She kept detailed diaries about her life totaling 7,720 pages and 5 million words. These diaries included details about Lister’s lesbian affairs written in a code based on algebra and Ancient Greek that wasn’t deciphered until the 1930’s. An avid traveler, Lister died at age 49 after becoming sick with a fever while in the Caucasus. The BBC series Gentleman Jack (2019) is based off of Lister’s life.Oscar WildeOscar Wilde (October 16, 1854-November 30, 1900) was an Irish poet and playwright. Among his famous works are the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) and the play The Importance of Being Earnest (1895). Following two highly publicized trials, Wilde was was sentenced to two years hard labor for his sexual activity with other men and incarcerated from May 25, 1895 to May 18, 1897. His creation of code breaking techniques during World War II provided crucial intelligence that helped pave the way for victory. It has been estimated that Turing’s work may have shortened the war by up to two years and saved over 14 million lives. In 1952 Turing was prosecuted for “gross indecency” for homosexual activity and was chemically castrated. He died at age 42 from cyanide poisoning and his death was ruled a suicide, but may have been accidental. Rustin’s organizing work included the March on Washington Movement in 1941 to protest employment discrimination, the Freedom Rides against bus segregation, and the 1963 March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Early in his career Rustin was arrested for having sex with another man in a parked car, and in the 1980’s he became an advocate for gay causes until his death from a ruptured appendix at age 75.Christine JorgensenChristine Jorgensen (May 30, 1926-May 3, 1989) was a World War II veteran who in 1952 became the first American to be widely known for getting gender affirming surgery. Jorgensen used the platform she received as a result of the publicity over her surgery to advocate for transgender people. She also worked as an actress and singer. Jorgensen died from cancer a month before what would’ve been her 63rd birthday.James BaldwinJames Baldwin (August 2, 1924-December 1, 1987) was a gay writer and activist who’s novels, short stories and plays examined issues of race and sexuality in the mid 20th century. Disillusioned with racism in the United States, Baldwin spent most of his later life in France, where he died from stomach cancer at age 63. Baldwin was the inspiration for the 2016 documentary I am Not Your Negro, and his novel If Beale Street Could Talk was adapted into an Oscar nominated film in 2018.Barbara GittingsBarbara Gittings (July 31, 1932-February 18, 2007) was a lesbian activist for LGBT rights. She organized the New York chapter of the lesbian organization Daughters of Bilitis from 1958 to 1963, and edited their magazine from 1963 to 1966. Gittings also protested the ban on federal employment for gay people, worked with American Library Association to promote positive literature about homosexuality, and was part of the movement to get the American Psychiatric Association to drop the classification of homosexuality as a mental illness. She died at age 74 from breast cancer.Harvey MilkHarvey Milk (May 22, 1930-November 27, 1978) became the first openly gay elected official in California when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. As a city supervisor Milk sponsored a bill banning discrimination in public accommodations, housing, and employment based on sexual orientation. 11 months after being elected Milk was assassinated by Dan White, a disgruntled city supervisor, and died at age 48.Audre LourdeAudre Lorde (February 18, 1932-November 17, 1992) was a lesbian poet and who’s work dealt with themes of race, feminism, and sexuality in a way that has influenced intersectional feminism. Lorde died at age 58 after fighting breast cancer for over a decade, with later work of her’s focusing on illness.Marsha P. JohnsonMarsha P. Johnson (August 24, 1945-July 6, 1992) was a gay liberation activist and drag queen who was active during the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Johnson was also a founding member of the Gay Liberation Front and cofounded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, a group dedicated to helping homeless LGBT populations, with friend Sylvia Rivera. From 1987 to 1992, Johnson was an AIDS activist with ACT UP. Johnson died at age 46 from what was ruled a suicide but many people believe to have been a murder.Sylvia RiveraSylvia Rivera (July 2, 1951-February 19, 2002) was a drag queen and gay and transgender rights activist who cofounded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries with friend Marsha P. Johnson. She had a fluid gender identity and chose not to have gender affirming surgery, but did take hormones near the end of her life.
