Operation Neptune SpearStill from Kathryn Bigelow’s “Zero Dark Thirty” of Navy SEAL Team 6 or DEVGRU operators breaching the side of the Osama’s Abbottabad CompoundOperation Neptune Spear will go down in special operations history as one of the most audacious and daring operations ever attempted. The operation itself called for the kill or capture of the world’s most wanted man at that time, Osama Mohammed Awad Laden, mastermind of the September 11 attacks, USS Cole bombing, 1998 United States embassy bombings, and countless other attacks and head of Al-Qaeda, “the Base”. The US had steadily been gathering intelligence on the Abbottabad Compound (AC1) since November of 2010 and round the clock CIA assets watched the compound for any signs of life and any attempts of retreat. This plan was one of the most complex in US Special Operations history, rivaling the planning of the unmitigated disaster of Operation Eagle Claw and sought to avoid the same calamity.Originally, President Obama was presented with three options with regard to AC1; a high-altitude precision bombing conducted by B-2 stealth bombers, a direct strike by multiple cruise missiles, or a tactical assault raid conducted by special operations. Eventually he would choose the assault raid and tasked (then) Vice-Admiral William H. McRaven, Commander of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) with planning the raid.The complications for McRaven’s planned raid were already numerous before his option was considered and grew even more with ongoing planning:AC1 was located in Abbottabad, a city deep in the interior of Pakistan. It was close to a Pakistani military base and with a mile of the prestigious Pakistan Military Academy. Pakistan had always tolerated, not encouraged, US actions in the rural areas of Pakistan where tribesmen proved to be a nuisance. For the US to operate within Pakistani urban territory, right under the protection of the Pakistani military was both diplomatically and militarily dangerous.Pakistan itself was an American ally in the region, a sovereign nation with a strong military and nuclear capabilities. Any operation within Pakistan would almost certainly be met with opposition or at least an insistence for Pakistan to run the operation. This could not be allowed as there were a number of jihadi sympathizers within the Pakistani military and to advise them of the operation at all could threaten the whole thing.The risk of collateral damage from either the B-2 strike or the cruise missiles could not be ignored, there was substantial risk. For the US to strike an urban area of Pakistan, well within its borders, would be politically disastrous and strain US-Pakistani relations for decades to come. He organized an assault force comprising of 22 SEALs, 1 interpreter who spoke Pakistani and Arabic, an assault dog named “Cairo”, and 2 snipers. These teams would be shuttled to their destination by the way of two MH-X stealth helicopters, callsigns “Prince 51” and “Prince 52.” These helicopters would be piloted by the best pilots the US Military had to offer, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.A Contingency Force (CF) was also created in case of the operation going south consisting of another 20 SEALs, 2 Medical Teams, an untold number of CIA operatives and wet teams on the ground with Pakistani PMCs as well as several supporting units in such forms as drones and EC-3s.Rendering of the modified UH-60 Blackhawk used in Neptune Spear (How can a helicopter be optimized for silent extraction?)The assault commenced at 2315 hours local time with the two MH-X’s carrying the teams launching from Jalalabad Air Base and crossing into Pakistan at 2330 hours. After a 1 hour and 45 minutes, at 0102, the SEALs descended into AC1 and began their assault. One MH-X was lost during the insertion by way of a “vortex ring state” caused by the compound's high walls.By 0109, Osama Bin Laden lay dead on the top floor of his compound, shot just below the left eye with three bullets by breaching SEALs. The SEALs proceded to identify the body and deliver it to the second MH-X while other members of the team commenced SSE (sensitive site exploitation) on the treasure trove of intelligence they found in the compound. By 0138, the SEALs had departed the compound and were making their way back to Bagram Air Base for debriefing.Operation Neptune Spear overcame many hurdles that challenged the success of the mission to kill the most wanted man in the world. Through exhaustive efforts in the intelligence and special operations community, they had hunted down the man that had managed to escape them for 10 years. Neptune Spear had all the facets needed to be another Eagle Claw, ironically what created the DEVGRU, but it overcame its obstacles and delivered spectacularly.
