Why did Vladimir Putin work for the Stasi?

Pretty little is known about the nature of Putin’s work during his stay in Berlin in the 1980s. Western agencies have been as reticent in disclosing details about him as the Russian ones. There have been voices in Russian media that say that it’s quite likely that Putin really worked in counter-intelligence. Two indications:The position as a manager of the Soviet-German culture center in Berlin is too exposed for someone in charge of an effective field work, and too low-level for a station chief. Something more suitable for back-office functions. Not long ago, when speaking to a larger audience about what kind of a despicable human scum was the former GRU officer Scripal, Putin suddenly got agitated and used of him the word shpión (“spy”). In Russian, this is a very negative word, and our spies prefer not to use it about each other (I’m not privy to their corporate mores, so I can’t either prove or disprove it). Allegedly, the operatives tasked with busting foreign spies are much more likely to do that.As to the ID reported found in Germany, the document most probably was issued by the Germans on a need-to basis in order to give Putin protection in some field work. In case of a situation where the local police is involved, it would be pertinent to insulate our intelligence/counterintelligence operatives from being caught in a precinct paper trail. In Stalinist states, whenever the police detained someone who produced an ID of a secret operative, they were obliged to check his credentials with the secret police before they started the standard documentation procedures. Which is why the ID was likely to be issued ahead of some larger operation where both DDR and Soviet operatives had to play a role.

What are the potential uses of Google Glass in the laboratory?

That's a great question. Here are some uses I could imagine in my field...1. When using a 96-well plate, the layout is displayed for you on the lens. If your assay requires transferring x amount of reagent from well A to well B, that's also indicated for you2. If running multiple assays at once, the remaining time for each operation is displayed ie thermocycler 0:45 hr, autoclave 2:15hr, centrifuge 0:15hr etc3. Voice activated timer. Let's say you're transforming, you want a timer for heat shock without having to stop what you're doing to retrieve one. You need exact precision and those extra couple of seconds to activate a hand held timer could have an impact.4. Display protocols or standard operating procedure. This would be amazing5. Store and retrieve samples. Let's say your assay requires you to retrieve a certain 96-well plate or transformation plate or reagent. The glasses could direct you to the item's exact location ie shelf #3, bin #7 or freezer #7, shelf #4, stack #26. Recording your work. This would be important in research labs to allow for narrated and self recorded "lab journals." You can be certain that you'll never have difficulty repeating your experiment and can always go back to your recording and identify potential sources of error or ways to streamline your work7. Troubleshooting guide. Let's say your autoclave stops functioning. Calling a help desk thousands of miles away and waiting for a technician to come on site takes forever. Imagine video chatting with the help desk and repairing the autoclave yourself as you listen to instructions from the technical operator and allow them to see your work in real time.I could go on forever. Would love to see Google glass in the lab someday soon!

What are the advantages of core jobs which would dominate over non-core in the long term with respect to IIT grads?

There are advantages as well as disadvantages of working in a core sector. Since this question is only asking about the advantages, I will only focus on the greener side of the core jobs.To make my point more stronger, first I would like to demystify six myths regarding core jobs.Among various factors for selecting a job, one of the major factor is the remuneration. It is true that the initial compensation of only few core companies is at par with non core sectors. But the initial package most of them offers is just the entry level package to an engineering graduate. Just after joining core industry, you need to go through training for at least 6 months or a year. It takes 2-3 years just to understand the process. As you add value to yourself, the remuneration increases. Traditionally, core companies are focused on long term orientations such as provident fund, superannuation, company provided accommodation, leave travel allowances, free medical facility for self and family, holiday packages, etc. If you add their cost along with the cash-in hand, probably the overall remuneration would be more than most of the non core sector jobs.It is often believed that core sector job requires only technical skills, but that is not true. You require soft skills as much as a person working in non core sector requires. For example, you require a good communication skill to present your ideas to your team members and listen to their views. You need to be a team player to be able to delegate the jobs and take on responsibility. You need an ability to take a logical and analytic approach to solving problems and resolving issues. You need to motivate teams and other colleagues, set deadlines and targets, and lead by example. Most importantly, you need to have the ability to keep calm during crisis and work under pressure. This is another myth. Core sector jobs indeed require you to go on shop floor or site but that is not the only job. It is just a small part of your job. You need to do planning and scheduling of various planned and unplanned work, designing standard operating procedures for creating a safe work environment, making annual business plan of your unit to present to management and board. Moreover, you do process improvements by using various tools and techniques such as TQM, TPM, TOC, 6 Sigma, 7 QC tools, FMEA, RCFA, etc.It is a myth that core jobs are dead end jobs and there is no way to become successful. There are many persons who started their career in the core field and did quite well. Mr B. Muthuraman, B.Tech in Metallurgy from IIT Madras, retired as the vice chairman of Tata steel. He was the Managing Director of Tata Steel from July, 2001 till September, 2009. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012. He started his career in blast furnace and worked there for 10 years.Mr H M Nerulkar, B.Tech in Metallurgy from university of Pune, started his career in steel melting shop. He served has a Managing Director of Tata Steel from 2009 to 2013.It is commonly believed that there is a saturation in the innovation in core sector. But that is not true. Innovation is a continuous process. Innovation doesn't limit just to develop new products. It also includes solving industrial problem, easing the operating procedure, eliminating the manual work to automated system.Outdated and often wrong perceptions of manufacturing have impacted women’s desires to join the ranks of manufacturers. The advancement in technology and automation has improved the working condition significantly. There is probably no such job in a core sector which only a man can do and a woman can’t. So, saying that women cant work in core sector doesn't hold true. Why IIT graduate should prefer core jobs over non-core?1.What we study in the academics has direct application in the industry. Though, it is not that you will directly apply the learning but the basics are covered in the institute. So, joining a core sector will be in continuation with what you have studied here. Do not presume that your 4 years in engineering will not be of any help later.2.As an engineer in core sector, one needs to work with unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers as well as with the senior management. At times, you give presentation to VPs and just another time you need to give instructions to the workers with different skill set. Moreover, you also work with people of different nationalities on various occasions.3.There are various initiatives and policies of government to grow the manufacturing sector. The National Manufacturing Policy to raise the share of Manufacturing sector in national GDP from 16% to 25 % and to create 100 million additional jobs by 2022. The initiatives such as “Make in India” will attract more investment to make India a Global Manufacturing Hub. India’s National Steel Policy to reach the production level of Steel from present 80 MTPA to 300 MTPA by 2025.4.Apart from indirect welfare through CSR activities, core sector creates much more jobs. It brings the livelihood to greater proportion of society and has a greater impact on the society.
