What is the difference between organised labour and unorganized labour? I have read in some newspapers that a large part of labour force of India is unorganized. Is this true?

Let me answer from my understanding - it might not be quite true to the economic definition.Usually, with most larger and / or well managed companies, they get a proper registration from the local bodies, to conduct business. They also keep proper records of their employees and contractors, the wages or salaries they provide to them, deduct taxes from the wages, report to IT department, and where applicable also pay Employment Provident Fund contributions. This would be what you call an organised labour.Consider this, many smaller companies and self employed businesses in India don't do many of these. These range from small shops to individual tradesmen. Sometimes these companies might be registered with the local body to conduct business but they most likely under report the number of employees they have and as a result they will not provide PF benefits, wages are paid in cash and no paper records maintained. Many tradesmen, who provide services do so in an undocumented manner. Carpenters, mechanics, electricians and others give services but take fees in cash and don't report to IT nor do they pay any taxes. If you live in India or have lived in India, you would know that majority of the people will fall under the last two categories I mentioned. These constiute the unorganised labour.

Why do mechanics charge more per hour than most people earn in a day?

I’m not a mechanic, but I am a self-employed freelancer who charges $130 an hour + tax for my services. I’m not an employee, I run my own business. And here’s why I charge what I do:As an EMPLOYEEI have a regular wage + overtime if necessary + holiday leave (perhaps with 17% leave loading) + sick leave + 9% superannuation for the hours I’m in the office, even if not doing productive work for 100% of my time there.I get paid for time I’m chatting with colleagues, making myself coffee, using the bathroom, attending work meetings, travelling to client jobs in work hours, time on-site providing free quotes, refilling the photocopier, writing correspondence to clients, etc.I get paid for the time I’m sitting around when there are no customers to buy goods, or for restocking the shelves, or cleaning the floors, or doing the daily banking and post.I get paid for the time I spend sending emails and answering calls, posting work-related updates on social media, attending industry events, etc.I don’t pay the rent or rates for the building I work in. I don’t pay the power bills. I don’t pay the water bills. I don’t pay the maintenance costs to replace things that break or wear out. This is all covered by my employer.I don’t pay for phone or internet charges to do my job. I don’t pay for the company website - the annual hosting charge and domain name fee. I don’t pay for business cards, or uniforms, or safety equipment, or software, or subscriptions for services. This is all covered by my employer.I don’t pay the public liability insurance or building/contents insurance to protect me and my belongings while at work. This is all covered by my employer.I don’t pay for stationary, or the tea and coffee in the kitchen, or soap and toilet paper in the bathroom. This is all covered by my employer.I don’t pay for fuel I use while doing my job (or I can claim the cost back from my employer) or my employer might pay provide a car, including fuel, the registration and insurance costs. There are many things I use at my place of work that I don’t have to pay for.As an EMPLOYER / SELF-EMPLOYED CONTRACTORI don’t have a regular wage for hours worked. I only get paid for the time I’m working on a customer or client’s job.I don’t get paid for the time I spend on administration - invoicing, quoting, preparing proposals, doing the books, reconciling bank accounts, filing, updating website information, updating employee/customer policies, keeping up-to-date with any applicable changes to legislation around my industry or employee conditions.I don’t get paid for the time I spend cleaning the workplace, answering the phone and fielding queries, or responding to emails, or doing the banking and post, or reordering stock and restocking the shelves.I don’t get paid for time sitting around without customers through my door, or the time and money I spend on customer acquisition - attending networking events, drafting marketing material, posting on social media, etc.Clients also object to paying my time to visit them on site or attend meetings. They expect that to be done for free. If I charge travel or consultation time, purely to “put a face to the name” and to “get to know one another before jumping into bed”, then they feel put out and potentially go elsewhere. If I have 38 hours in a week and need to spend 15 hours on non-billable work, I either lose billable hours and can only bill 23 hours in a week or I have to do these things on top of those billable hours. Which translates to 15 hours of overtime each week - which is not only unpaid, but certainly has no additional overtime penalties.Alternatively, I hire a person to do these things.Which means I pay them a wage from the billable hours, in addition to paying myself or another employee a wage from the same billable hours + any overtime + cover for sick leave or holidays + superannuation + taxes, etc.And with the money from these billable hours I pay rent or rates for the building I’m using.I pay the cost of the power, the water, the phone, the internet.I pay the cost of building maintenance to replace things and pay contractors to provide any work required.I pay the cost of equipment used in my business and the cost of consumables. Machinery, computers, parts, vehicles, fuel, website maintenance, advertising, insurances, printer ink, stationery, tea & coffee facilities, etc., etc., etc.I pay to cover the expenses involved with providing my services to those who need them. And sure, I can claim expenses as a means to reduce my tax liability - but I don’t get that money back. The government doesn’t reimburse me for all the money spent on payments for expenses. It just means I reduce the tax payable on any profits I make and wages I pay myself. If my business turns over $200,000 and I have expenses of $150,000, then I only pay tax on $50,000 rather than $200,000 (although I still have to pay the sales tax collected on all sales made, regardless of my profits or loss). From that seemingly large billable rate of $130 per hour I personally charge, I personally end up with about $30 in my own pocket after factoring in non-billable time for non-billable duties and non-billable expenses. The mechanic is the same. From that seemingly exorbitant hourly rate they charge you, this isn’t what the mechanic themselves is paid, or the owner of the business. The hourly rate the client is charged has to cover all the other costs associated with running a business in order to provide the service you need. What a contractor, freelancer, or business owner CHARGE per hour for delivery of their service is not what they (or their employees) EARN per hour. Not even close! As an employee, what you earn doesn’t have to cover all the other expenses involved with providing the job you have or the service you provide. However, the owner of the business still needs to charge customers enough to pay wages to their employees (and themselves - they still have to eat and have a roof over their head) as well as all the other associated expenses for providing that service.
