I can speak to this as a public school teacher. I teach 5th grade in a neighborhood school that draws from a fairly high immigrant population. Our school has students from all over..South Asia, SE Asia, Mexico, Eastern Europe, Africa, etc.The great majority of the first and 2nd generation students are very appreciative of the education they are receiving, and in most cases work extremely hard. I often note to my colleagues that these students usually outwork the American-born students, and in some cases outperform them after 3–6 years of being exposed to English on a regular basis. They are eager to learn and their parents are eager for them to do well in school.Americans can take all that we are blessed with for granted. I once had a girl new to the US tell me how she was amazed that we could actually drink water right from the tap. And a boy from Africa loved that we had plenty of school supplies, and that breakfast and lunch at school helped him learn.Just based on the enthusiasm, hard work, and positive outlook from my many students over the past 20+ years, I can’t imagine that immigration is anything BUT a net positive for America.

In other countries, the non-rich recognize this and use the force of numbers to get nice things for themselves and their children.But the rich of America have found the magic loophole that keeps the non-rich of America from demanding those same things. And that loophole is the same one LBJ described: always keep the focus on ‘'the other,’ and what he/she is getting that you think they don't deserve, so you never realize you have more in common with that other than you do with the rich people. So you never join with them to demand more.It works so well. From 1865-1950, black and white people in former slave states earned less, died earlier, committed more violent crimes and suffered from more preventable diseases linked to poor sanitation such as hookworm and pellagra, than their counterparts in the North and West. For both blacks and whites, literacy rates were lower and infant mortality was higher in the South than elsewhere. I have lived in several countries including USA, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Korea etc. and that’s what prompted me to answer this question so unless you have lived in both countries you may not be able to relate to this answer.
