What are some of the most creative things people have done with MOOCs like Coursera?
This story is from the Human Computer Interation (HCI) MOOC, where an undergraduate student at the National Institute of Technology Surathkal, as a part of the class project developed an application to raise awareness on environment issues. The project gained traction and now it will be used by thousands of schools in 47 countries. This project has also got an honorable mention at the IBM/IEEE Smarter Planet Challenge and the UNESCO has asked the team to develop a similar platform for them. Here is his (Chandramouli Sharma's) full story from Coursera Wiki (Link: https://class.coursera.org/hci-003/wiki/view?page=AdviceandStoriesfromFormerStudents)A success story from a former student and current Community TA:I am Chandramouli Sharma, a junior year undergraduate in Computer Science from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, India. Here is my amazing journey from a small project in HCI class to a platform that will now be used by thousands of schools in 47 countries and the awards I won along the way. I worked on a web application which could display complex environmental pollution data sets into interactive visualizations. This could be used by school students to understand environmental issues. Below is one of the paper prototypes that I developed during the class. After a few iterations I came up with a digital prototype. It looked something like this. After that I did usability studies and other techniques I learnt during the course . Now it looked something like this.Soon enough it started gaining traction and people started liking the idea. We then did a pilot user study at NITK English Medium School, Karnataka on 100 students of grade 6-8.Having tested it on around 100 students, I gained confidence in the idea and applied it for IBM/IEEE Smarter Planet Challenge. This idea received an honorary mention among the Top 10, across all the projects from around the world . This was the only one from India to be in Top 10. Here is the link to the award page. This project later caught the attention UNEP and UNESCO and they have now asked our team to develop a similar platform for them.
What is your review of the 2019 UPSC General Studies Mains papers?
A2A.GS 2019 was a game changer, in short. UPSC is colloquially called Unpredictable PSC but I guess they might as well name it that for real.Let's see paper-wise:GS 1Culture and history portions were doable as the questions were from regular sources. Gandhara Art question required some creativity though.World history made a comeback but manageable.Geography continues to be “God knows from where”. Specific questions like what is water stress were asked that have a proper definition which not a lot of people would know. Also, question on water masses threw almost everyone off balance. But the biggest surprise is Society portion. The debacle of “challenges to our cultural practices in the name of secularism” created a Catch 22 situation. If we start “creating” these challenges, we would have to write negatives of secularism which is accepted as the basic structure of Constitution by Hon'ble Supreme Court. Thus, it posed a moral and practical hazard. Now who knows the purpose of the question? It could simply have been to test candidate's decision making about whether they'll take the bait or not. But we wouldn't know it. And would never know it since UPSC doesn't give even an iota of clue about what if expects.Overall Inference: Most questions Doable but nothing like past years when even though the questions were difficult, candidates could deconstruct mindset of the examiner. And what was not doable could only be left.GS 2Polity portion: Difficult. Questions on CAT, Federal Supremacy tore this portion! We can't make stuff up.Governance: Complicated and Difficult. Most of the questions were hard even to understand. Then there are multiple interpretation models. Again, we would never truly know the right answers to these questions.International Relations: the only manageable portion except for UNESCO question which seemed to have been dropped from sky.GS 3Economy: Except for GST question, economy was more agriculture-oriented. Inflation question was loaded and had no direct answer.Very pin-pointed questions were asked on coastal mining, MS Visvesvaraya, Cyberdome. Extremely difficult to get marks here as one can't get by writing general stuff. This is a setback as GS3 used to be the most rewarding among GS papers.GS 4Section A of theory questions was on expected lines. Some questions were specific but much less than that of 2016 paper.UPSC does want to surprise us. This showed in Case Studies as 3 of those were not on the pattern that we have grown accustomed to. In fact, case studies didn't even ask for Solutions, just asked what are the problems?Number of pages for case studies given was 3. It seems that UPSC doesn't want us to write much. This is just a conjecture though since we never come to know what UPSC really wants.Overall comments:Vagueness quotient increasedFollowing fixed patterns of Intro-Body-Conclusion taught as gospels by Test Series institutes won't work.Reliance on Monthly Current Affairs magazine needs to be reduced. Focus should be given to Newspapers.Having said that, return of GS is low. No one has even got 500/1000, but people get more than 60% in Essays and Optional and also interview. Thus focus should be on those to get competitive edge.Ethics paper can still be worked upon. Content development needs to be emphasized instead of diagram approach for case studies as nature of case studies is evolving.Hope this helps! :)
