Where is the temple of Jerusalem that Solomon, according to the Bible, had built with stones three times larger than those of the Pantheon and of which nothing, not even a fragment, has come to us?

Where is the temple of Jerusalem that Solomon, according to the Bible, had built with stones three times larger than those of the Pantheon and of which nothing, not even a fragment, has come to us?Although no fragments of the fabled biblical temple have been unearthed, archaeologists have discovered a temple which could be the closest known parallel to the Temple of King Solomon, the ‘Ain Dara temple in Northern Syria, one of the most important monuments built in Syria by the Syro-Hittites or Neo-Hittites. Nearly every aspect of the ’Ain Dara temple—its age, its size, its plan, its decoration—parallels the vivid description of the Temple of King Solomon in the Bible. According to the excavator Ali Abu Assaf, it was in existence from 1300 BC until 740 BC and remained "basically the same" during the period of the Solomonic Temple's construction (1000–900 BC) as it had been before, so that it predates the Solomon Temple. Archaeologist John Monson identified more than 30 architectural and decorative elements shared by the ’Ain Dara structure and the Jerusalem Temple described in the Hebrew scriptures. The similarities between the ’Ain Dara temple and the temple described in the Bible are striking. Both buildings were erected on huge artificial platforms built on the highest point in their respective cities. The buildings likewise have similar tripartite plans: an entry porch supported by two columns, a main sanctuary hall (the hall of the ’Ain Dara temple is divided between an antechamber and a main chamber) and then, behind a partition, an elevated shrine, or Holy of Holies. They were also both flanked on three of their sides by a series of multistoried rooms and chambers that served various functions.Even the decorative schemes of ’Ain Dara temple and the temple described in the Bible are similar: Nearly every surface, both interior and exterior, of the ’Ain Dara temple was carved with lions, mythical animals (cherubim and sphinxes), and floral and geometric patterns, the same imagery that, according to 1 Kings 6:29, adorned the Temple of King Solomon. The plan, size, date and architectural details fit squarely into the tradition of sacred architecture from north Syria (and probably Phoenicia) from the tenth to eighth centuries BC.Gigantic footprints belonging to the resident deity were carved at the temple’s entrance. Photo: A.M. Appa:Certain features of the ’Ain Dara temple also provide dramatic insight into ancient Near Eastern conceptions of gods and the temples in which they were thought to reside. Carved side-by-side in the threshold of the ’Ain Dara temple are two gigantic footprints. As one enters the antechamber of the sanctuary, there is another carving of a right foot, followed 30 feet away (at the threshold between the antechamber and the main chamber) by a carving of a left foot. The footprints, each of which measures 3 feet in length, were intended to show the presence (and enormity) of the resident deity as he or she entered the temple and approached his or her throne in the Holy of Holies. Indeed, the 30-foot stride between the oversize footprints indicates a god who would have stood 65 feet tall! In Solomon’s Temple, the presence of a massive throne formed by the wings of two giant cherubim with 17-foot wingspans (1 Kings 6:23–26) may indicate that some Israelites envisaged their God, Yahweh, in a similar manner. After a horrific Turkish airstrike which hit the ‘Ain Dara temple, the ancient site is little more than a pile of rubble. The attack was directed on the Kurdish-held area south of the city of Afrin sometime between 20 January and 22 January 2018.Current Status of the Tell Ain Dara Temple. By Michael D. Danti, Darren P. Ashby, Marina Gabriel, and Susan Penacho:Yahweh was not the only deity honoured in the early days of the Temple. During the United Monarchy, the Temple was dedicated to Yahweh, the God of Israel. From the reign of King Manasseh until King Josiah Baal and "host of heaven" were also worshipped. Until the reforms of King Josiah, there was also a statue for the goddess Asherah (2 Kings 23:5) and priestesses wove ritual textiles for her. (2 Kings 23:7). Next to the temple was a house for the temple prostitutes (2 Kings 23:7) who performed sacred prostitution at the temple. It is unclear whether the prostitutes included both male and female or just male prostitutes, but those were the jolly, sexy practices of that time. One challenge to finding any fragments of the temple is that the exact location of the Temple is unknown: it is believed to have been situated upon the hill which forms the site of the 1st century Second Temple and present-day Temple Mount, where the Dome of the Rock is situated. An ivory pomegranate which mentions priests in the house "of ---h" and an inscription recording the Temple's restoration under Jehoash have both appeared on the antiquities market, but their authenticity has been challenged, and they are subjects of controversy. There is no archaeological evidence for the existence of Solomon’s temple, and the building is not mentioned in surviving extra-biblical accounts.Ain Dara (archaeological site) - WikipediaIconic Ancient Temple Is Latest Victim in Civil WarIvory Pomegranate Revisited: A Relic from Solomon’s Temple? - Biblical Archaeology SocietyKing, Philip J.; Stager, Lawrence E. Have you experienced generation gap?

