PDF Editor FAQ
Why did Prince William reveal he is a secret helpline volunteer?
There has been a lot of criticism of Prince William for telling people that he had been a secret volunteer, with critics saying he should have kept quiet and not say anything. However, consider the total impact of the following scenarios:Prince William does volunteer work. No one other than the volunteer organisation know that he’s doing it - including the people he’s helping. As a result of his volunteering, he helps x people in need.Prince William does volunteer work. Whilst he’s doing the work no one other than the volunteer organisation know that he’s doing it - including the people he’s helping. After he’s done his volunteering, he talks about it in the press to encourage others to volunteer. As a result of his volunteering, he helps x people in need during his volunteering - and his publicisation of it inspires Y others to volunteer too. Z number of people chose to donate money to the charity, too.Why on earth would he *not* talk about it? That’s the only way to get maximum impact, and to best utilise his status for the greater good. If he had remained quiet, he would just have been another volunteer - instead, he became an ambassador for volunteering.
I have a question for people who are 70-80 years old! What does this stage of your life mean to you? What, if any, plans did you make for this stage of life?
I’m 73, going on 74. I did secretarial work for 12 years. I was a foreign service wife, homemaker, and I am a mother of one daughter. At 51, I started doing volunteer work for the benefit of children after a visit to an orphanage. I have volunteered at two orphanages, a street school, a children’s hospital, a preschool, and an elementary school.I was widowed at 62. My daughter lives out of state. I started volunteering at a preschool within weeks of my husband’s death. When I was 70, the preschool relocated and downsized, and I was out of work. In 2018 I started volunteering at an elementary school as a tutor. For eleven years I worked on charitable projects with seniors. In March 2020, due to the pandemic, both volunteer programs were discontinued. I am currently a Quora addict, and my daughter and I set records for continuous telephone conversations. On Thanksgiving we talked for 7 l/2 hours on the phone and on Zoom.Once I started volunteering, I felt that I would probably be volunteering after my husband retired, and that I would spend my time doing volunteer work and exercise, and with my husband.I didn’t count on widowhood, but my life has been full. The pandemic has kept me at home. I keep busy with exercise and Quora. Also, I wrote stories about the many children I have cared for through my volunteer work. I will seriously consider returning to volunteer work once the pandemic is over.
Does Jimmy Wales get money from Wikipedia?
I don’t get money from Wikipedia. I generally don’t accept expenses, even. There are rare exceptions, such as in some cases where the Foundation has asked me to take a special diplomatic trip to meet Chinese officials, etc. But for my routine daily work, I’m a volunteer.
