What does the typical British citizen think of Hong Kong Citizens? Do they consider them their countrymen closer to 1997? Did they feel that they abandoned their people?

Londoner here.Several obvious differences between our country and Hong Kong comes to mind:English is our national language, and only 4 countries in the world use it as a de facto official language. For the 56 countries where English is a de jure and de facto official language, only 23 of them use it as a primary language. Hong Kong isn’t a country so it is not listed, instead it is listed as a non-sovereign entities where English is a de jure official language from being a former colony of the UK but was not made into a primary language for a 100 years.Only 53% of HK speak English and only 4% accept it as a primary language. By comparison, 83% of Singapore use English as a primary language while 36% speak it at home. HK is a hit and miss for English speakers as far as communication goes because Cantonese is the one of the main languages used in the Guangdong province of which HK is a part of, so there is a significant language gap there.Culturally, there is an obvious difference. Residents of HK have long been a diverse group of Cantonese, Mandarin and Hakka speakers and have chosen to maintain their roots even during the colonial period. We stick out like a sore thumb in HK while it would be the same for them in the UK.Despite our colonial history, most people are not all that adventurous when it comes to picking out a dot on a map and visiting that place regardless of what it was. So it’s not that most people were not interested in HK, it’s the cultural barrier that many have feared being on foreign land. That’s putting it nicely. UK unfortunately had (and still has) a racist past that if you weren’t white then you’re not really all that British. I mentioned a term that some have used in the past (FILTH - Failed in London, try Hong Kong). Yes, that really happened. Bankers and those working in the financial sector would demand to be paid and accommodated well if they had to move to HK, otherwise they would rather stay on the British mainland. That is changing drastically now. You need to be speaking Mandarin because that’s where the money is.Most people have a neutral view of HK as a past colony and presently a Chinese city. It is largely known as tourist destination for those who want to try the Cantonese style of living. Politically, many of us have considered HK residents as citizens of China. They have never been under any obligations to provide military assistance in the past as military services was not compulsory. It was in fact the UK’s responsibility to provide defense for HK, and it is China’s turn now. Would HK residents accept compulsory military service? “The majority of enlisted people do not have the motivation required to go through rigorous training and gain top-class military skills.” says Rai Arlin from The University of Hong Kong. When the Japanese invaded HK, our British forces left. Today, we definitely do not have the funds and the support to invest a better form of defense in HK from a location that far from our shores. China is in the best position to provide that support, and for the region’s sake it will probably be more peaceful that way.I don’t believe we abandoned the HK people, because legally and historically the region was never ours. Our government rented the place tax free for business purposes which made some people rich, but didn’t really help our economy much. What was past was just business, which many of us had no part in it to relate very much to HK, and it is because of this sentiment that might make us appear that we “abandoned” people in HK. Personally, I hope that peace will once again return to HK prior to these riots.Edited: I’ve rewritten my answer because it felt a bit nationalistic and I am anything but.List of territorial entities where English is an official language - WikipediaList of countries by English-speaking population - Wikipediahttps://yp.scmp.com/over-to-you/columns/article/105424/face-should-military-service-be-compulsory-hong-kong'Failed in London, Try Hong Kong' fades as China deals beckonWhat does the typical British citizen think of Hong Kong Citizens? Do they consider them their countrymen closer to 1997? Did they feel that they abandoned their people?Edit: I would like to add a few things based on the comments I’ve received,Not everyone was a racist or wanted to destroy China and their people in HK, Taiwan or where ever. Many foreigners have made China their home and are perhaps a little more defensive of their adopted homeland than most. I’d say, good for them. Most Brits do not feel that they have an obligation to relate to HK, as it was never in our line of sight culturally and economically. We have enough problems to deal with. If China is willing to lend out a lifeline then that would be superb for our economy. Some people are trying to bring up Tibet and Taiwan to persuade me that China is some big colonial terrorist. Again, we have nothing in common with either of these places. If someone wants the Isle of Man or the Falkland Islands then they can take them. They really don’t mean much to most of us these days except to the nationalists.

