When President Putin worked in the St. Petersburg Mayor’s office in the early to mid 90s, he attended some events organised by the Consulate General of India in St. Petersburg. One such event was a ‘Know India’ competition. President Putin (he was a busy man even then) would make it a point to go through all the entries. This he would do along with a senior diplomat from the Embassy of India in Moscow, who was the main coordinator for the competition. In the process, the diplomat and President Putin got to know each other.After the competition was over and the diplomat was back in Moscow, one day he called President Putin with a request. It turned out that the friend did visit St. Petersburg. However, he never informed the diplomat about it nor did he tell about the assistance provided by President Putin. The friend did not even call President Putin to thank him. On his part, President Putin had got everything organised for the visit and gone out of his way to take care of the friend and his wife, sometimes even showing them around himself despite his busy schedule. He did all this because a person he knew (the diplomat) had made a request to him.No doubt, President Putin has nearly 90% approval ratings - 17 years after first coming to power, a feat many world leaders can only dream of.Need I say more?
