Can science really prove that the earth is no older than 6000 years, according to what Jehovah's Witnesses believe?

Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe that the Earth was created in 6000 years. If you look very carefully at the narrative given regarding the account of creation in Genesis, you can see where the story is not one linear storyline. There are several stories being told within the chronicle of creation. As you read the first chapter of Genesis, or more specifically the first 3 verses, there is a visual that is being presented. (The Wonders of Creation Reveal God's Glory—Slide Show)This is the first image that Genesis 1:1 provides when it states: “In the beginning, God created the heavens…”Here, we should be imagining the universe as a whole. The vastness of space with all its planets and stars.Praise Jehovah from the heavens… Praise him, all his angels. Praise him, sun and moon. Praise him, all shining stars. Praise him, O highest heavens And waters above the heavens. Let them praise the name of Jehovah, For he commanded, and they were created. (Ps 148:1–5)One of the two main points we must consider about this account is that the first verse of the Bible (Genesis 1:1) is a separate story. This part of the chronicle took billions of years to complete. This single verse is a consolidated overview of the creative record when the planets and stars were formed over countless millennia and eons of time. Science estimates that the universe is 15 Billion years old.[1]At some point during this time, the earth, sun, moon, and solar system were all closely created between 4.3 Billion and 4.7 Billion years ago.[2]To complete the narration of Genesis 1:1 the story continues by saying: “…and the earth.” Within the eons of time that science has confirmed, the earth was created. (Job 38:4, 7)As the Genesis storyline continues we vacate this first creative record (Ge 1:1) and move forward into the next. (Ge 1:2) This next portion leads us into the Milky Way galaxy as “The Narrator” (1 Th 2:13) draws our attention to the vicinity of the earth. From this, these are the next imagines that should flood our minds. As we get closer to the earth’s domain, our mind's eye should draw us into the earth’s solar system. The Narrator now draws our attention to a specific destination within the heavens. Genesis 1:2 now continues the story and brings our attention even closer to the main point of the chronicle, which is… the earth. The story continues: “Now the earth was formless and desolate…”When there were no deep waters… When there were no springs overflowing with water. Before the mountains were set in place, Before the hills… When he had not yet made the earth and its fields Or the first clods of earth’s soil. (Pr 8:24–26)This is the next image the story is presenting. The second part of Genesis 1:2 states: “…and there was darkness upon the surface of the watery deep,” giving us an image similar to this.Proper attention to the narrative shows that the earth is the focus of the rest of the story of creation. Every reference from this point forward should include the vicinity of the earth from space (the solar system) and the earth’s surface as well. From verse 3 until verse 19 of the first chapter of Genesis, everything that is being “created” is for the earth. Light, darkness, the expanse, land, sea, and the luminaries were not creative works where God was forming these things into existence.Forming things into existence (including the earth itself) took place in Genesis 1:1. Throughout these verses, creative constructs are being separated and repositioned. “God’s [holy spirit] was moving about over the surface of the waters” (Ge 1:2) assisting in the creation of these earth-dependent constructs. When he established the clouds above, When he founded the fountains of the deep, When he set a decree for the sea That its waters should not pass beyond his order, When he established the foundations of the earth, (Pr 8:28, 29)Think about it. “God said ‘Let there be light.’” (Ge 1:3) If the sun and stars were created within the heavens, (Ge 1:1) then light and darkness already existed. This creative record describes the sun, moon, “and also the stars” as being repositioned giving light “to shine upon the earth.” (Ge 1:15) This is where, as the story explains, we get “Day” and “Night.” (Ge 1:4, 5) Also, keep in mind that these repositionings are taking place over long periods of eons. Billions of years most likely went by as these things were “created.”Additionally, the expanse was the airy space between the two bodies of water that were also repositioned. One body of water was “the waters on the surface of the earth.” The other body of water was brought skyward, forming a water canopy that kept the earth consistently cool. This is the “waters above the heavens” (Ps 148:4) that “were created.” (Ps 148:5) This was the same water that was released when the Great Flood commenced.[3] The Flood account tells us that “all the springs of the vast watery deep burst open and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.” (Ge 7:11)The second of the two points that we want to consider is the luminaries that were “created.” These luminaries were not formed as new constructs. Once again, Jehovah God is repositioning, taking “two great luminaries,” the sun and moon, and rotating them on an organized axis along with the earth “and also the stars” (and most likely with the rest of the planets in the solar system). This rotation is what created “the greater luminary for dominating the day and the lesser luminary for dominating the night.” (Ge 1:16) This resulted in a means to keep track of time, “as signs for seasons and for days and years.” (Ge 1:14) The Bible notes that “a division between the light (day) and the darkness (night)” was made. (Ge 1:18) This division gave us “morning” and “evening.” (Ge 1:19)Time was no longer counted in increments of millennia and eons. Now the earth had its 24-hour periods of time, where “days” and “years” could be tracked. From this “fourth creative day” onward, Jehovah viewed 1000 years of earth’s time as a single day for himself.…until the day of judgment and of destruction of the ungodly people. (2 Pet 3:7)…one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. (2 Pet 3:8)For a thousand years are in your eyes just as yesterday when it is past…(Ps 90:4)The fifth, sixth and seventh creative “days” were most likely all tracked as 1000 years. The four days before the luminaries were repositioned most likely took place over periods of eons, billions and billions of years. The Wonders of Creation Reveal God's Glory (video)Footnotes[1] Science and the Genesis Account[2] earth age - Google Search[3] Was There an Earthwide Flood?