What do you think about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez?

I strongly dislike her politics, her ideals, and her platform. I don’t hate her as a person- I am sure she is a fine person. I think she actually believes in what she is doing and I think her intentions are good. The problem with AOC is that she is terribly and horribly wrong on nearly every front. She is also terribly uninformed. Let’s go through the list#1: The Green New DealMany do not know much about the GND. I actually read the thing so I have a decent understanding of it.Firstly it’s not a law, its a resolution- basically a list of goals that require further legislation. It’s an outline of what she wants to see done. It’s only 20 some pages long if I remember correctly.Beyond that, though it is terrible awful and nonsensical. It requires farming be done locally in small organic farms. This could make food harder to get and drastically more expensive- seriously harming the lower classesIt would require such strict regulations that the construction, agriculture, and energy industries would basically be nationalizedIt would cost at least 90 trillion dollars. Which is 2 times more than all the money in the US and Europe combined and more than the entire world’s GDP ($87 trillion in 2019)Where would this money come from? Tax every billionaire at 100%and then tax every millionaire at 100% and you’d have 5% of the money you need. No matter who you take from you could NEVER pay for this. Even attempting it would destroy the entire economy foreverIt would have us rebuild every home in American in 10 yearsIt would have us adopt 100% renewable energy. This is great in concept but it can’t happen. Solar panels and wind power are not stable or efficient enough to supply America with the power it needs. No matter how many we build it would not be enoughThe only way to create 100% renewable energy is to use nuclear power and the GND specifically says no Nuclear powerIt goes on about the wage gap which doesn’t existIt’s just really painfully bad.By supporting this you only show that you have NO idea how economies function. It would be a disaster of biblical proportions. It would make the cost of electricity and food extremely expensive, it would require an insane amount of money, it would make everyone poor and desperate, and it would be impossible to even do.Someone explain to me where the 90 trillion dollars come from? Someone explain how we rebuild all the homes in the US? Someone explain how we are going to make solar panels drastically more effective in a short time span. The Green New Deal is AOC’s baby. She presented it, advocates for it, and loves it- even though she did not write it.#2: Kids say the darndest thingsUnemployment is low because people are working 2 jobs….Garbage disposals need to be regulatedFacebook supports the alt-right because it used a moderately conservative publication as a fact-checker along with CNN and MSNBCShe cannot name the 3 branches of governmentShe seemingly did not know what district she serves as she wrote in the wrong oneShe says capitalism is irredeemable and that we should adopt socialism like the Nordic countries- even though the Nordic countries are capitalist.#3: She is progressiveI call her progressive to be nice. Others may say she is a social justice warrior or a regressive.Regardless of what we designate the group to be- I dislike the group.I don’t like that they build their platform on falsehoods like the gender pay gap, the pink tax, and gender spectrums.I don’t like that the underlying philosophy of postmodernism is highly speculative and not at all factual.I don’t like that they create strange terms to attack people likeToxic MasculinityBeing assigned a genderMicro-aggressionsMacro-aggressionsWhite privilegeI don’t like that they decry all who oppose them as monstrous bigots.I don’t like that they cannot take any criticismI don’t like that the whole movement is focused around Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook and is more about scoring virtue points than actually trying to fix things.I don’t like that they attack conservative rallies, protest speakers, and demand white students be barred from attending class.I don’t like how they constantly search for racism and sexism in every little thing.I don’t like how the demand we change language to fit their needs (censorship).I don’t like how they hijack things and make them all about sexism or racism- like when they attacked a scientist who just landed a probe on an asteroid for wearing a shirt that had bikini models on it.I don’t like how they dig through old social media posts to get people fired they dislike. Like any of them haven’t said something stupid.I don’t like them. I disagree with them on every front and I think they are 100% wrong about nearly everything. This is AOC’s political base. This is what she supports, this is what she advocates for, and these people are her followers.

Comments from Our Customers

The product is fair. If there'd been any support for it I might still be using it. But I had to buy another product when it stopped working. The support people didn't even try to help me.
