Did the Siege of Jerusalem 1187 A.D. play out any way similar to the portrayal by the Kingdom of Heaven?

Yes and no. Some key aspects of the siege as depicted in “The Kingdom of Heaven” do have a historical basis; many do not. Let me try to sort them out.Balian d’Ibelin is depicted refusing to take part in the Battle of Hattin and remains behind in Jerusalem: FALSEFar from refusing to take part in the campaign to Hattin, Balian d’Ibelin mustered with his feudal host and commanded the rear-guard. He contributed the third largest contingent of troops to the feudal army after the Militant Orders and the count of Tripoli because at this time he commanded not only the 10 knights of Ibelin but the 40 knights of Ramla and Mirabell (as guardian of his nephew Thomas) and the 80 knights of Nablus, who were vassals of his wife, Maria Comnena, the Dowager Queen of Jerusalem — that is 130 knights or more than twice as many as the next most important barons Sidon, which owed 100 knights, and Oultrejordain (Reynald de Chatillon) that owed 60 knights.Furthermore, Ibelin was one of only four barons to escape the battlefield alive and a free man, probably by leading a breakout to the rear, which enabled not only the knights of his division but some 3,000 infantry to extricate themselves from the trap as well. His reputation was intact as a result.Queen Sibylla is present in Jerusalem during the siege: FALSEQueen Sibylla was so desperately in love with Guy de Lusignan that, although she was the reigning queen, she begged Saladin for permission to join her husband in captivity. I’ve read conflicting reports on whether this was granted or not, but she was definitively NOT in Jerusalem during the siege. For more on Sibylla’s relationship with Guy see: SibyllaBalian d’Ibelin is shown conducting a mass knighting: PARTLY TRUEAfter agreeing to remain in Jerusalem to organize the defense, Ibelin discovered that he was one of only two knights in the city. He therefore knighted 80 youths “of good birth.” This is indeed a mass knighting — but hardly of the entire male population, or even all fighting men regardless of birth. The youth knighted were most probably the teenage sons and brothers of knights and lords who had been killed or captured at Hattin rather than men of low birth. The walls of Jerusalem are breached before the surrender negotiations: TRUEAfter five days of assaulting from the northwest, Saladin withdrew and redeployed his army on the northeast salient — the same part of the wall that the crusaders had taken in 1099. He used sappers to undermine the walls, calling a segment roughly 40 meters long to collapse on the night of Sept. 29, 1187.Saladin is shown requesting negotiations: FALSEIt was Ibelin who requested negotiations. Dramatically, while he was talking to the Sultan, Saracen banners went up on the wall, and Saladin remarked dryly that one did not negotiate for something one already held. Just then the banners were thrown down again, and the negotiations continued.Balian threatened to destroy the sacred sites in the city, slaughter all Muslim prisoners, the women and children, and then come out to die a martyr’s death: TRUE.According to the Arab chronicler Imad ad-Din, Ibelin said: “We shall burn the houses and pull down the Dome, and leave you the shame of reducing us to slavery. We shall tear up the Rocke and leave you the grief of losing it; we shall kill every Muslim prisoner in our hands….”Ibn al-Athir (a more reliable Arab historian and eye-witness) puts the following words in Ibelin’s mouth: “…if we see that death is inevitable, then by God we shall kill our children and our wives, burn our possessions, so as not to leave you with a dinar or a drachma or a single man or woman to enslave. When this is done, we shall pull down the Sanctuary of the Rock and the Masjid al-Aqsa and the other sacred places, slaughtering the Muslim prisoners we hold — 5,000 of them — killing every horse and animal we possess. Then we shall come out and fight you like men fighting for their lives, when each man before he falls dead, kills his equals; we shall die with honor, or win a noble victory.”The citizens of Jerusalem are allowed to walk away free men and women: UP TO A POINT….After consulting with this emirs, Saladin agreed to spare the lives of the Christians in Jerusalem, but only on the condition that they bought their freedom. After much haggling, it was agreed that each man would have to pay 10 dinars, each woman 5 and each child 2. Those that could not pay this ransom would become the property of the Sultan, slaves.Ibelin protested that the city was full of refugees, who had already lost everything. According to the Old French Continuation of William of Tyre, he argued “In a city such as this there are only a few people apart from the burgesses who could manage [the ransom], and for every man who can pay the ransom there are a hundred who could not redeem themselves even for two bezants. The city is full of ordinary people who have come from the surrounding area for protection.” (p.60) After considerable haggling, the Sultan agreed to a lump-sum payment of 30,000 bezants for (varying by source) between 7, 000 and 18,000 Christian paupers. These 30,000 bezants were paid by the Hospital with the money deposited by King Henry II of England, but even so when the 40 days granted the Christians to raise their ransoms were up, some 15,000 Christians were unable to pay and condemned to slavery. Ibelin, appalled, offered to stand surety for them while the ransom was raised, but Saladin refused, although he did “give” 1,000 slaves to his brother and 500 each to Balian and the Patriarch of Jerusalem so that 2,000 souls were freed at the last minute.Imad ad-Din, one of Salah ad-Din's intimates (his secretary and chancellor to be precise), describes vividly what happened to those who could not pay their ransom.Under the treaty, at the end of forty days whoever was unable to pay what he owed or refused to pay it was to become our slave by right and come into our possession....There were more than 100,000 persons in the city, men, women and children. The gates were closed upon them all, and representatives appointed to make a census and demand the sum due. ... About 15,000 were unable to pay the tax, and slavery was their lot; there were about 7,000 men who had to accustom themselves to an unaccustomed humiliation, and whom slavery slip up and dispersed as their buyers scattered through the hills and valleys. Women and children together came to 8,000 and were quickly divided up among us, bringing a smile to Muslim faces at their lamentations. How many well-guarded women were profaned, how many queens were ruled, and nubile girls married, and noble women given away, and miserly women forced to yield themselves, and women who had been kept hidden stripped of their modesty, and serious women made ridiculous, and women kept in private now set in public, and free women occupied, and precious ones used for hard work and pretty things put to the test, and virgins dishonored and proud women deflowered, and lovely women's red lips kissed and dark women prostrated, and untamed ones tamed, and happy ones made to weep! How many noblemen took them as concubines, how many ardent men blazed for one of them, and celibates were satisfied by them, and thirsty men sated by them, and turbulent men able to give vent to their passion. How many lovely women were the exclusive property of one man, how many great ladies were sold at low prices, and close ones set at a distance, and lofty ones abase, and savage ones captured, and those accustomed to thrones dragged down!Balian d’Ibelin is shown departing Jerusalem to “return” to France: FALSEBalian d’Ibelin was the legitimate son of the First Baron of Ibelin. He was born in the Holy Land. After the surrender of Jerusalem, he escorted one of the three columns of refugees to Tyre, and thereafter took part in the struggle to regain what had been lost. Eventually, Richard the Lionheart appointed him his primary envoy to Saladin, and he negotiated the Truce of Ramla that ended the Third Crusade. (For more see: Diplomacy of the Third Crusade)Ibelin’s role in the period following the fall of Jerusalem to the end of the Third Crusade is also the subject of my novel “Envoy of Jerusalem.” This book was the winner of seven literary awards including “Best Biography 2017” from Book Excellence Awards and “Best Christian Historical Fiction” from Readers Favorites. In addition, here are some true facts that Hollywood ignoredBalian d’Ibelin, having taken part in the Battle of Hattin and reached the safety of Tyre, returned to Jerusalem on a safe-conduct from Saladin to remove his wife (the Dowager Queen of Jerusalem Maria Comnena) and his four young children. He swore to enter the city unarmed and remain only a single night. However, the refugees and remaining citizens begged him to remain and take command of the defense and the Patriarch absolved him of his oath. He remained — at the time believing he thereby condemned his wife and children to endure what promised to be a hopeless siege. When Ibelin sent word to Saladin of his intention to stay in Jerusalem, Saladin — in a truly chivalrous gesture — sent his own Mamluks to escort Balian’s family to safety. (For more on this see: The Generosity of a Sultan )Ibelin led a sortie out of Jerusalem shortly before the siege began that clashed with Saracen reconnaissance; an important emir was killed in this clash.Ibelin led several sorties out of Jerusalem during the siege, at one point driving the Saracens back to their camp.Balian d’Ibelin led a final sortie on the night after the walls had been mined and brought to collapse; it was nipped in the bud and driven back with heavy Christian losses. The Knights Hospitaller donated the lump-sum of 30,000 bezants for the paupers of Jerusalem. When Balian d’Ibelin saw the 15,000 Christians being led off into slavery, Balian offered his own person as surety for raising a ransom for these poor souls, but was turned down by Saladin.

