PDF Editor FAQ

I see more and more seniors working in menial jobs to survive. Why does America take such poor care of the elderly?

Well, we didn’t use to throw the elderly to the wolves.Once upon a time, the majority of America’s employers had the following benefits for their employees:Lifetime/longtime employment if you were a good employeeLifetime pensions once you chose to retireTraining on the job if you wanted to learn and were smart enough to learn.Medical coverage for the family, and as part of your retirement plan-you paid a minimal amount of your salary for the coverage, and copays were affordable for most.Seniors who retired as recently as the ‘90’s had those things. Unless you worked a menial job as a young person, you didn’t really have to spend much time worrying about keeping a job or staying employed.Once the 1980’s came along, all that started to end:Companies stopped offering pensions when the 401 (k) was adopted. Now, instead of retiring with a set income for life like a pension provided, you had to make sure your 401 (k) didn’t run out before you died-and of course, you can’t know how much money you’ll require since you don’t know when you are going to die.Medical costs started to rise faster than wages-meaning more middle class people pay more, get less coverage, and if you are chronically ill, you can be bankrupted by medical costs that can hamper you in your retirement. Of course, the illness can also affect your ability to work-you might be forced to stop working before retirement age.Employment became more tenuous-employers were more likely to fire employees for any reason. Being a good employee, being smart, being willing to work was no longer enough. Your employment depended on the company stock performance. If the CEO wanted to squeeze more money out of the company to please Wall Street and pad their pockets, you were gone, no matter what you did.And of course, if your company dried up and disappeared, like Enron did, your pension went with it. There were a lot of middle aged workers left high and dry when that company folded and that was it for them. When you are fifty years old and you have no 401 (k) or pension, you can’t retire.Today’s seniors got caught in between these trends. Social security was never meant to be the only source of income for people who are retired-pensions were supposed to be part of the equation, and when a person looked at retiring, they could know what their lifetime incomes would be since the pension would continue until their death. But now, with the 401 (k), it is possible to outlive your money-and if you do, you need to get another job to survive. Many seniors you see in the workforce either never had pensions and Social Security isn’t enough, or they simply outlived their money-and have to work.America’s leaders on economic policy now believe that it is more important to help millionaires and billionaires than it is to shore up the lower and middle economic classes. This belief has ruled economic policy in this country for the last 30 years or so. Tax cuts and deregulation only help these guys-nobody else. I think 30+ years of this experiment pretty much shows that to be true-the 1% has gained far more wealth than any other income group. And of course, cost of living has hit the middle and lower classes hard:But as you can see, wages haven’t kept up. So, since your pension level is dependent on the wage you were earning (if you were lucky enough to retire with one), it is possible your pension will simply not be able to keep up, particularly for medical costs (as you get older, you start to need more medical attention in general).

Why don't the refugees stay to fight for their country, rather than traveling to countries who obviously hate them? Why won't they fight ISIS off their lands?

If you go fight for your country, will your country take care of your wife and kids? No? Well then.If you have any personal experience in war time countries, you'll see that once the social structure breaks down, and you are the man of the family, you are pretty much the only chance of survival for your aging parents, your wife, and your kids. Especially in Muslim countries where most women don't / can't work. If you leave to join the army, your wife and kids will be begging in the street, be killed by random snipers, be raped and sold if they fall in the wrong hands. The ones who go to fight are either unmarried young men with some kind of ideological pursuit, or people with strong vested interest. For example, if you are an officer in the Syrian army, if you die in battle, the government will pay your family a pension. If you don't fight, the rebels will surely massacre you and your family. Then you fight. The last group are people who already lost their family in the war. They fight because they hate the other side. With any given country, the ones who have a reason to fight will be in the minority. The majority will be the ones with family obligations and they'd rather take their family to some place safe.If you remember WWII, and how every single country implemented more and more stringent conscription, you'll see that it's actually NOT human nature to stay and fight. It's human nature to run, unless they are backed into a corner. You don't need conscription if even 5% of the population would volunteer in WWII.The other thing you have to realize is that it's a CIVIL WAR now in Syria, Iraq, and Libya. Defensive wars against foreign armies will often make the people come together, but civil wars just tear the people apart. There will be a lot of people with friends and relatives on both sides, and they would rather get out than having to shoot each other!

What's the harsh truth about the people who end up alone?

We knew an old woman (age around 75 yrs) who lived in Delhi. She was always alone as she did not get along with anybody. She drove away her son and daughter due to her short temper but boldly lived in a cottage all by herself. She had cats and a labrador for company. She had one maid who came to do basic cleaning and some simple cooking. Often this maid was asked to not come as the old granny was not well enough to eat. She rested her stomach regularly. She hardly talked to neighbours as she felt they took advantage of her.Her income was from her husband's pension and some monthly income deposits . Her daughter visited her with gifts twice a year, son probably called over the phone. But the maid reported that she drove them away with her unloving behaviour, complaining nature or short temper. She was healthy, mobile, took the labrador for walks, went to the local park, medical shop, temple and to a local library. One fine day she passed away in her sleep. Her maid found the door locked, presumed she wasn't wanted for work. When this continued for a week the maid took the neighbour’s and watchman’s help who finally called the police to break open the door. Her body had decomposed for a week by then and she was given a quick burial by her family.Moral.. Whether you want people when you are alive or not, you do need people when you die. Cats and dogs don't know you are dead and you need to be buried or burnt. That's life. You live alone, you live sad, you die alone. You live with others, you live happily, you have them for your funeral, for a last tear- filled good bye!!
