PDF Editor FAQ

I recently moved into an apartment that's about 100 years old. Realistically how concerned should I be about exposure to lead?

You should not be concerned about this at all. Lead paint has not been manufactured since 1978, which means any lead paint would likely have been covered by a latex or oil based paint long ago.Even so, there is no "passive exposure" because lead paint cannot become friable (airborne) as can other harmful substances such as asbestos. Lead paint must be ingested to be harmful to humans, which occurs when small children chew or eat paint chips containing lead (the reason lead paint was banned).Unfortunately, local and federal laws today require landlords to make written disclosures concerning the health hazards of lead paint, and the potential for the presence of lead paint in their rental units, which can be somewhat frightening to a tenant when presented with a lease containing a foreboding "Lead Paint Rider." Nothing to worry about; standard operating procedure.

How do I dispose of HIV infected blood?

In microbiology lab where lot of pathogenic microorganisms are being handled usual disposal practise I was used to and was asked to use is AUTOCLAVE ALL. MICROBIAL WASTE before it is kept along with HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES which MUST BE DISCARDED. I was give to unspdertand that all microbial hazardous substances after autoclave ( steam sterilised to kill all living organisms ) it is incinerated to ashes as it always would have enough nutrients for other air , soil, water hence no more digging a grave but burning, just like HINDUS BURN DEAD BODIES. but in a CLOSE chamber called incenarator.Hopfully all microbiology labs always have a standard operating procedure to handle waste disposals.

What do firefighters do if their breathing air pack runs out of air?

Firstly, it is not oxygen we use in our SCBA tanks, merely compressed air, as oxygen is an extremely hazardous substance to be carrying around in a fire, any leak turns the fire fighter into a large bonfire. In theory, training and according to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) of every fire department in the world, this should NEVER happen when operating in a toxic environment, but as any fire fighter will tell you...it happens all too often and all too often the answer is, "they die".SOPs will state that you should be exiting any dangerous environment (hot zone) BEFORE your low air alarm goes into alarm at 25% remaining, but most fire fighters still wait until the alarm goes off before they begin to think of exiting that environment. With exertion and temperature (among other things), that last 25% of your air supply may not be enough to safely exit the hot zone.In the 132 year history of my fire department, we have not lost a single fire fighter in the line of duty due to injury sustained at an incident, but we've come VERY close many times, a couple for myself in 28 years. We are also heavily stressing that it is no longer permissible to allow your SCBA to go into low air alarm while operating inside a hot zone, we are to be out by that time. A low air alarm in operation inside the hot zone is now considered a MAYDAY situation and our training is that the RIT (rapid intervention team) is immediately activated for a rescue operation. Sounds great and all safe and stuff, but you'll still hear alarms going off in the hot zone all the time, we're a damn stubborn bunch when it comes to completing a task such as a rescue or knockdown.