Who was the best General of the American Civil War?

This is a difficult question. Grant did well but the fact is, many generals could have accomplished what he did with the superiority in men and materiel that he had. To me the definition is who got the most out of what they had. That would be Thomas Jackson.Jackson rose to prominence and earned his most famous nickname at the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas) on July 21, 1861. As the Confederate lines began to crumble under heavy Union assault, Jackson's brigade provided crucial reinforcements on Henry House Hill, demonstrating the discipline he instilled in his men. Although under heavy fire for several continuous hours, Jackson received a wound, breaking the middle finger of his left hand; about midway between the hand and knuckle, the ball passing on the side next the index finger. The troops of South Carolina, commanded by Gen. Barnard Elliott Bee Jr. had been overwhelmed, and he rode up to Jackson in despair, exclaiming, "They are beating us back!" "Then," said Jackson, "we will give them the bayonet!" As he rode back to his command, Bee exhorted his own troops to re-form by shouting, "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer. Rally behind the Virginians!"There is some controversy over Bee's statement and intent, which could not be clarified because he was killed almost immediately after speaking and none of his subordinate officers wrote reports of the battle. Major Burnett Rhett, chief of staff to General Joseph E. Johnston, claimed that Bee was angry at Jackson's failure to come immediately to the relief of Bee's and Francis S. Bartow's brigades while they were under heavy pressure. Those who subscribe to this opinion believe that Bee's statement was meant to be pejorative: "Look at Jackson standing there like a stone wall!"Regardless of the controversy and the delay in relieving Bee, Jackson's brigade, which would thenceforth be known as the Stonewall Brigade, stopped the Union assault and suffered more casualties than any other Southern brigade that day; Jackson has since then been generally known as Stonewall Jackson.During the battle, Jackson displayed a gesture common to him and held his left arm skyward with the palm facing forward – interpreted by his soldiers variously as an eccentricity or an entreaty to God for success in combat. His hand was struck by a bullet or a piece of shrapnel and he suffered a small loss of bone in his middle finger. He refused medical advice to have the finger amputated. After the battle, Jackson was promoted to major general (October 7, 1861) and given command of the Valley District, with headquarters in Winchester.General Jackson by Augusto Ferrer-DalmauHis best display of talent, however was in the Valley Campaign. In the spring of 1862, Union Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomacapproached Richmond from the southeast in the Peninsula Campaign. Maj. Gen. Irvin McDowell's large corps was poised to hit Richmond from the north, and Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks's army threatened the Shenandoah Valley. Jackson was ordered by Richmond to operate in the Valley to defeat Banks's threat and prevent McDowell's troops from reinforcing McClellan.Jackson possessed the attributes to succeed against his poorly coordinated and sometimes timid opponents: a combination of great audacity, excellent knowledge and shrewd use of the terrain, and an uncommon ability to inspire his troops to great feats of marching and fighting.Historical marker marking the end of Gen. Stonewall Jackson's pursuit of the Federals after the Battle of McDowell, May 12, 1862The campaign started with a tactical defeat at Kernstown on March 23, 1862, when faulty intelligence led him to believe he was attacking a small detachment. But it became a strategic victory for the Confederacy, because his aggressiveness suggested that he possessed a much larger force, convincing President Abraham Lincoln to keep Banks' troops in the Valley and McDowell's 30,000-man corps near Fredericksburg, subtracting about 50,000 soldiers from McClellan's invasion force. As it transpired, it was Jackson's only defeat in the Valley.By adding Maj. Gen. Richard S. Ewell's large division and Maj. Gen. Edward "Allegheny" Johnson's small division, Jackson increased his army to 17,000 men. He was still significantly outnumbered, but attacked portions of his divided enemy individually at McDowell, defeating both Brig. Gens. Robert H. Milroy and Robert C. Schenck. He defeated Banks at Front Royal and Winchester, ejecting him from the Valley. Lincoln decided that the defeat of Jackson was an immediate priority (though Jackson's orders were solely to keep Union forces occupied away from Richmond). He ordered Irvin McDowell to send 20,000 men to Front Royal and Maj. Gen. John C. Frémont to move to Harrisonburg. If both forces could converge at Strasburg, Jackson's only escape route up the Valley would be cut. After a series of maneuvers, Jackson defeated Frémont's command at Cross Keys and Brig. Gen. James Shields at Port Republic on June 8–9. Union forces were withdrawn from the Valley. It was a classic military campaign of surprise and maneuver. Jackson pressed his army to travel 646 miles (1,040 km) in 48 days of marching and won five significant victories with a force of about 17,000 against a combined force of 60,000. Stonewall Jackson's reputation for moving his troops so rapidly earned them the oxymoronic nickname "foot cavalry". He became the most celebrated soldier in the Confederacy (until he was eventually eclipsed by Lee) and lifted the morale of the Southern public.Stonewall Jackson - Wikipedia
