predominantly black area of Oakland in which my church is located, the upscale commercialized areas such as Solano Avenue, Fourth Street in Berkeley, and Rockridge in Oakland, the Latino areas of nearby Richmond, and so much more. They don’t all look, sound, smell, or taste alike, not even close. The journey to acceptance of others is mostly internal, not external. There are many people who travel the globe but refuse to open their eyes. There are many people who notice, appreciate, and embrace diversity without travel.

How can I tell the police that I need help without saying it outright because of a danger nearby? Is there some code?

Just an example:Emergency operator: What is the purpose of your call?Me: Hey mom! I was just letting you know another one of my friends is FOLLOWING me…Operator: Are you under duress ma'am?Me: Yes, mom. I wont follow this guy back.Operator: Do you need the police or firefighters?Me: Oh, btw, I need you to pick up some Copsicles for me from the store.Operator: Can you get into a more public area?Me: No mom, I cant turn around now, I'm too far from home.Operator: I've got your location, police will be there soon. Keep talking to me. Can you describe the man?Me: Chad looks SO hot at school. With his perfect wavy golden brown hair, and oh my gosh, mom! He's gotta be like six feet tall! And he had those soulful blue eyes…Operator: Police are two minutes out. Get to your closest busy street.Me: Fine Mom, I'll go to Fourth Street now. I'm getting closer to figuring out what's off with that Maid statue.Operator: One minute out ma'am. Is he still following?Me: Mom!!! Omg! I cant believe how close we are getting. And he's making all the moves.Operator: The police are at the statue waiting for you. Just get in the car quickly, and they'll take you to the station.Me: Ok, mom. Thanks for the chat.Edit/\For all of you who are confused, this is what happened to my friend. She had never made a police call before, and she was trying not to start freaking out. She has had past experiences with stalkers and such. She later joked that, “That stupid improv class was really put to good use!”She has definitely done more research into that now, and knows how to safely make calls like that. One can only hope that never happens to her again. I'm not recommending this, just saying that my friend did this and it worked for her.
