PDF Editor FAQ

Is making 300k a year considered successful in New York City?

Not really.NYC isn’t all about money = success - there are different definitions of success here, including just managing to live here happily. A lot of success in NYC is measured in career accomplishment and peer respect without a monetary component: books published with great reviews whether they sell or not, peer-reviewed published studies, great music/dance/art/theatre reviews in the NYT, prestigious teaching gigs, being allowed to do your set at a higher level comedy club, having a star come up to you after a show and congratulate you on your performance - these things aren’t about money. Now some industries are ALL about money, like finance and real estate. And in those industries, $300k is not going to be impressive. So $300k/year should be a fine amount of money to live on in NYC (as long as you’re not carrying much debt), but it isn’t in and of itself going to impress anyone.

How do you find community musical theatre in big cities?

Google is your favourite tool here. Regardless of where you live, you can simply Google "Community Theatre in _____" Name your city or suburb here. There are also websites that list groups and shows. I live in Australia and regularly check out sites as I am a theatre person. I am also a theatre reviewer.I am sure other countries have similar sites.

Is it worth the money to see a preview performance of a Broadway play prior to its opening?

Previews in the theatre just before opening: absolutely.Out-of-town previews (New Haven, Philadelphia, Washington, etc): yes, almost always.I've done this a few times. Most recently in London I saw a performance of a brand new musical based on “Groundhog Day” at the Old Vic. The previews had been delayed (and I only had a few days left in London) and when I showed up for a performance that was supposed to be the first preview, they said it still wasn't quite ready, gave us all our money back, and told us we were going to see the last dress rehearsal instead. It was great! Some of the blocking and dancing were still uneven, but it was fun to know I was seeing something no audience had ever seen.In New York some years ago I saw a preview of Spamalot a week or so before it officially opened, and it was very polished; you would never have known it was a preview. Last summer in Washington DC I attended a preview of the Broadway-bound musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” which was very good and thought provoking, and it was a lot of fun to have seen it before all my NYC theatre hound friends. In some cases when you go to a preview you'll see a show that will fail and close early. There aren't any New York reviews to rely on. But I consider that a plus, not a minus; live theatre is supposed to be a little volatile, maybe even a little risky. To me that is part of the magic.
