The day after I was filling out a name change form, and for the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I REALISED THERE WERE TWO WAYS TO SPELL ELIZABETH (Elisabeth). And I DIDN'T KNOW WHICH I'D PICKED. So until I could get home and look at the name change court order, I DIDN'T KNOW HOW MY LEGAL NAME WAS SPELLED!

It’s quite a simple process and I will explain it with regards to my experience with HSR Layout BESCOM office.There are few myths related to the transfer process such as - you might need an agent to do it for you, you might have to visit the office multiple times, you might have to pay bribe, etc.Let me tell you that the above mentioned myths are not at all true. Steps are as follows:Register on bescom site and check for any pending dues or unpaid bills. Pay the bill and take a print-out of the paid receipt [1] .Pay the property tax for the current year (or any other pending dues) on the BBMP online Property Tax System[2] . In case property tax is already paid, you can download the receipt from here[3].Take a photo copy of your Sale Deed.Take photo copy of the government ID proof and carry the original as well to the BESCOM office.Get the photocopy of the sale deed, property tax receipt and ID proof notarized. I visited Koramangala BDA complex and I was charged 7 Rs per page for notary.Take the print out of the NOC page (page 8, Form IV) of the BESCOM Name change form [4] and take signature of the previous owner.Visit BESCOM office and ask for Name change form. Though, name change form, Indemnity Bond and Power supply agreement are available online, they insist on filling the form available at their office.Visit the counter for ‘Document Check’. Document list - 1. Name change form, 2. Notarized Sale Deed, 3. Notarized Property Tax receipt, 4. Notarized ID proofs and 5. Duly filled NOC form. Here, the officer will check if the above documents are present and notarized.Visit the counter for ‘Document Verification’. Here, the officer will check if the Name Change form and NOC form are filled correctly.Visit the counter for ‘No dues’. Here, the officer will check if all the bills/dues are cleared. If not, you would be asked to visit the cash counter and pay the same. NOTE - Cash counter dont accept debit card, upi, etc. based payment. Hence carry some cash.Visit the final counter for ‘Name Change Registration’. Here, the officer will scan the above documents, upload them on the online portal and generate the payment invoice. Visit the cash counter again to make the payment and get the receipt back to ‘Name Change Registration’ counter.After payment, the officer will ask you to fill Indemnity Bond and Power Supply Agreement. Note - Both these forms requires a witness to sign. (You can request somebody in the office to sign).After this, the officer will give you a cardboard file. All the above forms, documents and receipts need to filed in this. Submit this file back to the officer.After submitting the file, the officer will give you an acknowledgement receipt.The new name would reflect on the electricity bill immediately in the next bill cycle.Please Note:If the property is registered on multiple people in the sale deed. Then all those people need to be present in the BESCOM office and their names should be written on all the BESCOM forms. In case they are not available or you want the electricity bill to have just one name then you would need to carry an authorization letter from the co-owners.Nobody asked for any bribe and all the BESCOM officers involved were very warm, helpful and welcoming.Total charges - Rs 618 + Notary charges.Total time - 1 hr.I request you to spread this procedure amongst your friends or family circles.Plus, I have written a similar answer for bribe-free Khata transfer.
