The carriers are designed to be very flexible, and can operate solely as helicopter carriers operating up to about 50–60 helicopters. They can also accommodate up to about 40 fighters when operating as a strike or air defence carrier. The RAF is to have its pilots operating the same aircraft type with the same weapons capabilities so it too, can operate aircraft from the carriers. This would give the British forces the option of deploying with a full fighter complement of 40 F-35Bs on each carrier if it was absolutely needed.In peacetime it is only planned to keep one carrier deployed with fighters, the other would be in maintenance, service work-up or deployed as a helicopter carrier only. It is also possible that they may deploy with six aircraft on board each carrier at times, half of the operational squadron on each. The second Royal Navy squadron would be a land based and training unit and the two would swap periodically to maintain competence in carrier operations.In addition the carriers will occasionally need a heavy duty overhaul and probably upgrades to radar etc. This takes at least six months, often longer. While their carrier is not operating the aircraft could operate from the other carrier but they could also operate from RAF bases. If the two services were using different variants of the F-35 this would be a much more complex operation with complex logistics and with maintenance crews needing separate training and parts supplies.
