PDF Editor FAQ

Why were old photos red tinted?

Assuming this was, at its start a color print, it is a matter of color dye stability with both age, and exposure to light. Photographic color prints are almost all approximation of the original subject, done by using three basic dye layers on a white background paper. There can be many moe layers of stuff included with this, but for the purposes of simplicity and usefulness we can consider three dye layers. These layers are for the ‘secondary colors, that compliment the primary colors. (This is photographic color theory presented, not ‘artistic.’) So, you have a yellow, magenta, and cyan layer, By some value of density in these three colors, we can fairly successfully reproduce any color and density that the eye sees and interprets as colors and shades, including black to white.Unfortunately dyes are not completely permeant. With both age and time, and certainly with contamination, these dyes will eventually fade. When they do so, they do not do it in a equivalent manner. With most photo prints the cyan, or yellow fades more readily, Then the other. The magenta color is less likely to fade as fast. So the reminding preponderance of color is often magenta. With this whatever levels of yellow and cyan, will then show a skewed color balance. Almost always a warm shit in color, as the cyan has faded. This does simplify things a bit. But it covers the essentials of what happens on the average, with faded color photographs. If the photo is a true black and white photo, there are other possibilities. As these photos prints have oxidised silver forming the darker parts of the image, the print does not usaly have any dyes. The silver image is sometimes ‘toned’ with chemicals to change the appearance of the black. This is usually a warmer color, but can be almost any color. These colors are more stable than any of the color dyes. It usually takes either a incomplete processing of the print, or a contamination via atmosphere, to alter these tones significantly. So this is the why that most photo prints may end up being off color, with age. Please note that most color printers used today, with home computers, also use dye images, in this case the black is also a dye. These color prints will behave in a similar fashion, as the color photo prints, in fading. Also note that there are dye printers, and ‘laser’ printers for upper scale printing of color from computers. They are not permeant, but offer longer color image stability than any dye based print solution. Historicaly there have been many other very diferent color print meathods that used differing technology. However none of them were very common, and unlikely to ever have been used with people’s snapshots.

What shocked you today?

I was checking my email as usual when I saw an e-mail from google. Here is the screenshot of the same.So what does this basically mean? It simply means Google Photos won’t remain free anymore. In a world where everything is moving towards HD and camera resolutions are getting higher day by day, no one is going to choose lower definition pictures and Google knows it. Till now Google provided two options:Original Quality which counted towards your space quota of 15 GB which after exhaustion could be extended by purchasing more.High Quality which compressed pictures and made them good enough for most people and was completely free. Now I don’t have any issues with a company that is asking it’s customers to pay for a service that it provides. The core issue here is the massive trust violation Google has made with all it’s users. A few years ago when Photos was launched, we were promised unlimited storage in the best possible resolution. It was marketed as a one stop solution to save all your photos and access them from anywhere. And indeed it has made life easier for millions of people. Now after about 4 years of google photos if I am told that this service is going to be monetized, it puts me and several others in a jeopardy who blindly put their trust on google. Unlike the good old days, where people actually used to get their photos printed in albums, in today’s world digital photos are all we have. And because of storage malfunctions, device changes and other such problems most of us have lost some photos. Google photos seemed like a beacon of light which would truly keep our photos safe for all eternity. Perhaps, it is time that we learn that we can never be completely dependent on big corporations and always have a so called “Back up” especially when it comes to our data and privacy. It is the same story every time. Big firms capable of providing an expensive service for free do it for years on the promise that it will always be free, demolish their competition and make users so dependent that they are forced to pay.Definitely something to think about!
