How is life in developed countries compared to Indonesia?

I think the most distinguishable traits that you will see in a developed country (USA for example) are the public infrastructures:Public roads - Roads are like a grid and there are usually no potholes. Smooth and clean for the most part. So if you’re driving a car, it doesn’t feel like an off-road track such as in Indonesia. There are a lot more traffic lights in between with visible street names. There are stop signs and warning signs in different areas, especially near the school area. Overall, it doesn’t look like a maze. Also, highways are usually free with very few that have a toll fee. Another thing, people follow the rules and drive within their lane, not all over the place! Every morning, they have a huge vehicle and other city staffs that sweep and clean the streets.Public transportation - Buses and MRTs are well integrated within the city. From your home, you can walk 5 minutes to the bus stop and takes you to another bus stop or MRT station for transit. It’s a lot easier to get to places, when you don’t have a car. I would also like to point out that the conditions of public buses and trains are much better and safer. But once in a while, you’ll find someone homeless or crazy in bus stations. Although, I’ve heard transjakarta buses have improved considerably.Schools - FREE! Unless if you prefer a private school. It’s also much bigger with different facilities designed to provide different classes, such as PE (gym, field track & swimming pool), science, math, theater, and etc. In the west coast, it’s usually wider and no second floors. On the east coast, it’s smaller with multiple floor buildings. Also lots of school competitions in a lot fo sports throughout the county.Public parks - Easily accessible to the public in every city (small and large) where you can have a picnic, bbq, or play basketball, football, soccer, and other activities. Elementary and middle school are also accessible for sports clubs to compete on the weekends. This is where you usually see hot soccer moms…if you’re lucky.Public libraries - plenty and accessible in every city as well. Register with your ID and you can start borrowing a period of time. You can use computers there as well.Apartments - It’s usually only 2–3 stories high in most suburban areas. In major cities, they are high rises.Universities - Far bigger, much cleaner, nice campuses, and overall a lot better than their Indonesian counterparts.Parking - Parkings are spacious and free for the most part. It’s not like in Indonesia where you have to pay parking every single time you park on the side, and there aren’t those parking gangsters around anywhere. In most cases, there are parking spaces reserved for the handicapped closest to the stores.Food - A diversity of supermarkets or restaurants are widely available and affordable if you live in a diverse area. One big difference is that you don’t have to wait so long to pay for your groceries in the supermarket. All the cashiers are trained and works fast. They scan everything, then bag it (or another staff bags it for you). In Indonesia, its scan one product, bag one product, and the next thing you know there are price differences from the shelf and the computer register. By the time you pay, you’ve probably spent 30–45 mins just waiting in line, lol.Houses - Houses are built of wood with front yards and backyards. They’re on average bigger than your typical houses in Indonesia.Shopping malls - They’re not as fancy as In Indonesia’s luxury malls. Although there are some somewhere. In the US, people shop indoors or outdoors. And yes, free parking!Police cars - heavily customized and equipped with computer systems that can identify you in a few minutes. They’re much less likely to take bribes. There re a few who does, and issue you a ticket because they need to reach a monthly quota every month.Electronics, appliances and other products - Much cheaper with better value. Period.Maids/Helpers - For the majority, they don’t have such luxury. Clean by yourself, wash by yourself, drive by yourself, and cook by yourself. There are services that offer these things, but you have to be pretty wealthy to afford this.Drying Clothes - They use a drying machine and they don’t need to hang their clothes out to dry.TV Entertainment - A wide variety and all in HD quality.Students work - Some students in High school already work, while most University students work after classes either part-time or full-time. Some even have two jobs. Most jobs pay by the hour with overtime pay.DMV - This is where you take your driving test. No bribery. If you don’t pass, you can take it again. Written and driving test.Documents - Are easily attainable without too much of a hassle. Whatever you need to process can be done in your local city government or police station. There is no need for Pak. RT/RW to sign your letter, then go to this department and that department while your pocket money is getting smaller for every location you go to.Sewage system - Have you seen teenage mutant ninja turtles? It’s like that. It’s generally effective and have relative few floods in some parts of the country.Prices - Food, clothes, electronics, gas, and other needs are generally very stable throughout the four seasons. Gas is usually higher in the summer or any new Apple (the company, not the fruit) products that comes out.Complaint - If you have a complaint or you want to know what’s going in within your local city’s plannings and problems, you can go to the city council meeting to get involved.Ambulance - When you hear a siren either from police cars, fire department cars, or ambulance cars, you need to drive to the furthest right lane and stop to let them pass by.Foster Homes - some families send their parents to these homes when they are too old. The elders have their own room and they hang out with other elders within the facility and monitored by the certified workers there. This is what I can think of for now. These countries are considered developed, because there are infrastructures and systems that are in place to make the people’s lives much easier to live in. It shows that people are following the rules while the government is doing their job.

What happened at the Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena in May 2017?

The Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena in May 2017 witnessed the deadliest terrorist attack and the first suicide bombing in the United Kingdom since the 7 July 2005 London bombings. What happened: On 22 May 2017 at 22:31 BST a suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device, packed with nuts and bolts to act as shrapnel, in the foyer area of the Manchester Arena. The attack took place after a concert by American pop star Ariana Grande that was part of her Dangerous Woman Tour. 14,200 people attended the concert. Many exiting concert-goers and waiting parents were in the foyer at the time of the explosion. According to evidence presented at the coroner's inquest, the bomb was strong enough to kill people up to 20 metres (66 ft) away. Greater Manchester Police declared the incident a terrorist attack and suicide bombing. It was the deadliest attack in the United Kingdom since the 7 July 2005 London bombings.Casualties: The explosion killed the attacker and 22 concert-goers and parents who were in the entrance waiting to pick up their children following the show; 119 people were initially reported as injured. This number was revised by police to 250 on 22 June, with the addition of severe psychological trauma and minor injuries. In May 2018, the number of injured was revised to 800. The dead included ten people aged under 20; the youngest victim was an eight-year-old girl and the oldest was a 51-year-old woman. Of the 22 victims, twenty were Britons and two were British-based Polish nationals. North West Ambulance Service reported that 60 of its ambulances attended the scene, carried 59 people to local hospitals, and treated walking wounded on site. Of those hospitalized, 12 were children under the age of 16. In total, 112 people were hospitalized for their injuries, and 27 were treated for injuries that did not require hospitalization. Out of this total of 139, 79 were children. The first doctor thought to have been on scene was an off-duty consultant anaesthetist, Michael Daley. In recognition of his bravery for the role he played in the immediate medical response to the incident, Daley's name was entered into the British Medical Association Book of Valour in June 2017.Reactions: Theresa May condemned the bombing, and in a later statement following the 2017 London Bridge attack, she said these attacks, along with the 2017 Westminster attack, were "bound together by the single evil ideology of Islamist extremism" and said this extremism was "a perversion of Islam". Queen Elizabeth II expressed her sympathy to the families of the victims. Campaigning for the upcoming general election was suspended by all political parties for two days after the attack. The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, called the attack "evil" and announced a vigil in Albert Square the following evening, which thousands attended. The Muslim Council of Britain also condemned the attack. On 25 May 2017, a national minute's silence was observed to remember the victims. Police reported a 500% increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes in the Greater Manchester area in the month following the attack. The Commission for Countering Extremism was created in the aftermath of the bombing.Condolences were expressed by the leaders and governments of dozens of countries, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, Pope Francis, and secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Yousef Al-Othaimeen. She said the One Love Manchester concert was "amazing", adding: "It was emotional at the same time. "When she sang One Last Time, I cried then. Everyone in the crowd could easily bellow the simple chorus, and Robbie bellowed it in between songs too. It even overshadowed his classic Angels as his main sing-a-long moment."Don't look back in anger, I heard you say/At least not today" - Oasis, Don't Look Back In Anger Another song that has taken on new significance for Mancunians in the past two weeks is Oasis's Don't Look Back In Anger. Here, it fell to Coldplay to perform it, with a little help from Ariana. Few bands can get a crowd going like Coldplay, and it was the first of four songs the band played."Maybe you're the same as me/We see things they'll never see/You and I are gonna live forever." - Oasis, Live Forever Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher was a surprise addition to the line-up, pleasing many of the Mancunian music fans and representing a different side of the musical spectrum to most of the other acts."So one last time/I need to be the one who takes you home/One more time/I promise after that, I'll let you go." - Ariana Grande, One Last Time Of all of Ariana's songs, this is the one that fans have turned to since the attack. It was the penultimate song here, which she sang with the rest of the line-up stood behind her.On the verge of tears, she then went into an incredibly poignant version of Over the Rainbow to close the show. Her performance throughout the night carried dignified emotion, and she showed grit and willpower by staging this show less than two weeks after those tragic events.Source: Wikipedia, CBS, BBC News

What advice do you have for Girl Scout leaders?

