Let me take you through all the cover designs for my book which ultimately didn’t see the light. I have also described the entire process of how I got to the final cover for Redemption of a Son.Cover #1The first cover which I came up with was never destined to be the last cover. I had myself created a naive cover using PowerPoint. That one was meant only to enthuse me and make me augment my efforts towards completing the book at the earliest. Ergo, there was nothing too sacred about it. It was always meant to be a temporary thing.The hunt for a serious cover design only once I was done with the editing phase. Best friend Yukti had introduced me to her friend, Ened who is a graphic designer based in Delhi. Very benignly, he offered to help me out for no charge. It was a big gesture on his part. I was no doubt humbled.He wanted to read the book first, so he could get a stronger insight about what his cover would represent. So, I sent him a PDF copy of my work which he read over the next 3 days. Once he was done, he came up with the thought that using one my father's and my picture on the book would have been a great idea. And, working in that direction, he designed the following cover, applying various digital painting skills at his disposal.Cover #2However, despite it being a great piece of art, it just didn't connect with me. I didn’t find it reflective of my overall book’s essence. What further gave me a reason to say no to that cover was a friend's comment on it. She said, "if you are going to use your father's and your picture on the cover, then it would straight away give the impression that the book is just a personal memoir. And many buyers won't want to read the book then." I was convinced. She was right. So, that was it.But, now I had to say no to him. That wasn't easy at all. I mean, its not easy for me to refuse people's work if they have worked hard on it, even if I don't find it to be suiting my taste. After all, he had spent over two days creating that digital painting of us father and son. Finally, mustering some courage in my guts, I came up front with Ened about things. Suppressing my anxiety, I told him that I needed someone with whom I could sit in person with while s/he would be designing the cover.And, that was how my junior from college, Srajan Chansoriya came into play. A polite, humble and devoted guy with a knack for designing skills, he went on to design a number of designs for my book after taking into my account my views about what I wanted the cover to be like. My answer was basically a confused mix of keywords like, minimal, simple, white, yellow. And, yeah. That was it. So, to help him further, I share with him certain examples from covers of existing books. And, the cover designs he had created for me were the following.Cover #3Cover #4Cover #5But, while he had been designing those covers, my impatient and excited hands could not stay put of the picture. Ergo, I got my hands dirty as well. I began designing various possible cover on my own.I downloaded and experimented with a host of fonts and vector designs (see the screenshot attached above). I experimented with a number of ideas about what else my book's cover could be like. Given a solid portion of my book revolved around death, grief and bereavement, I thought maybe I could use an imagery of a crematorium on the cover. And, that's how the following series of cover designs came into existence.Cover #6Cover #7Cover #8Cover #9However, even though the idea about image with a crematorium in the background did seem good idea in my head, the outcome came out as not very appealing. It seemed very strong for my book's type and content. Also, it could give the reader wrong ideas about what my book represented. Furthermore, those covers stood as far from being minimalistic than anything else. Hence, I got back to work.I decided that I could keep the background plain white as that would me tread towards a minimal design. Also, I thought of making use of a smoke like vector design to make up a layer in the background. And, then I could write the title and other details and experiment with different fonts to decipher which design would evolve out as the best. This was there would be plenty of white space as well.Thus, upon implementation I began to come up with a host of designs with colour and font alterations. And, it was incremental designing and experimentation of these covers which got me my final and best most satisfying design.Cover #10Cover #11Cover #12Cover #13That’s my beauty.As soon as I saw that golden font and white background light up on the full sreen of my laptop, I knew that my job was done. And, that’s how my search for a cover to become the face of my book came to a conclusive end. Bliss!Yup. So, now let me jot down the entire process in a nutshell.What may seem good in your head, it might not be as appealing when realized in real world.That is what the experience has taught me. And, that is what the process revolves around. Basically, you need an idea or a concept. Then, you need to, create it, bring it to life. Then comes the step where you scrutinize the result. Then you revise it. And, if it simply doesn't work out or appeal to you, then you dump it out and start up again with a new idea or concept.That's the process which worked for me and that's how I chose the cover design for my book.
