PDF Editor FAQ

I want to travel the world and do humanitarian work, how can I do this?

Before you do this, ask yourself the following questions:What are my motivations for doing this? What are my skills, and how can they help someone OR help an organization help someone else?Is traveling necessary to do humanitarian work? Will I be able to make a higher impact, given my skills and profile, being abroad? After considering the above and deciding it’s still the right option for you, there are quite a few platforms out there, depending on your interests and budget. They range from general, unskilled and relatively cheap opportunities to expensive, structured volunteer programmes which provide you with pre-trip training and post-trip evaluations.Workaway/WWOOF/HelpXThese are online platforms on which hosts looking for volunteers can post about their work. Potential volunteers pay a small membership fee to access the listed opportunities, and work in exchange for (usually) free accommodation and food, depending on the country you are volunteering in and the type of entity you are volunteering for. I found that established NGOs often charge a small fee (US5/day) for volunteering as compared to individual enterprises/projects who often host for free in exchange for work.Do research on your host before agreeing to go. These are open platforms with less regulations on both sides.2. Research and contact NGOs directlyDepending on your field of interest, look up on NGOs doing what you’re interested in. Many organizations post about their volunteering opportunities on the website/FB. Though in my personal experience, the volunteer usually needs to take care of their own living expenses while they are there.3. 3rd-party matching programmesThese structured programmes can be more rewarding (and safer) than the above 2, assuming the 3rd-party organization is reliable. They can also be a lot more expensive. Such programmes usually attract more professional volunteers with more working experience and skills to offer (and also more money to spare). There are many, many organizations out there claiming they will offer you the BEST, MOST UNIQUE, REWARDING volunteer experience. There are also many valid controversies surrounding voluntourism. It’s too complicated to dissect all these in a supposed-to-be-short Quora answer - all I’d advise you is while you possess a good heart, be mindful of the volunteer organization you choose to work with and the volunteer activities you carry out with them.Good luck.

Does Trump's "rake the forests" comment finally convince everyone that he is mentally challenged?

No, and his mental condition should not be determined by the comment. Trump’s mental and emotional status has been discussed by experts of all kinds. It sounds as though a majority have settled on malignant narcissism for the best guess at a diagnosis. In this case, his gaffe isn’t an indication of mental stability. Instead, it is a prime example of the disconnect between urban and rural understanding of the world and the environment.I’ll give another example: My education, profession, and domestic life has been focused on Animal Agriculture. Specifically cattle and sheep. I don’t own any of my own livestock, and for the last 10 years have not been actively involved in livestock production. However, based on my life experience, education and reading, when someone makes comments about an aspect of agriculture that has something to do with livestock production (hay and grain production, livestock markets, health, etc.), I have the background knowledge and experience to understand and use what I have heard. My background also helps me understand where I need to learn more before I speak. One of my favorite examples of NOT having the appropriate experience and making wide-spread comments has been a family joke for some time. Years ago, an aunt and uncle came to the ranch where we lived and worked. They parked their camper in the yard and stayed for a few lovely days. I showed them around, talked about what was happening right then and what happened at other times in the year. I explained that we used artificial insemination to make improvements in the genetic makeup of the herd, and that detecting when a cow is ready to breed - that is, when she is in heat - can be a challenge and requires careful observation. When Uncle wrote his usual post-trip letter to everyone, he described the challenge of taking the temperatures of so many cows! I had assumed that they understood ‘being in heat’ meant ‘in the appropriate point in the estrus cycle for successful breeding’. I love the image of us running around a pasture full of cows with a thermometer!Getting back to Trump and his raking story, I think it’s hilarious, but that’s because I have significant background experience raking leaves from the yard, raking hay, raking (harrowing) pastures in the spring raking manure and straw from stalls, and more. And I have extensive experience evaluating the size and difficulty of the area to be raked, primarily because I know how hard raking can get.Remember, Trump is a product of a completely suburban upbringing, and a privileged one at that. I doubt he’s ever held a rake and I don’t know that he’s ever been in a forest. He probably has no idea how ridiculous it sounds to suggest raking a forest. (His recent comments on the fires in California demonstrate a deep chasm of misunderstanding anything relating to climate, land management… but that’s another subject.)There are endless examples of decision makers who have inadequate practical experience for their positions. With knowledgeable support staff, damage can be avoided. However, the person in charge has to know what he/she DOESN”T know, and be willing to admit it. DJT has given ample evidence attesting to the fact that he feels competent in all areas, has not need and no interest in learning otherwise. I don’t think that alone demonstrates mental deficiency. My guess is that it’s a symptom or trait of a larger, more complex condition.

Is it possible to have a truck driving career with a psychotic disorder you know maintain one and maybe retire from it?

From the FMCSA's FAQ page[1][1][1][1] :The truck driver must be medically qualified to not only drive the vehicle safely, but also to do pre and post trip safety inspections, secure the load and make sure it has not shifted. Bus drivers have different demands.By regulation, Specific Medically Disqualifying Conditions Found Under 49 CFR 391.41 [2][2][2][2] are Hearing Loss, Vision Loss, Epilepsy and Insulin Use.Drivers who require a Diabetes or Vision exemption to safely drive a CMV in addition to those pre-printed on the certification form are disqualified until they receive such an exemption. So, no psychiatric disorders are automatically disqualifying. Good news. However, the potentially bad news is twofold: first off, you'll have to convince the DOT medical examiner performing your evaluation that you can safely operate a truck. This will most likely involve the ME calling your psychiatrist and having a nice long chat. If your psychiatrist is convinced that your condition is well under control, and able to convince the ME of this, you should be good to go. The second part is regarding your medication(s): you, your psychiatrist, and your ME all need to know with absolute certainty that the meds you're on won't themselves impair your ability to drive safely. Benzodiazapines? No flipping way. Some antipsychotics are okay (aripiprazole among them), others aren't. If it's got a warning about operating heavy machinery on the label you can basically fugeddaboutit. You might need to change up your meds.If I were in your position I'd print out a copy of the FMCSA Medical Examiner's Handbook[3][3][3][3] , thoroughly read and understand it, and then bring it to your psychiatrist. Explain that you want to be a trucker and the potential pitfalls you've identified. Discuss possibly changing your meds, getting a happy smiley recommendation, and generally laying the groundwork. Then-BEFORE you even think about starting CDL school-go get a DOT medical card. Once you have that (they're good for two years most of the time, one year if you have some issues, 90 days very rarely) you should be good to go. However be prepared to repeat that process several times as generally your employer will want you to have a new physical done by their doctor; you'll probably have to explain everything yet again every few years thereafter. But yes, it absolutely is doable.Footnotes[1] What medical conditions disqualify a commercial bus or truck driver?[1] What medical conditions disqualify a commercial bus or truck driver?[1] What medical conditions disqualify a commercial bus or truck driver?[1] What medical conditions disqualify a commercial bus or truck driver?[2] Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR)[2] Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR)[2] Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR)[2] Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR)[3] FMCSA Medical Examiner Handbook[3] FMCSA Medical Examiner Handbook[3] FMCSA Medical Examiner Handbook[3] FMCSA Medical Examiner Handbook
