It may be noted that the guidelines are available in the public domain,” the BMC letter stated.“Considering that it is only the fifth day of his arrival, and since the request to exempt from home isolation to go back to Patna has come from Patna police, and considering the provision in the SOP (standard operating procedure) to exempt passengers on a short duration visit, it is hereby decided to exempt Mr. Vinay Tiwari from home quarantine subject to fulfilling the following conditions. He shall leave Maharashtra before the seventh day of the start of quarantine (before August 8),” the letter stated.Tiwari left for the Mumbai airport on Friday afternoon.While speaking to the media, Tiwari said, “I was not quarantined, but the investigation was quarantined. We did whatever we could do, and definitely there were hurdles in our investigations. Now, the investigation is with the CBI, and I cannot comment on it. But we will submit all investigation-related details we did in the Supreme Court.”Meanwhile, BMC on Friday also tweeted a notification reading, “Some instances have come to notice that some government officials after landing in Mumbai show their government ID card and secure exemption. By this order, it is clarified that any exemption for government servant contributing for its office has to be made in writing to BMC two days in advance justifying the reason for exemption for home quarantine. All exemptions will be given in written by BMC, and BMC officers at the airport shall not give any exemptions.”

I was in a similar situation a year ago and after going through two trimesters, the summer placement process at IIM A and through interactions with people who have worked for 2–3 years before joining for MBA, I think I will be able to share some insight which I hope proves helpful.Myth 1: Workex increases your ability to grasp the course work as you can relate to scenarios in business and hence will prove helpful in case-based pedagogy.Truth: Workex doesn’t help you understand coursework any faster unless your work experience is very specific to that particular field only. For instance, if you are a finance graduate or a CA, finance courses will be a cakewalk for you, but you will struggle equally in a marketing course as a fresher or as someone who had worked in tech role previously.People with work-exp. might be able to make more sense out of human resource courses which a fresher might not be able to do, but those courses are just a small part of the curriculum.So, please don’t think there is anything you will gain by working 2–3 years before joining a B-School as far as learning from the classroom is concerned (or for that matter grades in exams).Myth 2: Work-exp will help me make an informed decision on how should I go about my career in the long run.Truth: The reality which I observed from my experience is that people are as clueless after 2–3 years of work-exp as you are now. No one knows what they want to do in the long run (5–10 years). Moreover, even if you are sure of a field for the long run, getting the desired company/shortlists doesn’t depend on your profile at all. It is simply based on your CV of what you did prior to joining the MBA college.Myth 3: Companies will prefer someone with work experience over a fresher.This is probably the most important question in your head right now. To clarify a few things here, there are a number of roles on campus across sectors and each have their own individual preference. I am writing this from summer internship point of view.To begin with, Marketing companies prefer a fresher (or someone with 1 yr. work exp.) over someone with higher work exp. given everything else remains same.Finance companies don’t have any such preference in terms of number of years worked. But someone who has worked in finance will have an upper edge over someone working in any other field. Also, great academics (preferably from electical engg./ computer science) is a great plus even if you are a fresher. They also give preference to someone from commerce or economics background, provided he/she has great academics.Consulting companies generally looks for ‘spikes’. If you have them even as a fresher, well and good. Most important criteria remains academic spikes for freshers, then other things on the CV. Frankly speaking, it is near impossible to get into top-tier consults being a fresher without stellar academics. Generally, they are quite open to people from all fields and their shortlists reflect diversity in terms of academic backgrounds. They prefer someone with 2 years work experience but nothing is set in stone.Another role which come on campus are general management roles. They don’t have any such preconceived notion of hiring only freshers or people with work experience. Their selection process involves SoP, HR questions and GD, interview. As long as you are good with them, you will sail through.Next are PE/VC roles. Supposedly, the most prestigious on campus (they are scarce and high paying). They won’t even look at freshers. Only work-exp. people with at least 2 years work exp. from top bank/consult or company are selected by them.Finally there are roles in IT companies or startups domain. They generally look for engineers and preferably someone with a coding/IIT background. This also makes sense as someone with basic coding skills or basic engg. aptitude will be better able to understand the technicalities in their business. That said, if you have a strong interest in them and your CV reflects that, you will be able to get through them.Should you undertake an internship in UG?Yes. Definitely. Go for anything and everything that increases your exposure to different aspects of a corporate/startup to understand how organizations actually work. You will learn a lot during those periods, no matter your field of internship. That said, I will suggest to prefer well established internship programs of various companies rather than just joining any internship for the sake of a certificate.Conclusion: The absence of work-exp. is not a disadvantage at all in terms of learning but as far as placements are concerned, it is advisable to get 2 years work experience before coming for MBA. You might get some clarity of what you want to do or at least what you definitely not want to do. Moreover, if the company where you get placed is a good brand name, you will have an edge in summer placements over your peers.

It’s important to clarify a few things before we get into the question. Think of your profile as a chronological order of events. The most recent developments hold priority over others. For instance, if you are currently working in a managerial or executive position then very little emphasis will be given to your Class XII or UG scores if you are applying for a career change. However, if you are looking for your first job then those scores become the deciding factor. The same holds true for MBA placements.M7 and some other top B-Schools look very closely at all your scores before accepting applications. However, most B-Schools tend to overlook them if the aspirant has a good overall profile. It doesn’t really matter if you have low scores. It matters what you did to compensate for that - have you been outstanding at your job? Have you been involved with any entrepreneurial activity? Have you been taking any courses or engaging in any social work in your free time?All this helps to bring clarity about who you are and what you are passionate about. That is why most B-Schools ask you to write SOP and Essays to give you a chance to highlight your strengths.The most important part here is to get accepted into the MBA program first. Once you are enrolled you need to network as much as possible, especially with the alumni and placement cells.