To what extent does science believe in the soul and God?

Since the soul and God are supernatural, their existence are not within the purview of science which covers only natural phenomena. The symptoms of them when manifest through matter can be examined and theorized over, but the source will always remain a mystery.Symptoms of the soul are: life, consciousness, sentience, desire, emotion, etc and while these are researched in science, the source of them slips through even the most gifted scientists.Similarly natural laws, which give the order and control in the universe are evidence of a supreme controller - God, and they can be researched threadbare, but the source of them will remain forever beyond the discerning inspection of science.Individual scientists can believe in the existence of both the soul and God, but for them to be entered into the annals of scientific data they have to be empirically observed and measured by natural means, which is a problem because they are not products of nature. They are a different substance to matter. So science is stuck with only the symptoms and the futile search of a natural source for them.Life is obviously observable, and control and design in the universe is obviously evident, but whatever a scientist personally believes, the restrictions of science prohibit the existence of the supernatural. The efforts of science are to explain everything we can observe by natural causes however problematical or silly it sounds. As such science currently rejects God and the soul as being unnecessary for explaining life and the universe. There are some murmurings against this from scientists, which may lead ‘science’ to reconsider what is permissible in the field of science. Added to that, saying “We don’t know, and can’t figure it out,” over and over is embarrassing if you are the ones people turn to for answers. Honesty is nice, but knowledge is better.Reincarnation may well be researched more in the future because there are many cases of children recalling their previous life, and it won’t automatically give Christianity a foot in the door since reincarnation is absent in mainstream Christianity. Seems like a fairly ‘safe’ place to start. No need for God or Jesus, but an understanding we are not our bodies. That’s right where Bhagavad Gita starts. As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change. Bg 2.13
