Before my first day at Facebook, I recieved a PDF with detailed instructions of the various ways to get to Facebook HQ. I elected to take the Cal Train from SOMA to Palo Alto.There were actually two stops in Palo Alto I could get off on (Palo Alto & California Ave), and when I noticed someone else on the CalTrain with a Facebook-branded bag, I told them today was my first day, and they kindly replied that I should get off at the Palo Alto stop with them. The documents I received beforehand implied the California Ave was closer to FB HQ than the Palo Alto stop, but there are more Bauer shuttles to FB HQ from the Palo Alto stop. (To all new hires, get off at the Palo Alto stop!). I walked with my new friend to the Bauer shuttle that would take me to 1601 California Ave. and eventually to 1050, where orientation was.At orientation, various employees came to talk to us on topics ranging from Chris Cox's personal take on the importance of Facebook, to Ben Blumenfeld's advice about the incredible importance of representing yourself and Facebook well in public because of how public facing of a company we are, to subtly being advised by someone in Facebook legal to not use our work machines to look at porn.The only real highlight of the morning session was Chris Cox's talk on how Facebook fulfills Marshall Mcluhan's theory that all technology (starting from the construction of roads to the printing press) are built to fulfill the basic human desire to connect with each other, and Facebook is an extension of that. I highly recommend it)After the morning session of presentations, everyone's managers came to meet each new hire to eat lunch with us (No first day jitters on who you'll eat lunch with!). Lunch is provided by Facebook's culinary team, led by Chef Josef, and is usually pretty good food.After eating lunch, we returned to listening to other people speak. In the afternoon session, we got our laptops and cell phones, and we set up our accounts and passwords to access internal Facebook tools.We were also given a rundown of other things relevant to new employees at Facebook like how much vacation time we get and 401k plans. Towards the end of the day we showed HR our work authorization forms (passport/VISA/Greencard), recieved our employee badges, and also picked out a Facebook branded Timbuk2 bag that we get to keep forever. By about 4PM we were let out of orientation.After orientation, I went straight to get a wireless 3g card for my laptop. After that I went to my desk to see a brand new 30 inch Dell monitor waiting for me. I plugged in my laptop, entered my new password I had set up earlier, and everything just worked which I think is actually kind of rare.My manager had sent a couple PPT decks to look over which were waiting for me in my inbox and it took another day or so to subscribe to all the relevant e-mail lists, but by the end of my first week I was working on putting together my first Product Requirement Document.Overall I was really happy with the on-boarding process.After your first day, all Facebook engineers start Bootcamp (How does Facebook Engineering's "Bootcamp" program work?), but I'm not sure how quickly employees in other orgs within Facebook are able to get started.**Also this answer is accurate for people who started around May, 2010. I've heard the orientation process has now stretched to 1.5 days, which I think is a mistake.

The United States is also very isolated from the world markets. The Eurasian landmass is ultimately where the markets are, as well as the fact they combine for a whopping 5.2 billion people, versus the US with just 325 million.5.2 billion people doesn’t just mean markets, it also means there is a very high likelihood smart people, and their inventions, will originate from Eurasia. However, a huge proportion of inventions actually come from America today. Is it because Americans are exceptional? No; in fact from the PISA scores:America’s own people actually aren’t that amazing. Rather, you can clearly see who’s at the top. In fact, China owns 4 of the top 5 spots in math, and the only other spot (Singapore) is also majority Chinese.But wait, if Americans aren’t that smart, why does so much innovation come from America? Because of immigration.Which countries have the most immigrants?Also, America’s immigrants have a large proportion of high income immigrants - as opposed to 2nd place Russia’s mostly poor former Soviet republic immigrants or 3rd place Saudi Arabia’s literal slaves.America needs this influx of immigrants in order to make sure it continues being the leader in business, science, and technology. The NeXT Cube was an innovative design, but the hardware inside was, for the most part, just standard Motorola 68K stuff, similar to what was used in classic Macs prior to 1993. Find a way to put a Mac ROM of that era into it, and it probably would have even booted System 7. As far as features unique to it as a NeXT machine, it was more an evolutionary step than a breakthrough computer.NeXT computers did have some innovative ideas beyond just the “cube” form factor, which Apple later copied with its own Cube after Jobs returned to the company.At NeXT, Jobs disliked floppy drives and even the hard disks of the era, and originally outfitted NeXT machines with a higher capacity magneto-optical drive, which were similar, but not identical in design, to the later Zip and Jaz drives from Iomega. Unfortunately, in 1988, the technology wasn’t mature and the drives were unreliable, not to mention that their biggest selling point—being removable—was defeated by the fact you needed to leave the disk in to boot and run the OS. By the time the Cube came out in 1990, Jobs had reluctantly gone back to standard hard disks, and brought back the floppy as an option.NeXT also used DisplayPostScript for screen output, a new graphics server based on Adobe PostScript that was vastly superior to anything in the DOS world of the time, or classic Mac OS, or even Unix, where X was less than two years old.
