Most high schools track students into certain levels of classes based upon student ability. Plus, by high school, almost all students have gone through puberty which, besides giving you an adult body, also gives you an adult mind. Basically, high school kids are (usually) mature enough to control themselves a little better than middle-school kids.So your typical middle school class, which is not ability-tracked, has kids of all different ability and maturity levels in it. This can be very frustrating for the advanced students in particular, as they often have to slow down and wait for their classmates to either quit goofing off like children, or understand a concept that the advanced kids understood as soon as they read it.

Does this look intimidating to you?If you follow the regular American mathematics curriculum, you learn AP Calculus AB in college.If you’re a bit ahead of the normal curriculum, you learn it in high school.Now… in Silicon Valley, the academic competitiveness is off the charts.Calculus AB? Many of the students in Silicon Valley learn it in middle school.You read that right. Middle school.The thing most people learn in college? The boys and girls here learn it in middle school. Imagine 11 ~ 13 year old still with traces of baby faces, learning the renown math systems discovered by mathematicians such as Isaac Newton.And the shocking thing is, their schools don’t even provide math courses that advanced and ahead of normal curriculum. The fastest math track possible for 7th grade is geometry or sometimes algebra II.But this doesn’t stop students at all. I’ve seen students push that limit even further by studying even higher math courses at home. With tutors or at academies.So bottom line:Students these days are pretty smart… They usually know what they’re talking about.The “I’m an adult and you’re a kid, so I’m smart and you’re dumb” argument is gradually becoming more and more invalid.