Oh, more times than I can count. And I LOVE it!Snippets of mundane conversations between my parents and me:Scenario 1:My mum once asked me to go buy a silicone spatula to ease her baking efforts. So I go to a kitchen appliance store and send her a picture of a couple of options on WhatsApp. I call her once the photos have been sent.Me: Ma, please check your WhatsApp, I’ve sent you pictures of options they have here. Please let me know which one you want me to buy.Mum: Ok, let me check and call you right back, kanna (my dear).Me: *thinking* Why can she not do it when I’m on the line (I don’t need to elaborate on this for all millennials out there, I hope)? She calls me back.Me: Amma, you NEED to learn to open WhatsApp WHILE I’m on the line! When will you start doing that?Mum: (without protesting) You’re there to teach me all this, right? You teach me how to use technology so well.Me: All right, I’ll come home and show you.We finalise on a common favourite. Legend has it, I’m still demonstrating the process to her. Oh well…Scenario 2:I’ve sent and received tons of mails from my dad. When I send him a low priority mail, he ignores it for the time being and snap, within days, his inbox is full. And there he is, on day 21, trying to retrieve the mail I sent him.Dad: Did you send me that XYZ PDF that I’d asked? I can’t seem to find it. Please resend it.Me: Appa, it should be in your inbox. I sent it the moment you asked for it. But all right, I’ll resend it. (internal monologue) I should teach him to search his mails, how will he survive on that heap otherwise?!Email resent and, subsequently, dealt with.Scenario 3:My sister and I would visit our grandparents when we younger and they would invariably ask us to sing something for them (for the uninitiated, in Tamil brahmin households, girls are sent to Carnatic classical music classes early in their lives and singing in front of relatives, perspective marriage alliances, etc. is a norm). We would kick about, complain to our mum, express directly that we’d rather watch the television than sing. We would, eventually, adhere to their request when our dad will nudge us. The reason why my sister and I are as in-sync with our musical roots today is because of minor encouragements such as these. We didn’t value them then.I’ll add more to this list as and when memory strikes. But, for now, this should do. Generation gap exists. Their fangs will be embedded in our society until the day humans are alive. But what can we do about it? What can we do without it? Life will become banal and uninspiring if not for these contrasting ideas that culminate in productive arguments. Some may call it old-fashioned for a small percentage of my generation (millennials) to acquiesce in our parents’ decisions for us, but the kind of trust and bond such families share is not replicable by a large percentage of millennial parents. Guess generation gap isn’t a curse, after all?

What are some English words or phrases, colloquial or not, which are overused or misused in India?

It's a human tendency to imitate the activity of a person who is next to us. So, this probably leads to spread of some specific words to a greater extent. Not to surprise, profanities top the list. Different regions have their own vernacular language (or words). Colloquials are another such group of words. Many colloquials used for a product are probably the name of the Company that was pioneer in bringing that product into the market.Let's begin with the colloquial words used in India (I apologise if the following words are mentioned in previous answers).Xerox: The name of the Company that manufactures photo copying machines. The technical term should be photocopy. We can see boards highlighting Xerox at many places. Though this places have the Machines manufactured by Canon, the word Xerox is preferred.Cadbury: Cadbury is the name of the Company that manufactures Chocolates of various types. Though most of us use the term to denote any chocolate that is long in length. The technical term can be Chocolate bar.Dolby: We know Dolby manufactures Audio Systems for various purposes and of various types but in India any audio system that generates high Decibel sound (mostly used during Festivals or to do some sort of show off) is called as Dolby.JCB: JCB stands for Joseph Cyril Bamford (the name of the person) and JCB Excavators Limited - the company that manufactures Excavation Machines. Though most of us denote any such Excavation Machine manufactured by JCB or Hitachi or Caterpillar or any other Company as JCB. These Machines have their respective technical names.Maggi: Maggi is a Company (under Nestlé) that manufactures Noodles, Tomato Ketchup, Spices, etc. But most of us mostly use the term Maggi to mention Noodles.Sunmica: Sunmica is the name of the Company who was one of the pioneers in manufacturing laminates in India. Back in 20th century there were two Companies - Formica and Sunmica that manufactured laminates but after few years Formica left India and Sunmica stayed and this became the face for laminates.Jeep: Jeep is the name of the Company who probably was one of the pioneers in manufacturing SUVs. Though most of us use the word to refer many of the SUVs manufactured by Mahindra or Force.Volvo: Similar to Jeep, Volvo was probably the pioneer in manufacturing Luxury Buses. So, most of the times many people use the term Volvo to denote a Luxury Bus irrespective of whether it is manufactured by Scania or Volvo or any other Company.Light: Probably it's a widely used word for Electricity. It's true that the primary objective of electricity when it was in its infancy was to provide light but it seems most of us held on to its then objective and started using the word Light. The word even shows its presence in Government Offices (In list of Required Documents for a particular purpose). Thanks to my 9th Standard Science Teacher who helped me correct this. I never thought of it before. The following words may not be just limited to India.Effect of RAS Syndrome:RAS syndrome (short for "redundant acronym syndrome syndrome") refers to the use of one or more of the words that make up an acronym in conjunction with the abbreviated form, thus in effect repeating one or more words.Examples in day to day life are:PIN Number (Personal Identification Number Number)ATM Machine (Automated/Automatic Teller Machine Machine)LCD Display (Liquid Crystal Display Display)PDF Format (Portable Document Format Format)Source: WikipediaThese are few vernacular of Pune:ABC Chowk: Appa Balwant Chowk ChowkFC College: Fergusson College CollegeThere are few related to CoEP:CoEP Pune: College of Engineering, Pune PuneAC Complex: Academic Complex ComplexSomething related to Quora:Use of A2A:Previously Quora allowed Users to Ask other Quora users to Answer their question. So, the Answer would contain the A2A, mostly along with a greeting to Thank the Asker. But a month back (probably in March 2016) Quora changed the term Ask to Request. So, technically it will be Requested to Answer (R2A). But many people continue to use the term A2A in their Answer.I will try to add other such words if I come across them. Thanks to Rashmi Gadkari for suggesting about RAS Syndrome words used in Pune.Edits:Included RAS Syndrome words.A2A.RAS Syndrome words used in Pune and CoEP.Included full forms of RAS Syndrome words.
