I Introduction The Admissions Essay: Fill & Download for Free

This is a great question because being an excellent student only gets one foot in the door of the admissions process. Getting the other foot in the door requires strength in other parts of your application including recommendations, extracurriculars, and yes, essays.During my time in college admissions, I have probably read 10,000+ admissions essays. I would roughly break them down as such:The vast majority of admissions essays are just kind of mediocre and try to play it too safe.This is for a few reasons (and in other words, this is what you should avoid in your essays):They rely on clichés such as “winning a big game” or going on a service -learning trip.They try to cover too much ground (this is very common and usually involves a student trying to cram so much of their resume into the essay). The result is a bland essay that doesn’t read as unique or personal.The essay reads like a five paragraph essay where the student includes an introduction, three points, and a conclusion.I won’t spend much time talking about the essays that “miss the mark”, but make sure that you proofread your essays, avoid any super controversial content, and most importantly have someone else read your essay (a teacher, guidance counselor, parent, sibling, friend, etc.).So what makes a “great” essay standout?The essay is written like a story, as opposed to an essay. Stories standout and are going to be much more memorable for the admissions reader.The story that you tell has specific details, dialogue, and description that are unique to you and your life experiences.The story “shows” the reader something about your character, traits, or personality.I know that some students think, “but I am not a great writer or storyteller…”Nonsense.Storytelling can be learned and has more to do with tapping into your unique experiences and less to do with pure writing ability. First of all, review some contents in the internet regarding your topic. An intial study will give u some ideas to frame the outline of the essay .Be clear with your ideas first.Make a rough structure of your essay. It should be the outline of your ideas.Start with the introduction. Include some points about the past perspectives and current scope of the topic. Your title and introduction should compel people reading it.Prepare the main content (body) of the essay. Contents written here should revolve around your chosen topic.If u have any innovative ideas in ur mind, write them in the most presentable way.When u come to the conclusion part, write ur overall perspective of the topic. Suggestions or other remedial measures of the process can also be included in the conclusion part.Note: Inlcude some catchy ideas or suggestions. Highlight those catchy ones. It is better to break the whole part in to a number of paragraphs.The most important part of writing an essay is to have a continuity of content from one passage to another. For a direct answer just scroll to the bottom...It's actually quite... vague. The evaluation that you will go through during CW is almost secretive, but what I've heard is that you're being assessed all the time. You will be talking with peer ambassadors all the time as well as the admissions officers who will be close by. Essentially, here are a few things I believe you should be aware of:Follow all the instructions that you're given! Everything from the emails that you'll receive before arriving, such as bringing your object and preparing your introduction with it (it will be clear when you get the email, don't worry ;) ). During CW you have to make sure that you follow all the directions that you're given. Don't do anything stupid (smoke, drink, sex, you know, really stupid stuff) and make sure you're on time for everything (be especially careful with that if you have jet lag). The admissions officers are friendly, but they're serious about their work, so you don't want to disappoint them.You will have a sample class, and I would personally recommend that you choose one that you will be comfortable with so that you can make deep and insightful comments during the discussion that will set you apart from the rest. A student that can make an impression in a single class is sure to be noticed more often.You will have to write an essay on campus. I won't tell you what it's about because then you'll be getting ideas and become stressed, but there isn't really any way to prepare for it anyway. The essay doesn't require any previous knowledge about anything, but just make sure that you convey what you want to say clearly in the space that they give you. Practice writing a reflective piece and ask someone to read it and see if they understand what you meant. If you can do that I think you should be fine.You will also get two interviews: One with a professor and one with an admissions officer. The one with the admissions officer is like 5 minutes, really basic, so just answer sincerely. The one with the professor could get more technical, but they'll be either related to your intended major or the essay you wrote before candidate weekend. Same as with the admissions, just relax and be sincere with your answers and you should be fine.Lastly, they want to see if you simply fit in. NYU AD seems like a really social place, where everyone knows everyone and gets along with everyone. So try and meet as many people as you can, trust me even if you don't get in you won't regret having done so. Just be yourself.So that's about it. These things may or may not be the same for when you go to your CW, but the general idea should stay approximately the same. The most important thing though, is that you should always be yourself. They're not trying to see whether or not you're "worthy" of NYU AD, the fact that you got into CW already means you're really good, but now they want to see if you truly fit in. If you don't, then a rejection might do you better than an acceptance. Either way, the experience will be amazing :)
