PDF Editor FAQ

Do students at MIT pay for accommodation?

I would like to add to all the already lovely, comprehensive existing answers, that if you qualify for financial aid and it covers your housing, MIT Student Financial Services assumes that you’ll get Tier 1 housing. Tier 1 is the most expensive housing rate, which you can look up here: Undergraduate Housing RatesI looked at the example amounts/numbers that SFS considers from this site: Financial Aid at MIT Based on that, they actually assume you would get a double in a Tier 1 dorm for 2018–2019 rates.I don’t qualify for financial aid (womp womp) so I don’t know the nitty gritty details, but this is what I just heard from talking to my fellow MIT students. I’m sure you can ask for a more detailed account in a different question. :)

What were your SAT scores and GPA? What colleges accepted you?

The college application process was a long long roller coaster of emotions.I am a half-Greek, half-American student residing in Athens, Greece, interested in studying politics and international relations.I took the ACT in December of 2017 and got a composite score of 35, with a 35 in English, Reading, and Science, and a 34 in Math.I took 3 SAT Subject Tests: Math 2 (800), Physics (770), World History (700)I am enrolled in the IB diploma program, with my courses being Math, Physics, Econ at HL, and Global Politics, English A, Modern Greek A at SL.I had a predicted grade of 45/45 (42 points from my courses+ 3 points for Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay), and the first semester of my senior year I had a 42/42 (during term grades, Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay are not accounted for). My final junior year grade point was a 40/42, with a 6 in English A and Modern Greek A.Now, where did I apply?Early RoundREA Yale: After attending the Yale Young Global Scholars program in the summer of 2018, I fell in love with the school. The campus was stunning, the relationship between student and faculty was great, and I truly felt at home.Decision: DeferredRegular RoundThe period between my Yale deferral and New Year’s day was probably the most stressful time of my life. So many essays, so much thinking… God knows how I survived.Let us get to it!I applied to 11 schools overall (including Yale).MIT: RejectedAlthough I was kind of interested in the school because my father had gone there, I really was not a fit for it due to my profile being much more social science-oriented.U Chicago: WaitlistedI was super excited about U Chicago since I am from Chicago and they have a great political science department. Waitlist is definitely not bad though.Northwestern: AcceptedMy first acceptance! They have a really interesting option to major in political science and do an adjunct major in International Relations. Also, the fact that it is in Chicago, my hometown, where most of my American relatives are, is great.Tufts: Withdrew ApplicationSince I knew I preferred Northwestern from Tufts, I decided to withdraw my app. I knew a lot of students in my school were interested in Tufts (hopefully it helped them get in!).Dartmouth: RejectedI was not that big of a fan of the school, so I was not too dissapointed. I did like the fact they are next to a bunch of ski resorts though!UPenn: RejectedI really liked UPenn when I visited back in 2015, and they have a tradition in IR with their well-known International Relations Association and great MUN conferences. I was bummed about this one.Columbia: WaitlistedBesides the school being amazing in politics, I had a personal attachment to the school because my grandfather Alfred (yes, I am his namesake) attended Columbia Law. My grandfather was a true inspiration for me because of his out-of-this-world work ethic and his witty and wise mind. On the other hand, getting waitlisted by a school like Columbia is definitely no walk in the park, so I am not complaining.Harvard, Princeton: RejectedThese two were long shots to say the least, but still had to go for them because of their excellence in my field of interest (politics/IR).Yale: RejectedThis one hurt. It was the final one to open on Ivy Day. I had sent a well-thought-out mailed letter of continued interest to the Dean of Admissions(for any juniors reading, do this if you get deferred, it is a great move. Send it by mail to his PO Box). Anyways, I learn from my failures, keep my head up and am excited for what is to come for the future.Georgetown-School of Foreign Service (SFS): AcceptedIt was the last one to come in. I was ecstatic about SFS because it is known to have the most prominent politicians, presidents, ministers, and ambassadors as part of its alumni. It is perfect for what I am interested in.Enrollment Decision: SFS-GeorgetownAdvice for juniors:START EARLY. Especially in the regular application round, a lot of Early Action/Early Decision students tend to wait until the decisions of their EA/ED come out (like I did). BIG BIG MISTAKE! Get to work on RD applications before December comes around.Push through junior year and try your absolute best with your final exams (AP exams particularly, which are coming up!). I know you are probably exhausted from the hard work you put in junior year (I was too), but you have to understand that junior year grades, especially in college prep courses (AP) are extremely important for your application (especially your EA/ED).Best of luck. Do not hesitate to hit me up with any questions with the application process.Cheers!
