Chapter 1: Apex PredatorNot much different from other people I suspect. Boring as hell! Lots and lots of reading. Lots and lots of practice. Everywhere :) Mother fuckers are a resilient lot and do not die so easily, even after you have kept it out of water for a long time.In our kitchen, we killed the fish by raising it as far as you can and throwing it on the ground, as hard as you can. Took a few times of “hitting on the ground” to kill the bigger ones. We would than get out a mesh made of steel wires and put it over burning flames in the hearth. Sometimes a few of them would be still alive when we do this and they would flail their tails a bit in protest. But soon the tail ceases to move as the last vestige of life drains out of it.When they were done, the fishes would grow a little smaller, which was a little disappointing but very tasty and healthy. I was doing this before I fully understood the concept of Death. I am not sure how old I was but I will narrate an incident which will give you an idea. There used to be these ladies who came to sell aluminium utensils. They walked from house to house with huge bundles on their heads, which given the house density of our place back than is sayin’ something. They accepted old utensils as part of the payment.One fine day a couple of such ladies came visiting and mom wanted a vessel thay had. She traded in one of our sana-pun, this big pot with a narrow neck, used by our women to fetch water. Since they needed to pack it in their bundle, one of them went to a flat rock we kept by the side of the verandah an hit the pot on the rock. Her action reminded me of how we killed fish and I began to cry.I thought she will killing the sana-pun. Cried real hard and threw so bad a scene that mom had to pay the ladies in cash and they left the “carcass” of the pot. I gave it a burial. I had not yet made the distinction between animate and inanimate objects. Students of Psychology may be able to tell you at what age that happens in kids. I am guessing 2.5-3 in my case.We used to keep these ducks called belyti nganu. Again, resilient mother fuckers. We slit it's throat in the muslim way, you know, severe the jugular; animal goes to shock theory. Except ducks would refuse to flail around and die like chickens. They remain concious after you have sunk a knief upto the bones and cut more than half way around the neck. Forget concious, if you let the bird go, it runs away and walks and look around and tries to make noise. Except it's airway has been severed and it cannot.The duck would bleed out slowly and and take anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes to die. First it loses mobility. Than it cannot stand any more. Slowly it’s head falls as it's neck muscles lose the ability to resist gravity. You are never sure what is the precise moment when life finally leaves the poor creature. Have been seeing that since the time I began killing fish.Chapter 2:I wrote some place that it is harder to kill organism higher up the evolutionary tree. May be because I bond very easily with animals. Specially the younger ones. My maternal instincts are so strong that I was nursing injured ducklings back to health by 2nd or 3rd grade. I am not sure. May be 4th. But Mom taught me how. Right after college I helped raise a child, adopted by my aunt from the Anal tribe, as she couldn't conceive. This kid began to refuse to leave me for his mom and I began to wonder if this would make her feel bad and question her own mothering. I distanced myself from the whole family.I must have been 4 years old when I first saw a cow being killed. I am not sure if it was a cow, an ox or a bull. Quite sure that it was a grown, possibly old animal. Unlike the uncivilized people of India and the United States, we tribals do not like to kill and eat baby animals. Not these fake chicken they call broiler. The local ones that jumps around and kicks after you cut it's throat. In my dream, the calf that was taller then me, jumped and kicked like that. My aunt put me up above my grandma's almirah.During my sleep walking incidents, I never remember “waking” and leaving the bed. The first time too. When I came to my senses, I was sitting in my father's lap. Trembling. Sobbing. I was not afraid someone was going to slit my throat. It was what they did to the baby animal in my dream.Chapter 3: Team SportI am not a solitary killer. I hunt in a pack.There are a few concepts like “extinction” and “tolerance” in psychology. When you give a stimuli, the initial response will be high. But the organism adapts and you have to give more an more intense stimuli to produce the same reaction. Other subjects have differing names for this odd mathematical phenomenon in nature. In economics, it is observed as “decreasing marginal utility”. In investment, “decreasing rate of returns".The same happened to me. Often described as a secret order led by a mysterious “Old Man of the Mountain”, the Nizari Ismailis were an Islamic sect that formed in the late 11th century from a split within Ismailism – itself a branch of Shia Islam.The Nizaris posed a military threat to Sunni Seljuq authority within their territories by capturing and inhabiting many unconnected mountain fortresses throughout Persia, and later Syria, under the leadership of Hassan-i Sabbah. Sabbah is typically regarded as the founder of the Assassins, founding the so-called “Nizari Ismaili state” with Alamut Castleas its headquarters.
