In addition to the death of Bill Masterton of the Minnesota North Stars (outlined in other answers), there has been one other death due to something that happened in an NHL arena. It was not the death of an NHL team member, though.On March 16, 2002, 13-year-old Brittanie Cecil was hit in the left temple by a puck while she was watching a Columbus Blue Jackets home game at Nationwide Arena. It can, and unfortunately, it has.On March 16, 2002, the Columbus Blue Jackets were playing at home against the Calgary Flames. In the stands at one end of the rink was 13-year old Brittanie Cecil, a local middle schooler and hockey fan. Her father had gotten her the tickets as an early birthday present, which was coming up on March 20.About halfway through the second period, with the Blue Jackets up 1–0 and on the power play, Jackets forward Espen Knutsen let a slap shot go. As any good defenseman is taught to do, Flames defenseman Derek Morris got his stick into the shooting lane and deflected the puck out of play.The puck sailed up into the stands and struck Brittanie Cecil in the left temple. On the ice, play resumed with an immediate faceoff, as no one yet knew the severity of Cecil’s injury.Cecil has suffered a skull fracture, but the only outward sign of injury was a gash where the puck had struck her. Because she was bleeding, she went to a first aid station in the arena, where they called an ambulance so she could get checked for internal injuries.At the hospital, she suffered a seizure and was admitted. She underwent a routine CT scan, which failed to reveal that she also had also suffered a torn vertebral artery.The day after the incident she appeared to be on the mend. She was fully responsive and able to get up and move around. But on March 18, the clotting and swelling of her brain that had gone unnoticed caught up, and she lapsed into unconsciousness with a terrible fever.At 5:15 p.m., almost 48 hours after being hit by the puck, she died.Brittanie Cecil (1988–2002)In response to her death, the NHL and all North American hockey leagues implemented mandatory safety netting above the glass at both ends of every rink. To date, Brittanie Cecil remains the only person killed by an errant puck at an NHL game.
