PDF Editor FAQ

What’s the etiquette for feeding a babysitter? They're looking after your kids, so shouldn't you feed them?

When I was 15 I used to babysit these 2 super lovely Chinese kids every friday and saturday night. It was only ever for 4 hours, 8pm to midnight. The family owned the local fish and chip shop, that also sold Chinese food. Now I never got fed while babysitting, but the parents would pay me my time AND bring me chinese food to eat when I got home. Always asked me what I wanted when I went to the house. The were an awesome family.Another time my GP asked if I would babysit his kids on new years eve, and stay over night. My mum agreed and he would pay me £50 for it. I got told to eat and drink whatever I wanted, watch whatever I wanted on the tv, and the room they let me sleep in also had a tv. Easiest babysitting job ever! The kids were in bed before I got there at 9pm, I was told to check on them at 10, 11 and midnight which I did. They never woke up, I got to eat junk food all night, and got paid for doing it. I was actually happier about the junk food and tv than the money. At home I wasnt allowed food between meals, junk food was never allowed, and forget about watching anything other than my mums choice of program on the tv.

Why was my cat purring and cuddling up to me then bit me and made some squeakish meow when I wasnt hurting him and bit harder when I tried to get him off my arm and continued making this noise? I'm confused

This is a pretty common question regarding cats, by their humans… who somehow haven't researched or understand cat behavior. Your cat adores and has chosen you as his favorite buddy. He THINKS, as a CAT, that YOU, a big, human “cat” -- will “bond” equally and “play” with him in the same manner which he naturally does instinctually. He doesn't realize yet that he's actually causing you pain and some distress/ annoyance when he “love bites” you in “blind affection”.Of COURSE it confuses you, as, on HUMAN terms, the behavior is contradictory… human affection generally doesn't include “practice” predatory playing. When cats PLAY with each other -- they bite each other without drawing blood -- understanding that this is mutually FUN. It's NOT for the cat/ human bond in general -- and you can TEACH & communicate this to your feline buddy!I taught my super feminine, gentle kitty the word, “NO” from the start… with no need for any negative “punishments” ( which cats would never understand or respond to ). The word “NO” in a firm tone during moments when he inflicts pain, wants to climb onto your computer, chew on an electrical cord, etc. means his or her human disapproves or even fears for his/ her safety. My kitty KNOWS the word and it stops her dead in her tracks, LOL, and I've NEVER “spanked” or pushed her. Cats ARE super sensitive to human TONES…this might take a while depending upon each individual kitty. When you and your cat are together, and he's purring and snuggling close to you, he's experiencing pleasure… which can extend further to “play mode” cat bonding. At THIS point -- saying firmly, “NO” WILL begin to give out clear boundaries. Keep a small stuffed animal or small pillow -- to block and use as a “Surrogate” toy for his teeth. Also, purchase OTHER distracting toys, -- wand - types with string and a teeny fish or fake mouse on the end, which continues his focus on PLAY but distracts him from your limbs and hands. You MUST “know” that cats ARE considered “predatory” animals which hunt, yes? This instinct IS completely inherent in a cat's genes -- but it doesn't mean your cat wants to HURT his chosen beloved human. He's a small fraction of your size and weight -- KNOWS this, but TRUSTS YOU not to hurt HIM -- like a puppy that “plays” TOO HARD not realizing that he's getting too rough. In the scenario you described in your question, BOTH of you were confused -- you were in pain -- and HE wanted to be more affectionate -- and was frustrated that his affection was being rejected.Repetition in accepting his affection, but setting clear boundaries with the verbal NO, will teach him that biting/ clawing is off- limits. But he NEEDS to PLAY and exert his energies… it's healthier for him to do so -- but it doesn't have to hurt YOU. Use OTHER play tactics to encourage him to have fun -- chasing a toy, string, light, ping pong ball, etc. He WILL make mistakes, but he's your FOREVER friend… keep your cool…and establish human/ cat “play” -- pain free! Your cat clearly adores you! BIG COMPLIMENT!

If your cat has been an indoor cat, can you make them a part-time outside cat?

If your cat has been an indoor cat, can you make them a part-time outside cat?In about the early 90s a guy gave me a cat..she was very young, about 18 months old. The story was she had a sister , both living with that guy and his girlfriend. They split up and the gf took one cat and left him with the other. He wasnt mad keen really, so I ended up with her. A beautiful tricolour.. This isnt her but you get the idea..At the time I was living in a 3rd floor apartment..The situation just didnt lend itself to her going outside , plus the guy told me she was an indoor cat, so we lived that way for 2 years. Then on a whim I decided it would be a great idea to go live in Holland, a country I hadnt even visited up to that point. Sold up, packed up and headed off to Holland with a small van of personal effects mostly. We ended up moving into a squatted house in Den Hague, 72 Eland Strasse if memory serves me well. Just for a few weeks until we could get into the Blauwe Aanslag on the Buitenhom. Forgive my spelling of the streets etc, its been a while. The thing was she didnt get phased by any of this chaos, she wasnt fussed, there was never a problem. Before we left Scotland I sat her down and had a talk with her, about what we might encounter, how different it would be but that if she stuck close by everything would be fine and I would always be there for her and would never abandon her. She seemingly understood, cos no matter where we went.. and boy did we go places all around Den Hague, various squatted places, sometimes a few nights, sometimes a few weeks and even a few months ..when it came time to move and it was often a sudden thing, such is the nature of squatting, she was always there. Never had to look for her or search., Occasionally she would have to be locked in, cos we were on the higher floor and there was no access to outside.. it never seemed to bother her, always she took it in her stride. We lived in Holland this way for 2 years until another whim… Wouldnt it be a great idea to get a van and sort of… try to get to Australia? Of course it would,. A van was procured and we had another talk. different this time, since we wouldnt actually have a fixed base more a mobile base. again she just took to it like.. well, like a cat to a van. Spent some time down here in Spain before heading east, across Europe, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, briefly Bosnia, retrace the steps, Italy, boat to Greece, Turkey and always trying to head east. Never a moments trouble… Always let her out wherever I stopped for the night on the premise that I wasnt in any rush and if she spent a few nights out and about it didnt matter much to me.So, we had a wonderful adventure thru that part of Europe, spent 4 months in Turkey, partly due to the casual generosity of a Turkish border guard renewing an expired visa, before the Middle East beckoned. Again she just lapped it up. Syria, Jordan , Saudi Arabia to UAE. Few weeks spent there before getting a guy to lift the van onto a converted fishing boat for a trip to Pakistan. So she dealt with living on a boat for 10 days or so, never a problem. Pakistan wasnt so welcoming, at least officially… Always wanting bribe money for the simplest of things, anyway, it didnt affect her, she lived in the port at Karachi for 4 weeks while I spent the days arguing with a string of desk bound officials about the paperwork. Got it sorted in the end and off to India which was basically the same official bullshit as Pakistan… Everyone wanted the cash on the palm.. which I wasnt ever going to give. Had a tour of India but that was as far east as we could go. At the time and maybe still, if you entered India with a vehicle you had to leave by the same entry point… it wasnt permitted to enter from Pakistan and leave by some exit on the eastern side. The one lesson as regards the wonderful cat.. Lekker they named her in Holland, was that she was adaptable, she was flexible, she was fucken smart, she understood what I told her, in short, she was a legend. Cats can fit in any situation if its explained clearly to them and they trust you.We ended up back in Spain , living on a campsite on the South East coast, she passed away around age 20 having lived what I can only assume was an amazing life for a cat.One day I will be meeting her again and if she if she is willing we continue the adventure, only this time in the universe. I know she is waiting.