What advice do you have for Girl Scout leaders?Having been a leader for many years, especially overseas, I have LOTS of advice and tips that could help out leaders. I can’t put it all into just one Quora post, but I’ll try to put some of the best things I can think of today - my top 10 list.1 - If possible, lead the Girl Scout troop with a friend. If you have one friend who is working with you to lead the troop, then all of the other help you get is really a bonus. And, it’s good to be able to have someone to call to talk to about what you’re doing with the troop, bounce ideas off, help with problems, etc. Hopefully, you’ve gotten to know some of the parents of your daughter’s friends and maybe one of them will be the one who can be the second leader. If you’ll take the lead, a lot of times you can get a second person to help out. It’s rare to find someone who immediately wants to take the lead, especially with something new, so if you take the lead, then you’ll be more likely to be able to get help.2 - Take whatever “live” trainings you can from your council. Online trainings that GSUSA now offers are good for learning the basic factual information, rules, learning about the resources available to you, etc. But, they don’t help you learn how to interact with people nor how to really run your troop on a week to week basis. You need to learn tips to dealing with girls, their parents, and other leaders. Learning how to work with all of those people is key. And, you need to know how to do all of the things to hold successful meetings, which is best learned by talking with people who have done this.3 - Welcome parents to help out with the troop, but don’t “require” that they help out. Some people object to “requirements” and there are always those people who insist they are too busy to help out. Girl Scouts is really for the girls, anyway. If you make it fun for the girls, “they will come” - and that refers to both the girls and their parents. If you are doing fun things with your troop and the girls go home and tell their parents about it, pretty soon the parents want to come and see what is going on that is so fun. Also, some parents are really a bit scared to work with the girls. When they do come to see what the troop is doing, give them fun, simple things to help with and gradually you’ll be able to have them help out with other things more.4 - If you have a “service unit” (which is a collection of leaders of all age level troops who gather together for support and to plan group events for their area), go to the monthly meetings for at least awhile. This is where you can network with other leaders. Make some friends, find out what other troops are doing, get your troop signed up to do a couple of fun activities that are planned by others. After you’ve gotten used to the service unit meetings, who the people are and what they do at their meetings, you can get someone else to go, if you’d prefer not to.5 - Use email only for sharing factual information, not for discussing issues, and certainly not for discussing people. Email is only words, so the tone of voice, body language, facial expressions, etc. are not there to convey your meaning. And emoticons don’t make up for it. Have parent meetings a couple of times each year to discuss issues and ask parents to come and talk to you after meetings (AFTER the meeting is important, don’t let them dominate your meeting time with the girls and you won’t have time to talk to them before the meeting) or at some other time. Don’t get drawn into email discussions. Call the parent (or assistant leader or service unit person) and set up a time to discuss things more in person.6 - Make sure your troop gets to do lots of “active” things, go on field trips, sing songs, do outdoor activities, and limit the crafts. Remember that if they choose to do something you don’t know anything about, you can find help. If they want to go learn how their city park is taken care of, call the city and find out what options you have for the girls to learn about this. Maybe you can visit the park when gardeners are working there and learn about what they do. Maybe you can go to the office of the department of recreation and find out what those people do. If they want to learn about cars, call car dealerships and mechanic shops for help. If they want to learn how to knit, find a senior citizen group and see if you can get a few people to come to a meeting or two and teach the girls. Many people will happily help out, particularly if it’s only a one time thing. And, the girls would rather learn from a variety of people, not just you. You need to be there and help out with the other regular meeting activities, but the “program” can be run by others. If you council or service unit has lists of people who will help do various things with troops, utilize that list!7 - Let the girls help choose what to do, but guide them towards activities you are willing to help them do, without squashing their dreams. If the girls want to do some things that you don’t really want to do or that you feel are too advanced for them (or for you!) be honest with the girls and guide them towards similar activities. Maybe the girls want to go on a week long backpacking trip in the Sierras and all you’ve never even gone on a campout as a troop. You might tell the girls that it’s a worthy goal, but that they need to work up to it. Start out with dayhikes, move on to daylong activities including campfires and cookouts, then a one night campout, a two night campout, etc. And, make sure your own daughter gets to do some of what she wants to do. If your daughter is happy with Girl Scouts, then you will be happy. Your daughter will be one of your chief helpers, so she should get some benefit from being the leaders’ daughter. Don’t make it obvious that you are sometimes doing what your daughter wants, especially to her (she might tell the others!), but outside of the meetings, do casually ask her how she feels about different activities and if you are having the girls draw pictures or fill out surveys to figure out what to do for the year, pay particular attention to your daughter’s pictures/surveys.8 - Try not to stress too much about keeping perfect schedules, having perfect meetings, planning absolutely everything in advance, etc. You do need to leave some openings in your schedule to do things your troop hasn’t yet thought of. You need to be able to do things at the last minute sometimes. And, with notice, it’s fine to get someone else to run a meeting or even cancel once in awhile. You do have a life outside of Girl Scouts. And, the girls need to learn to plan anyway, so involve them in planning meetings, calendars, events, field trips, etc. Just remember that you need to have them do age appropriate planning and that if you bog them down with too much planning, they won’t think it’s fun. If Girl Scouts isn’t fun, they won’t stay.9 - If having problems with meetings/girls/parents, ask for advice and get help right away from your service unit manager. If nothing else, she will be a great help with advice. Good service unit managers will help talk to the parents, come to parent meetings with you, let you observe meetings, etc. A great service unit manager will call up a problem parent and will take the blame for you - “Oh, I’m so sorry that you are having problems with Leader Lizzie. That’s all my fault. I’ve been so busy I haven’t been able to train her and help her out as I should, and I haven’t gotten her the additional adult help I should have. I’m so glad you brought this to my attention and are willing to help me with this problem.” And, if she’s really good “I’d love to train you to volunteer as an assistant so this doesn’t happen again!”10 - Have fun yourself! If you enjoy what you are doing, it will make the whole experience wonderful for you and your daughter. If you have fun and the girls have fun, more girls and adults will want to be part of your troop - they want to have fun, too! I know I’m doing a good job when all of the girls show up at almost all meetings and I have 4 or 5 parents there to help out each time! It really is infectious. But, you have to be very positive and put in the work to have the fun first. Then, the other girls and other adults will come to have fun, too.
