Wow there are SO many great neighborhoods in the city of Ithaca, each with their own “feel” and their own set of pros and cons, depending on what kind of experience you are looking for, and what your needs and preferences are. There are also great neighborhoods that are outside of the city limits! So what does “best” mean to you?The “best” is to be able to check out several neighborhoods by living there for extended periods, before “settling in” — and I lived and house-sat in 5 different neighborhoods, before an extended rental on the outskirts of town, close to the Cornell Plantations.Then I felt drawn to living downtown again. I wanted to live “on the flats” close to the downtown commons, so I could bike and walk to places nearby easily (including 2 different creeks with great waterfalls!), and be centrally located to easily drive to the 3 state parks with summer time swimming, and the other local parks and green spaces, of which there are MANY.And I love it here. I live on the fringe of the neighborhood called Fall Creek, and of course, I think it is The Best.

Cornell University owns huge tracts of land in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier. Hunting is allowed on some of these, particularly for deer. Cornell Botanic Gardens (formerly Plantations) has a series of properties that function as preserves (Natural Areas | Cornell Botanic Gardens). Some of these function as research locations as well.
