My high school GPA was about 2.3 on the 4 scale. I went to school every day, I also worked after school because I had no family and for some reason I was not put into a foster home. I had to tend for myself. Since public high school back in the late 50s and early 60s, in Minnesota, was college prep I was called down by my counselor and the counselor told me that I should consider trade school, that I was not college material. What was said to me spurred me on. I knew I was intelligent, I just to had to work and had little time for studies. I did get into college and at first I did poorly. But, I pursued a college education. I had a GPA of 2.7 (out of 4) for my first degree from the U of Minnesota. Then I took a teaching position in a small district in Michigan. I also enrolled in a grad program at Michigan State University. After a time, I was called to see the Dean of Students and I was told that although I had a 3.6 GPA (out 4) I had violated MSU admission rules and I was being kicked out of Michigan State. After that happened, I was accepted at the law school at the U of Michigan. I did well in law school. But, I never took the bar and was never licensed as an attorney. That was OK, because I wanted to practice administrative law which means dealing with the IRS, Social Security, Immigration, state tax agencies, and other administration law and agencies. So, my GPA did not did not get me a job, it was irrelevant. I started my own firm with little money but a lot of hard work. I had my firm for over 25 years.When I had my firm, I hired legal assistants who would be trained to handle cases before the IRS, Social Security and other agencies. I hired assistants for my legal assistants and support staff. I divided my firm into four sections, one would represent clients with agencies, one would be a publishing section, one would prepare tax returns, and one would form corporations or legal entities. It all worked. When I interviewed people for open positions, for the professional positions, I required a college degree in accounting, finance, English, and related subjects. For my clerical positions, I required at least some college study. For my staff forming corporations and other legal entities, I required a degree in business. For my publishing section, I required a degree in Graphic Design for at least one person. I did not have any problem filling positions. Some applicants worked out, some didn’t.When I interviewed applicants many tried to impress me with their GPA in college. Not where they went to college, or any work experience, or other activities. A GPA of 4.0 (out of 4) did not impress me. What applicants did in their life impressed me. I liked to look at travel by the applicant. I liked to see that they worked at anything for life experience. I looked at their life and how they handled their life. One applicant told me that she worked at three jobs and took a “full load” in college. I turned her down because, no one can work four jobs and go to college full time or even part time. That person will burn out. In short, I looked the applicants other activities not at their GPA. So, to me, it is what a person can do, rather then their GPA, determines their success. Some people having a GPA of 2.5 are good workers than those that have a GPA of 4.0. Having a GPA of 4.0 means that they studied all of the time or they are really intelligent, more intelligent than me. To answer the question succinctly, my low GPA in high school spurred me on to success at university. A GPA does not represent what a person can do, it is just a number.
