PDF Editor FAQ
What's the best way to get your résumé noticed?
Hiring managers only take a few seconds to check out your resume. When I was a recruiter, I literally only needed three seconds to assess a resume. So the best way to get hiring managers to look at your resume involves leveraging keywords. Keywords help you speak the hiring manager’s language. For example, if you’re pursuing a job in human resources, but the job description refers to the role as “human capital management,” tweak your resume so that includes the keywords “human capital management.”Other things I was looking for on a candidate’s resume included direct experience and skills that reflected the job description; and clearly indicated education degrees. When I recruited Ph.D. candidates in economics, if anyone didn’t have that specific credential, they were immediately dismissed. Here are some other ways to get your resume noticed. In your summary at the top of your resume, highlight any unique skills you have, such as your ability to speak a second language. If you work for a competitor or used to work for a competitor, be sure to highlight that. Before you apply to jobs, take a few moments to review the job descriptions thoroughly. When you list your skills and experiences, make sure they appear in the same order as they do in the job description—the order tends to indicate their level of importance from the top to the bottom. The few minutes you spend fixing your resume will be well worth your time.
I was fired by Facebook as a software engineer in less than 2 months. Should I write this on my resume? Can I have another job?
In the past, Facebook had a boot camp for all new employees. You were expected to learn how to code and ship some sort of feature in that time. If you weren’t able to, no hard feelings but it was time for you to move on.Not making the grade for Facebook’s boot camp is very different from being fired for malfeasance or incompetence. It’s an absence of positive data in a fixed time frame. If I was an employer, I wouldn’t be sure what to do with that information. I’m not sure how many recruiters know about Facebook’s boot camp. Or, it’s possible you really were fired for other reasons. The best thing to do is probably to put an entry for Facebook on your resume with just the year (e.g. this year). Don’t say “to present” for the employment info. This does two things:It puts Facebook on your employment experience, which will probably be a screening keyword that gets your resume looked at.It leads to a discussion about why you’re leaving so quickly, where you can explain you got hired, but like x% of other newhires, didn’t make it through boot camp. Or, whatever else happened.Putting it a different way, you’ll probably wind up talking about that Facebook experience in screening regardless. You might as well get the benefit of showing the experience on your resume as a sort of pedigree to make you more likely to float to the top of recruiting stacks and get that person-to-person discussion.PS - several people have given me advice. This is an answer I wrote for someone else’s question. I expect they are earlier in their career than me.
What is the importance of mentioning our current address in our resume?
No. Never. Not because you will be discriminated against but because you could be (based upon the economic status of your neighborhood). Don’t risk it.First name & surnameGeographic region (Chicagoland, San Francisco Bay Area, New York / Newark)Phone numberEmail address†Your resume isn’t a legal document containing an exhaustive history of everything you have done. It’s an appetizer and highlights your relevant and best qualities that the company will value.† Ugh. And while we’re on this subject of email addresses. Listen kids, for fuck’s sake, create a new Outlook or Gmail or Ymail account strictly for professional communication that excludes nonsense like: “[email protected]” or “[email protected]” or “[email protected]” or “[email protected]” or “[email protected]” or “[email protected]”. NEVER include a year or a number that looks like a year because someone might use it to think they know your age. Don’t use fluffy words or political statements. find some version that reflects your name and maybe a number if needed (fake examples):[email protected]@[email protected]@[email protected]@[email protected][email protected] shouldn’t need to be said, but apparently I need to explain this to adults like every fucking week. Email addresses are free. Get one that is utterly neutral and looks kind of like the name on your resume.See: Dan Holliday's answer to What are the best tips for writing a resume?
